zones were first introduced they were supposed to be self enforcing and were equipped with speed humps and other obstructions to slow motorists down it was a bit counter productive because some drivers raced and braked from hump to hump increasing pollution but when lancashire introduced the more widespread 20 limits on residential roads they were not self enforcing and the 20 when lights flash outside many schools are not self enforcing and i think they are not even a legal limit i seem to remember when these 20 limits as opposed to zones were being introduced by councillor ashton it was said that the police would not enforce them frankly i think it is a disgrace that the police pick and choose which laws to enforce it was because the police wouldn t enforce parking restrictions that we got traffic wardens issuing parking tickets perhaps they should be able to issue speeding tickets if the police fail to enforce speed limits i did see somewhere that national highways traffic officers may get power to issue speeding tickets on motorways i think the problem is that the police enforce by public consent and they are reluctant to enforce unpopular laws they think that if they enforce speed limits strictly lots of motorists will be alienated and won t cooperate with information about other crimes perhaps traffic wardens should be replaced by a separate traffic enforcement force separate from the police it reflects very badly on the british people that so many people want to choose which laws they will obey and choose to ignore speed limits and other motoring laws with like to point out that i am a non driver and a keen cyclist and cringe at some of the antics of the cyclist on the a6 electric bikes going more than 15 5mph cyclists going through red traffic lights
