back screened porch in cots or trying to sleep in the treehouse summer was everything good to eat it was a thousand colors in a parched landscape but most of all summer was dill harper lee to kill a mockingbird our weekly challenge is offered by anne with the theme of summer daze summer brings on so many memories going way back to childhood even before cameras were invented well not that far but we see summer through different lenses as we grow out of childhood and then as an adult and then into old age but we are often taken back a few of those aging notches during our enjoyment of summer we might feel younger i think our childhood summer memories are the best and we spend our later summers trying to recapture some of that summer will end soon enough and childhood as well george r r martin a game of thrones fresh produce certainly garden fresh produce is a treat in summer your neighbors will ask how many zucchinis do you want how about tomatoes i was gifted a bunch of apricots this year it must be a bumper crop i like apricots but yikes i froze some the same with strawberries july is the beginning of the new mexico chile harvest hatch chiles from hatch nm are the most common ones in the stores but there are several heirloom varieties out in the country towns and the pueblos that are wonderful harvesting is followed by chile roasting the grocery stores and farm stands will often have a chile roaster going so you can fire roast them before you take them home whole neighborhoods are perfumed by the smell of roasting chiles for a few weeks some chiles are left to dry and you see new red chile ristras hanging from front porches or garden walls a glorious time in new mexico if you like chiles new mexico is the chile capital of the world it says so right on our cars license plates monsoon season new mexico gets about ten inches of rain a year and most of that rain falls during our monsoon season typically july and august but sometimes earlier or later we might see a rainstorm off in the distance but not get any rain while other days we might get drenched this is also the season for flash floods the virga clouds are a common occurrence and interesting to look at they look like jellyfish drifting across the sky they are rain clouds but the rain evaporates before it reaches the ground sometimes the sky will open and send down a wall of water that is too much of a good thing but it is usually very localized the lightning storms are impressive beach blanket bingo summer means happy times and good sunshine it means going to the beach going to disneyland having fun brian wilson summer trips to the beach are how many people enjoy the season i have never lived near the ocean so those were very special summer vacations it was like visiting a new planet everything was different my recollection of summer is mostly baseball and bbq dinners home made ice cream was great but so was the popsicle man in his musical truck those few trips to the beach were really special there are so many summertime beach boys songs that come to mind family picnics picnics were another summertime event we might have one about every month memorial day independence day and labor day extended family picnics or maybe reunions are a great time to catch up count noses see the new babies congratulate the new graduates or the new couples my family is so tiny i happily allowed myself to be adopted by my wife s huge family since my daughter is truly part of that family the crowd is probably close to a hundred people reunion fun with boats since i m not water person taking a boat out on big water is not an enjoyable experience but i could happily ride along if someone knew what they were doing i was out on a sailing ship a schooner once and was awarded the task of being the pilot i didn t wreck it so i guess it was a successful experience a fishing boat is more my speed i was just in chicago a few weeks ago and took the architectural riverboat ride i would recommend it if you have an interest in architecture seduced by sunsets what photographer can resist a beautiful sunset or sunrise or almost any sunset or sunrise i think i have dozens of summer beach trip sunsets that is on top of the desert sunsets that i have dawn on a crowded beach you see the crowd not the beach if you want to experience the beach find an empty beach mehmet murat ildan s the lazy river or not so lazy moving away from the beach i can happily remember lots of lazy float trips on various ozark rivers always peaceful and always great fun the one rafting trip on the colorado was very different it was a lot of work and two people one being my wife were washed overboard we rescued her fairly quickly but the other one was harder to catch and drag into the raft meramec river mo current river mo rio grande nm colorado river the rescue road trip gettysburg battlefield most of our summers involved a road trip somewhere i still do solo road trips these photos are from a visit to the civil war gettysburg battlefield july 1 3 1863 our summer visit was somewhat somber but much better than the participants in the 1863 battle summer relaxing summer is a season of opposites a time where you want to do nothing and do everything humans are equally likely to spend an entire day lying in the grass as to stay up all night dancing beneath the stars allison saft just relaxing on a beach or somewhere in the mountains is my favorite way to enjoy the summer and recharge for whatever lies ahead this has been a fun challenge if you you are interested christine and she asks us to touch on an adventure that we experienced we think of adventures as some sort of unusual experience that is exciting or leaves a lasting impression of excitement or even danger at my age everything seems like an adventure but i do make a point of being out in the desert or mountains often enough that i might have a weekly adventure these days the adventures are captured in my photo images and i have shared several of those already i can fondly remember some years ago that i only have a few faded images from those early adventures were formative and left indelible marks on my future direction i m in a nostalgic mood and if you will indulge me this week i ll go back over 50 years to a 1975 backpacking trip in wyoming s bighorn mountains with my soon to be bride life is short we had the honeymoon first i m posting a slightly revised published poem of sorts about that trip and the adventure of it the old photos are faded like my memory and actually scanned from hard copies that were already old somewhere near the medicine wheel eventually one gets to the medicine wheel to fulfill one s life old mouse arikara it was somewhere near the medicine wheel that we knew our lives had changed a commitment had formed a bond unspoken that remained that way for months to come unsaid but forged strong for a lifetime silent we were afraid to spoil it in those days of wonder now those are hazy days in my memory as are many things as i look back it is faded some like the photographs it still seems that for a while we were younger than our years but we were on the edge of uncharted territory the bighorn mountains were almost empty then things were different those fifty one years ago the mountains belonged to us that summer miles and days passed with no intruders she was my morning sun and golden sunset i was her hero and pathfinder we laughed at ourselves who did we think we were i led her onward and upward with m ms i turned to help her cross a stream she stomped right through splashing water making rainbows we had a very close encounter with a mule deer i remember trout rising to a fly they were so small that we roasted them on sticks like hotdogs cloud peak rose above us but we were high enough i remember the mosquitos she would too if she were still here we camped on the crest of a hill over mirror lake the breeze kept them at bay i recall our night visitors polite not destructive another deer an elk or big horns large animals one or twenty we did not want to know lost twin lakes and the high cirques were not far above us on the trail there were horsemen heading up one day i wanted to go rambling the trail and the lakes but she was happy reading a book she was content just to hear my tale that was her quiet way the old medicine wheel arrayed on the hillside for centuries stands as a landmark in my memory we went back decades later to see the place again it was not the same all fences and parking lot it was confining not expansive we told our daughter the story but she could not see it we have those markers in our lives milestones those are signs and we are pilgrims there are places where paths diverge or come together depending on your perspective it was there that our paths joined at a different place and time but my memory holds it close how do we get through life are there traces showing us the way sometimes we get lost sometimes someone finds us we leave cairns for those who follow after us like medicine wheels they show we have come this way who we are and how we got this far medicine wheel
