august any advice congrats prepare to experience the epic highs and lows of high school football law school you are going to be assigned a lot of reading in every class every day you will very rarely if ever actually complete all the assigned reading before class the next day you will feel like you are drowning by the end of the third day of school that s actually normal lol the first essential skill you learning in law school is how to triage prioritize and compartmentalize things accordingly your 1l year is equal parts 1 learning the black letter law rule statements elements and 2 learning how to apply the law most people only focus on the first part probably because there s a straightforward way to measure whether you know x y z re adverse possession or iied or whatever but imo i think people really neglect underestimate the importance of learning how to apply the law which is what your exams will actually focus on i highly recommend reflecting on the philosophy of what you re doing always ask yourself why is the professor assigning this case to explain this legal concept what am i supposed to be taking away here imo it s incredibly important to train the pattern recognition part of your brain especially when you are reading case law train yourself to recognize what facts in a case are important to the judge s conclusion ruling recognizing the legally significant facts in a case will in turn help you learn what makes a fact legally significant which in turn will help you understand the elements of the law you re applying also not to scare you but if you have ever experienced anxiety depression or had any kind of mental health issue in the past even if you think it s resolved now you need to get a therapist now law school is incredibly stressful it will exacerbate any pre existing condition s you have and will make them worse and you need a realistic plan medication self care third spaces in place to protect yourself the first week of law school they are going to constantly warn you about the prevalence of alcoholism and sud in the legal profession this is because you are going to watch in real time as various classmates became dependent on juuls nicotine weed etc if they aren t already over the next three years you will need to carefully monitor your own relationship with substances and your strategies for coping with stress because this shit will follow you after graduation do not let law school destroy you anyway misc advice buy quimbee and use it as a study aid for your doctrinal classes however quimbee is ridiculously expensive so make 2 friends during orientation and create a shared account where you split the costs offering to share a quimbee account is also a great way to make friends during orientation the first week lol that being said do not overly rely on quimbee it will make you lazy and neglect your readings also everyone can tell when you re reading straight from the website when doing a cold call case recital the real advantage of quimbee is that it highlights the key facts in a case and creates a simplified rule statement imo i would do your classwork by skimming a case read the quimbee summary and then go back to your casebook and highlight annotate the key points so you can quote the important parts from the opinion verbatim i swear im not sponsored by quimbee lol there are other services you can buy btw but i used quimbee the most during law school law school is basically high school btw so prepare to experience cliques constant gossip and drama you are constantly trapped with the same people most of whom are type a personality and you are all competing for the same grades this means at least 60 of people are either fucking crazy or evil if someone already seems super popular by the end of the first month they will either turn out to be 1 insane or 2 fine maybe a bit centrist the easiest way to tell is by figuring out if they re love bombing people basically i promise there are actually normal law students and it is imperative that you find and befriend them for the love of god do not fuck more than two of your classmates within the same semester the coolest person in your year is going to be 45 years old and you will never be able to hang out with them lol go to office hours your tas are usually pretty cool people and your professors will likely be starved for positive social interactions if your school has clubs or lsas join them it s a great way to make friends early on and do things also try to do clubs and activities that are not associated with law school because you will need a break from school lol you should also have a come to jesus moment with yourself by the beginning of november march assuming your finals are in december april where you honestly assess your
