differences into account often becomes pointless and sometimes completely misleading another problem is that another type of heterogeneity which has to do with the specification of the functional relationships can appear suppose the independent school effect is connected to for example ethnicity and that pupils with a swedish background perform better than pupils with an immigrant background this does not necessarily mean that pupils with different ethnic backgrounds are in themselves affected differently by attending an independent school the effect could rather originate for instance from the fact that the alternative municipal schools that immigrant pupils could have attended were worse than those the swedish pupils could have attended if these differences in the basis for comparison are not taken into account the estimated independent school effects become misleading further heterogeneity problems arise if the mechanisms that are active in creating the independent school effect look significantly different for different groups of pupils independent schools with a focus on immigrant groups could for example be more aware of the need to support these pupils and take compensatory measures to counteract prejudices and the like in addition to the effects of the presumed better teaching in other respects at independent schools the effects for this category of pupils are also an effect of the mentioned heterogeneity and will consequently not coincide with that for the other group of pupils unfortunately the problems do not end here we are also confronted
