20 2011 late last night after working most of the afternoon and evening on the second of a pair of socks i was hoping to finish i came to a slow series of realizations first i was going to run out of yarn they were top down socks i was finished with the first sock and i knew i would be out of yarn slightly before reaching the toe decreases on the second sock so close but so far there was no way i was going to make it what could i do other than frog the socks i wasn t willing to give up yet i thought maybe i could undo the cast on at the top of the leg of both socks frog back about a half an inch on each sock put the stitches on needles and bind off the top and use the extra yarn for the toe of the second sock i figured that could work but in the end i decided that was too much work to warrant trying why would that be too much work second because i didn t like how the socks were turning out anyway the first sock was a tad bit loose in one spot down near the heel on the foot on just one side of the sock it was a bit weird but the sock mostly fit fine and i figured it would still fit in a shoe no harm no foul but when i tried on the second sock to see if i could decrease for the toe with the yarn i had left i discovered the foot on the second sock was way too loose my gauge must have changed between knitting the foot of the first sock and knitting the foot of the second sock i was pretty certain this second sock would not fit in a shoe how do i rectify this situation i can go down a needle size or maybe knit a smaller size third either way it means frogging the socks this seemed like the only option left but i wasn t willing to make the decision to pull out hours and hours of knitting work that kept me occupied on several plane rides to and from the west coast last month hours at home or at knitting group on a whim i decided to sleep on it i woke up this morning ready to frog the socks so i realized this was the way to go fourth i don t like this pattern i don t want to slam the pattern here because it s a personal thing i have seen many beautiful fos using this pattern but in the end it just wasn t for me time to look for a new pattern to go with this yarn fifth as i was scouring ravelry to look for a new pattern for the yarn it hit me i don t like this yarn it s noro and although i like all of the colors in the yarn i didn t like their order and the size of the bands i couldn t picture myself wearing anything in these colors in the way it was going to turn out so now here s the big decision i have to make do i even bother frogging these socks to use the yarn for something else would i use it for a gift if i don t like the yarn for myself and can t immediately think of someone who would like it do i bother frogging skeining washing and drying all of this yarn just to have it sit in my stash forever right now i m on the verge of tossing it in the trash and letting bygones be bygones i have much nicer malabrigo sock all wound up and waiting to get used and i would much rather focus on that than on resurrecting yarn i don t like but what if some day i regret it and find the perfect pattern for the yarn perhaps instead i should tuck the nearly finished socks away and in a year s time if i still don t like the yarn i can pitch it posted in uncategorized 5 comments so close yet not close at all posted by andi on february 15 2011 i have been working on an afghan for one year and three months not continuously obviously but i cast on that long ago work on it until i can t take it any more and put it down for a few weeks or months or whatever i knit the entire body of the afghan and a decent amount of the border i just have to finish the border and sew it on i m almost done in the grand scheme of things but it s still a lot of work how much more work i won t know until i start sewing the border when i place it next to the afghan i try hard not to stretch it but until i sew it on i won t really know how much more i need to knit but it doesn t matter right now because there is no way i have enough yarn to finish the border after one year and three months i have to buy more yarn i bought as much yarn as the pattern called for i must have knit loosely or something whatever so tomorrow i have to go to craft stores until i find the right lion brand wool ease colorway and hope the dye lot is at least close wish me luck posted in uncategorized 1 comment failed hat trick posted by andi on february 3 2011 i finished three hats but unfortunately i failed at the hat trick i finished the third hat on february 1 then had to block it so i didn t finish in time but here is my late third hat project sylvana by ann kingstone yarn sirdar snuggly kisses dk in giddy 8 skein jaggerspun zephyr wool silk 2 18 in emerald 3 skein needles us 2 dpns us 4 12 circular and dpns us 5 16 circular and dpns date started january 16 2011 date finished february 1 2011 i don t know how obvious it is in the picture but the underhat is a lilac color and kind of stripey but i guess you can t really see the color well in the below pic either i think the lace looks really cool except for the one spot where i must have dropped a stitch or something toward the center it happened as i was decreasing and i knew i messed up but at the time i couldn t really see how it wasn t obvious until it was blocked and really had i been able to figure it out i might not have had the patience to fix it i was irritated because i didn t finish in time but still i really like it it s pretty warm and i like how it looks on me particularly the colors posted in uncategorized 2 comments as if i don t have enough to do posted by andi on february 1 2011 in late summer early fall 2009 i made a hat scarf and glove set for my brown wool winter coat in the end i wasn t happy with the set i love the hat and it s the only piece i wear regularly i didn t like how the scarf turned out it s not horrid but it s not what i want it s too narrow maybe i can try to block it wider but i don t know how much that will help the problem with the gloves is that i had to order the yarn separately and although i ordered the same colorway it looks very different plus the gloves aren t that warm while surfing ravelry the other day i saw a picture of the flocked mittens and was inspired light blue and brown is one of my favorite color combinations and i thought these would look great with the brown coat so now i m going to make a whole new hat scarf and mitten set with light blue as the main color and brown as the contrast color this time i will make sure that the yarn for all three projects is the same weight and the same dye lot bought at the same time the mittens call for worsted weight yarn so i started a search for hat and scarf patterns using worsted weight yarn in two colors because of the wonder that is ravelry it took me all of about 15 minutes to decide on the other patterns the scarf will be gerda s scarf from the holiday 2010 issues of interweave knits i m okay with the fact that the stitch pattern is different from the mittens i think that will make it more interesting to knit finally in contrast to the bold stitch patterns in the mittens and scarf i chose the yulie hat to keep it simple i have a ton of other projects i want to accomplish so i really shouldn t add three more including a double knit scarf that will take forever that need to be done by about november but i m going to add them anyway posted in uncategorized 1 comment create a free website or blog at wordpress com subscribe subscribed knitstant
