to a brand new school this year this is the second year the since the school started last school year it s an american school but they will still be learning arabic every day all their teachers are even arab teachers so they will still be hearing a lot of arabic throughout the day as the teachers assist the arab students to understand if they don t quite understand the english karis starts preschool this year in k4 she was full of energy and willing to be a model for our before school photo shoot eliana is a big first grader this year we ve been trying to prepare her for more homework and a more difficult schedule then in kindergarten the first day is always busy with all the families trying to figure out where to go and the new systen of the year especially at a new school the parking lot was full of cars and kids and parents all trying to figure out where to go we found where eliana will be dropped off every day and kevin waited there with her as i took karis to the preschool wing her teacher miss jumana welcomed her and helped her find a seat and some toy animals to play with she was so happy to see these fun toys after a while of waiting outside for eliana s teacher to gather her students they led us up to her room and all the kids found a seat eliana already knew two other kids in her class from england who go to our church so she happily sat next to them as i took pictures when we picked them up at the end of the day they were both excited to tell us all about their first day and all the things they did we are so proud of our little munchkins and can t wait to see how much they learn and grow this school year here are some extra pictures to enjoy friday august 21 2015 karis and jacob s 4th birthday party karis and jacob are turning four wow how the time has gone today we had their joint birthday party 4th year in a row this year was a beach party theme complete with a few mermaids and pirates jacob and his family have been in the states during the summer and the girls missed them greatly so they were excited to have time to play together before schools begins on monday all the kids had a great time playing together and the adults talking together catching up on lost time elizabeth and i planned the entire party together on opposite sides of the world it started with a facebook private message conversation and then we began a pinterest board together pinning all the ideas we could find elizabeth suggested a pirate mermaid theme but as we kept pinning it kinda morphed into a beach theme which the birthday kids loved she brought a few items back from the states to help with the decor and it all turned out great i took on the challenge of making a sandcastle cake it didn t exactly turn out like the picture on the blog i found but i think it turned out really cute and the kids liked it the kids loved opening their presents karis was especially excited about her new ariel doll i love her face in this picture she got lots of nice things like a minnie mouse bracelet that sings some outside ball toss toys little red riding hood puppets a new doll and carrier clothes and a helium balloon she s been loving helium balloons recently they blew out their four candles together and everyone had a nice long visit we re glad to have our friends back and look forward to the next few months of service together wednesday august 5 2015 bedouin camp for two weeks i have been helping translate for a summer camp for bedouin children in a village this village is located out in the wilderness and was super hot and dusty but the children were so happy to come and play with us in the camp we taught them some english did crafts and played games each day we held them camp on the edge of the village in a community building where the men of the village have their meetings usually the children do not come while the men are meeting but they graciously welcomed us and the kids for this time some days i felt bad because we spread glitter all over the rugs on the ground but they never seemed to mind some days we tried to sing english songs with the children they would try to sing and do the motions while we were meeting some of the men of our group talked with the man who is the caretaker of the meeting tent it was a good opportunity for conversation and develop further relationships with the people of the village bedouin people are traditionally known as nomads they would travel around not having many possessions and never really calling any place home but in modern days with closed borders they are no longer able to live in this fashion but they still strive to keep their traditions alive by living in make shift buildings out away from the towns and cities most of the men do work in factories nearby while others are farmers of the animals which are shared by the villagers their arabic dialect is different than what is spoken in the cities during my first conversation with a family i had to tell them that i didn t know the bedouin dialect and they graciously spoke in simpler terms for me the children in the village are so adorable and have the most beautiful eyes i pray that as we continue to live and work in this land we will have opportunities to share his love with them more and more i pray that each child will come to know that they are precious in his sight i pray that they might come to know who he is truly i pray they will experience his compassion for them and their value in his eyes older posts home followers blog archive 2015 25 august 4 happy birthday karis first day of school
