book review 81 of 2026 ruinous ends by i v marie rating 3 25 stars read from july 25th to 27th so apparently this review came out as one stream of consciousness instead of a well thought out and crafted review i apologize for that ahead of time i immediately borrowed this one from the library following its release earlier this month i had read the first book immortal consequences in january and was so excited to read the next one when it came out later this year i say all of that to say that i truly enjoyed the first book but ended up giving it a 3 75 star rating because of the ending it was actually sitting well higher than that in the middle when august was being unhinged and i was there for it and i think part of the reason i was excited for this one is that book one set up a lot of things so i felt like i had a lot to look forward to but then it just didn t pan out the way i expected or wanted everything gets wrapped up all nice and neat into a bow for all of our characters except for one and between that and the pairing off that happened it just left me wanting more there is one couple that i was so excited about still even though i just complained about people getting paired off the ending for august and wren is so exactly the kind of thing that makes my brain go feral that i couldn t help but love their ending i ll keep that vague enough to not spoil too much there the main things i disliked from this one besides it not living up to its potential are 1 how derivative it felt 2 the deus ex machina of it all and 3 the unaddressed plot holes i know that everything comes from something nothing is new etc but i could match up around five different ya books to things that happen in this one multiple scenes per ya book so it felt a little lacking there there is a big event that came out of nowhere that saves the day i can agree support enjoy where the author decided to take the novel but how we got there was so convenient there were quite a few plot holes in both books that took me out of the story they re mostly questions of how magic works or how something impacts the magic system so it doesn t really drag down the book too much for me it s just something i noticed and didn t love overall this was such a fun duology to read i almost wish i had read these back to back instead of separated by several months i think it would have helped my enjoyment some book review book reviews booklr bookblr bookstagram booksta books read in 2026 2026 reading challenge goodreads challenge goodreads new release i v marie ruinous ends the souls of mean you don t have to write descriptions but there s a word for that a script congrats you re not a novelist you re a very inefficient playwrite who writes plays that go on for several hours go pitch it to netflix 8 095 notes jul 28th 2026 open in app facebook tweet reddit mail embed permalink ghostingfee ghostingfee on chapter 20 of northanger abbey and is tilney just coming up with all this off the top of his head i would be like woah you re an insanely good oral storyteller dude the sensory details the imagery the pacing all this while driving a cart 142 notes jul 28th 2026 open in app debate which one of jane austen s heroines ended up in the most desirable position at the end of her respective novel but honestly catherine morland living with her incredibly kind and well read husband henry tilney and his dogs in a newly built substantial stone house surrounded by pretty meadows that sounds like a rather good deal to me 219 notes jul 27th 2026 open in app facebook tweet absolutely allowed to dislike a character but you should also pay attention to and understand why the poc character or woman is disproportionately targeted by fandom for often innocuous reasons 2 774 tweet reddit mail embed permalink eg515 creekfiend not to talk about the hp show but it s wild to me that jkr was like publicly and explicitly like the last set of child actors have denounced my bigotry i want a new set of child actors to groom create a television program so i can have new children and everyone was just like ok joanne here s your new children thewickedbohemian leaving aside the weird framing of using the term grooming now that we re past the point of no return enough that we ve got trailers out the new set have the opportunity to do the funniest thing ever and denounce her bigotry where she can t back out or just scrap everything thus forcing her to be around their views enough that they might deradicalize her creekfiend i mean she is explicitly upset that the last cast of kids broke away from her shit because she made them what they are and wants to like start fresh with a new batch of children so she is hoping the outcome here will be that these kids follow her ideology into adulthood bc of the outsized role she knows she is going to have in their lives that s grooming like that s a textbook case of grooming grooming doesn t have to be sexual sexual grooming is just one type of grooming using your power and influence to try to mold kids minds so that they agree with your ideology is also grooming reasonablywittyatbest yeah man that s grooming but you ll never see people agreeing because it would make people have to deeply reflect on the role of religion in society whetstonefires i once referred to the purpose of veggietales as indoctrination of children and despite the fact that the most literal and original definition of that word is train into christians with correct beliefs people got really offended this is a relatively recent phenomenon indoctrinate was broadly considered a morally neutral word up to like the 60s so i d argue we are seeing some kind of ongoing culture shift around conceptualizing the rights of children no way of knowing ofc where we re going to land dragon in a fez where we should land is that society begins to agree there is a difference between teaching children basic prosocial values that will help them function positively in to the world and manipulating them to adopt specific belief systems religious political etc on the basis of adults feeling entitled to the comfort of believing that their ideal society will persist beyond their own lifespans but that probably won t happen 32 392 notes jul 25th 2026 open in app facebook tweet reddit mail embed permalink next
