was doomed to wait upon an old man whom she loved as a father and watch him falling into a mean dishonoured dotage and her part seemed to her more ignoble than that of the staff he leaned on think you that wormtongue had poison only for theoden s ears my lord if your sister s love for you and her will still bent to her duty had not restrained her lips you might have heard even such things as these escape them but who knows what she spoke to the darkness alone in the bitter watches of the night when all her life seemed shrinking and the walls of her bower closing in about her a hutch to trammel some wild thing in this sounds pretty empathetic and gender complex women who are trapped in hopeless situations are prohibited from most other displays of self determination shrinking their lives into something unlivable so true gandalf eomer is silent and thoughtful on all of this seeing his sister and her life in a new light literally he looked on his sister as if pondering anew all the days the world is lost to darkness forever anything and everything is possible she could be free her brother could honour her heroism and imbue her with the self determination that she was willing to die for instead faramir tells eowyn that she is beautiful that he loves her and this is her response the shadow has departed i will be a shield maiden no longer nor vie with the great riders nor take joy only in the songs of slaying i will be a healer and love all things that grow and are not barren no longer do i desire to be a queen i really don t know how to convey the anti feminism of this literary decision beyond just showing it eowyn who was trapped by duty who feared the cage that kept her from any deeds who resented being burned with the house who felt pride in her shield maiden prowess just as every male warrior in the story does who wanted the power of a queen is cured of all of it by being put under the control of a new man being put into a new house with new duties and no great deeds of hers are ever mentioned again and it is instantaneous apparently the shadow simply departs and she is finally able to do the only thing that women can ever be truly satisfied by marriage and babies there is actually a lot more i could say especially about faramir s final word on what eowyn s suicidality was caused by but i don t find it necessary for my argument that is eowyn did not need to heal from the completely reasonable agony of a life without autonomy she needed autonomy and the idea that her actual pains could be resolved by the things that caused her so much pain in the first place ie patriarchal control and a new house to keep is anti feminist i leave you all with a quote from jrr tolkien to his son michael about women much though modern conditions have story itself is to cede all rights to sauron s rule and accept his supreme dominion or make war to take an anti war stance within lotr is to be on the side of total enslavement by pure evil even warriors were also extremely vital to ensure frodo s success he needed the distraction of the battle at the black gate for a start but if gondor hadn t been warring with mordor for the past 60 years then the shire would probably be an orc slave camp by now it s about not glorifying war all the battles that occur within the story are dynamic heroic exciting and extremely plot relevant there is no horror that is not thrilling there are no fights that leave you only disgusted and all the good people win and take their enemies prisoner if they are allowed humanity and you never see any of the ubiquitous atrocities that war always entails the war of the ring is a good war and in fact so are the majority of wars that happen even in middle earth s history it s all either good righteous folk against the pure representation of evil or good righteous folk against the barbarians of elsewhere who either started it or deserved it or are too barbaric to even feel sympathy for the most neutral war i can think of is helm hammerhand s whole deal but once that was started the dunlendings got help from evil men so maybe they deserved it too in the end the nuance of war exists in lotr but only so long as one infers the realities of racial prejudice and the violence racial minorities are driven too in order to defend their own humanity it is not within the work itself of course at various points there is dialogue and action that at a glance has the flavour of being against war eowyn is an often mentioned example but i already covered that and like notably even eowyn s brief war career is extremely good and successful we re all glad she was there to do that and it was cool as hell she even gets a badass mic drop speech in the middle of it faramir is another with this second most pinterestified quote in the universe behind not all those who wander are lost being i do not love the bright sword for its sharpness nor the arrow for its swiftness nor the warrior for his glory i love only that which they defend this is something i also have already covered but in brief that quote is cut off that which they defend does not mean as is assumed the people of gondor and middle earth in general faramir continues that which they defend the city of the men of numenor and i would have her loved for her memory her ancientry her beauty and her present wisdom not feared save as men may fear the dignity of a man old and wise the majority of all people in middle earth that gondor s warriors are defending have nothing to do with numenor this is a nationalist statement and as much as faramir wishes for gondor to not be feared unless it s the good kind of feared whatever that means he also wishes for it to return to it s dominant past as a queen among queens and for the silver crown to return an idealised version of a past that was only possible due to conquests of the south lead by gondorian kings gondor was enriched explicitely by the ship kings who took war to umbar to the point where precious stones were pebbles in gondor for children to play with one cannot be anti war whilst idolising gondor s brutal colonialist past this is not even inference this is the history tolkien himself wrote and put into the appendices of his book and in that vein another aspect one could infer as anti war is the accusation and denigration of the rohirrim s warlike nature and their love of war this mostly coming again from faramir he laments that although proximity with the higher men of gondor has enhanced the lesser race rohirrim in arts and gentleness the men of gondor have in turn become more like them as they too now love war and can no longer claim the title of high do i have to point out that this is not an anti war statement but a racist and eugenicist statement using the language of scorning war to make it sound more palatable in fact do we even need to get past the accusation that any society loves war before deciding this rhetoric is rancid this is literally anti mongol style barbarian propaganda which lines up uncomfortably with the rohir s horse culture and semi nomadic life style it s racism all the way down you know who actually didn t want to go to war denethor faramir will not wake again battle is vain why should we wish to live longer why should we not go to death side by side which is in response to gandalf telling him that war is in fact required of him and no one seems to think of denethor as a prime anti war example nor lauds his resistance to violence over spending the last moments of his life with his dying son because he is a man unlike eowyn and him choosing anything over battle is frowned upon war is his expected duty as it is theoden s who goes to war also seeking a glorious death and is not criticised for it as it is grima s another who reneges upon that duty and yet is not lauded for that choice in fact there is no example of a character refusing to be violent and being considered morally correct for that decision within lotr where is this anti war message i ask now finally one might say that the theme of the world being most impactfully changed by the hands of it s little people is the anti war message rather than the world being shaped by massive forces and great kings warring against each other two hobbits who love each other very much in whatever way is most pleasing to you were the ones who made a difference and they didn t do it through violence except that even disregarding gollum s abuse and frodo s taking of the ring to curse him and sam s actually pretty violent nature all the hobbits return home and then immediately need to violently defend the shire once again this is necessary saruman is trying to enslave them into a work pit he has enlisted the typically racialised swarthy men and half orcs to destroy the shire the fighting is righteous and morally just and when grima stabs saruman on frodo s doorstep that is necessary as well violence ends the scouring of the shire and everyone is finally able to live happily or sail west if so required except that is for all the so called dark men whom served sauron aragorn and eomer quietly get to keep warring and subjugating the south after the happy ending of this apparently anti war book and one cannot imagine what happens to the dunlendings as aragorn consumes all of eriador into his theocratic empire a state action known for how bloodless and peaceful it is but all the hobbits get married and sam has a billion children and all the warring was clearly worth it i ll be honest you guys i cannot even
