27 2011 balloon hacky sack i first must praise my camera that is an awesome picture i love my camera i am no photographer and look what my camera has produced i also love sunny days that help my camera okay so today we had our library craft day this fun hacky sack ball was one of the crafts we made age range this is great for children of all ages as long as you trust your child with balloons and small seed like things you can do this with your child at the activity children one and up were doing this materials balloons scissors funnel hard wheat or bird seed you could also use small plastic pellets activity choose three balloons cut the neck of the balloon off of two of the balloons right where it juts out from the round part of the balloon one of these will be your outer edge of the hacky sack so may sure your favorite color will be one of these stretch and blow up the third balloon then release the air this is just to stretch it out put the third balloon over the small end of the funnel fill the balloon with the seed wheat pellets we used hard wheat but if you don t own that already i would do one of the other options work it all in so it is out of the neck cut the end of the neck off but not the entire neck just the bulky end part fold the remaining neck so it is flat against the balloon put one of the two cut balloons over the balloon now full of seeds put the neck portion of the filled balloon into the second balloon first so that the openings are not next to each other repeat with the final balloon you can always use more balloons if you want to you now have a fun ball to play with i don t know about you but my kids love balls posted by valerie plowman at 1 00 am 0 comments email this blogthis share to x share to facebook share to pinterest labels balls child fine motor skills gross motor skills preschooler sensory summer toddler monday june 6 2011 paper pieces sun it is summer around here or at least getting there this is a fun activity for the sun that brayden did in kindergarten this year it is a sun made from different cut pieces of paper the pices are cut in various shapes trapezoids triangles rectangles diamonds etc that puts this activity covering fine motor skills color skills shapes and gluing skills supplies paper to glue yellow papers onto the blue paper in this picture yellow papers of various shades you might also do gold as shown here scissors pencil glue activity have your child draw a circle on the base paper this will be the circle the yellow pieces go into have your child cut out yellow pieces of paper if your child is too young to cut do this ahead of time and talk about the shapes as you glue have your child glue the pieces into the circle for to create the sun posted by valerie plowman at 1 00 am 0 by serra i ll be honest as summer approached and i was faced with my first child spending the summer off of school i panicked a bit as a child i worried about losing my edge over the summer and i was on year round school so i had 4 weeks off for summer so you bet i worry as a mom so i sat down at my computer armed with my research face my books and my notebook as i read journal articles studies and opinions it all came back to the extraordinarily simple task of reading read to your child that is the main and best thing you can do there are of course other things you can do to help out here is my plan for the summer read aloud every day we already do this and there is no way we could not do this unless we wanted a total mutiny so this will easily continue on as it has some experts suggest 20 minutes a day some 30 we tracked minutes for school this year and i found we were reading usually about 90 minutes a day total wow i had no idea sustained silent reading this is described in the read aloud handbook by jim trelease the basics of it is that you sit and read what you want in the same room as your child who is sitting and reading what he wants comics magazine whatever he wants so long as it is morally okay with you you then silently read to yourselves for 30 minutes we have done this off and on it gets hard during the school year but is so fabulous brayden loved it even before he could read so i know he will love it even more now that he can read to himself learning activity i plan to continue to have our daily learning activities over the course of the summer visit the library i plan to continue to visit the library at least every two weeks we will also be participating in our library s summer reading program play sports we will play sports in our backyard together a healthy body is part of having a healthy mind we will also do swimming lessons and we will attend sporting events watching a sport played helps you learn how it should be played go for walks and bike rides in reading magic by mem fox fox really stresses the importance of the child having a knowledge of the world to make reading meaningful a point trelease also stresses going for walks or bike rides gets your child acquainted with the area around you these are slow moving activities at least compared to a car ride so the child can really pay attention to things visit local museums the benefits of this is the same as i mentioned above this expands the child s knowledge of the world beyond his own neighborhood this takes him into entire different worlds family vacations we will do some family vacations and most of those will be camping again vacations expand the child s view and knowledge of the world do you know what we will do on our drive there a big thing will be listening to books on tape cd attend summer activities there are lots of local summer activities in a community there are parades fairs and town festivals again these expand the child s base knowledge free play we will also be sure to include plenty of free play with friends and family to allow for imagination growth structured play we will have structured playing time as well to help focus various skills piano brayden will continue to practice piano and will take piano lessons for part of the summer i think the two main themes here are very natural for parents to do on their own one is to read to children each day have exposure to books visit the library the second is to expand your child s knowledge of the world take advantage of the fun events of the summer go for walks and hikes remember a child s view of the world is so small you don t need to go to europe to expand the view going across town can do so posted by valerie plowman at 1 00 am 1 comments email this blogthis share to x been thinking about ways to prevent summer setback and yes i wrote a post on it last summer http learningdevelopmentactivities blogspot com 2010 08 preventing or minimizing summer setback html it has great ideas i am working on coming up with a specific plan so we don t slide into complacency and accepting the summer slide or so august 1 doesn t roll around and i think ack summer setback one of the most successful things you can do to prevent summer setback is reading we read a whole lot at our house even so i wanted to do something motivating for reading in the summer goals help people perform to their best ability so i thought a summer reading program would be fun our library has a free summer reading program available for people of all ages the goal is simple 20 minutes a day but prizes are awarded for most minutes read they also have some fun craft projects a magician and they have rented out the local pool for a swim party for those who complete the program lots of fun so check your local library and see if they provide some sort of reading program if not you can create your own with goals and a fun prize at the end maybe a trip for ice cream a fun outing or a new book painting can be really fun but it can also be a mess a deck or fence or sidewalk can be the perfect canvas for a little water painting i filled up a few bowls of water gave both girls multiple brushes roller sponge brushes large and small paintbrushes and let them have fun the deck dries quickly and leaves them with a fresh drawing surface about every minute or so again no clean up necessary plus a lot of kids like to lay down and paint color you may find that if your munchkin doesn t enjoy painting while sitting in a chair he she might like it when they get to lay down and even better for the ones that still like to taste everything no harm done if they manage to sneak in a little sip posted by raegan at 12 00 am 4 comments email this blogthis share to x share to facebook share to pinterest labels fine motor skills summer water play friday august 6 2010 pouring yourself a drink i ran across some of the cheapy plastic pitchers when i was out shopping one day so i picked up a few one activity most kids would love to try is pouring their own drink and after watching them try you can see that it s quite a challenge managing the sloshing liquid aiming where it should go and actually getting some in the glass not pouring so fast as to knock the glass over and not dropping the heavy pitcher it takes some practice to say the least to encourage my kiddos to practice this skill without any cleaning on my part and to help keep them hydrated on those oh so hot summer days i fill up yes completely otherwise you ll make multiple trips to fill up the pitcher a pitcher with ice water and bring out one plastic cup per kiddo i just set it out and told them to pour themselves a drink if they got thirsty my 3 year old said by myself i just smiled and nodded their faces lit up and they poured themselves drink after drink and drank it all well whatever managed to get in the cup posted by raegan at 12 00 am 2 comments email this blogthis share to x share to facebook share in while i filled up the pool they loved it when the bubbles start to disappear i just sprayed the water again with the hose and they reappeared easy and fun just for the record regular diapers are really absorbent i think i ll use a swim diaper next time though posted by raegan at 6 53 am 3 comments email this blogthis share to x share to facebook share to pinterest labels summer water play
