different reading levels perhaps they should so what s all this got to do with cancelling trains before i can explain i need to draw a distinction between goals and targets the two words are used often interchangeably but i d like to suggest that a goal is the reason behind what you re doing the desired result while the target is what you personally are aiming to achieve the target should be something over which you have a large amount of control to explain in terms of the trains the goal of the public transport system should be to move people from place to place in a timely and efficient manner to ensure this goal they may have a target of no more than x percent of trains being late as you may be aware metro solved the problem of not meeting their target by cancelling some trains this but at thirty dan mclaughlin quit his well paid job to become a professional golfer he d been to the driving range a few times but he d never played a complete round in his life this is a true story and true stories that are repeated tend to fall into two categories cautionary tales about thinking before you take a big risk or oprah like tales about how much better you ll be if you follow your passion however it s hard to put dan s story into either category dan decided to put into practice the 10 000 hours theory made famous by malcolm gladwell in outliers which suggests that you need that amount of practice to become an expert in anything using his savings he practised virtually full time for seven years to build up the hours and after a mere 5 000 hours he was a 2 6 handicap golfer in case you know nothing about golf that s quite an achievement there s quite an interesting recent article about his progress but i d like to go off on a tangent by the time our students reach year 12 most of them will have spent the required 10 000 hours practice in the classroom which theoretically is enough time for them all to be expert students while some of them are very good i doubt that many people would argue that their class is full of expert students while there are many different explanations and while many of you may have different theories about how we improve the education system i d like to use dan the golfer to make a very important point about nature of improvement deliberate practice is needed mere repetition is not enough what do we mean by deliberate practice well it means a person should be directing their energies on should focus on something that you are almost able to do but still need to work to achieve the task should be monitored and feedback given not only that in order to improve the person needs to be motivated of course if this sounds like a typical classroom to you then great but i suspect that some of you are thinking that it sounds a bit like that differentiation stuff and i don t have time to be preparing a different lesson for each of my students and i already spend most of my life correcting kids work so why are you wasting my time with all this because i know that you re all busy i won t go into a lot of detail now but there are two things to keep in mind first differentiation is not preparing a different lesson for everyone it s more about ensuring that every student has an entry point and some way to respond to the work as with deliberate practice students should be attempting something that they are almost able to achieve but will need to stretch a little in order to succeed the second point is that feedback doesn t have to only come from the teacher apart from peer feedback there is the opportunity to embed feedback in the work itself video games are excellent examples of how to achieve both trying to achieve something just a little bit harder and embedded feedback i m not suggesting that every class needs to contain an online game merely that the structure of video games moves who are capable up to the next level giving them a more difficult challenge and one always receives immediate feedback when one fails to achieve the goal is there any way to use similar structures in the work you set your students while it s true that sometimes it s necessary to repeat activities in order to become proficient simply throwing baskets at a ring won t improve your skills unless you take note of why you re missing deliberate practice means changing what you do in order to achieve a better 1 minute do you belong here ok in my first blog i mentioned how i hadn t bought the rest of a particular book so i was stuck on analogies now analogies can be useful but they have their drawbacks not only that i think you ll all agree that we need more than one string to our bow if we re going to teach effectively so i bought the book and it s time to move on to the b i m not intending to go through the book from a to z i mean just going through a book by starting at the beginning and going through chapter by chapter would just be boring wouldn t it i think that s why i dropped biology in year 11 well that and the fact that i scored zero on a test really although i had been sick for the topic and had just arrived back in class zero seemed pretty harsh anyway i did just read the b and fortunately it wasn t about biology at all it was all about belonging given that the start of the year brings lots of new year sevens as well as new staff it seems appropriate to talk about belonging some of you undoubtedly are thinking that belonging is one of those warm and fuzzy concepts that has nothing to do with literacy or learning but it s surprising how much a sense of belonging has to do with our academic success belonging isn t just about the isolated student the groups including stereotypes that we perceive ourself as being part of affect us quite dramatically a study where asian females were divided into two groups before completing a maths test revealed some interesting results one group was reminded of the fact that they were female before the test while the other group was asked to reflect on what it was like to be asian in a western country in spite of the groups being randomly assigned the groups that were reminded of the asian heritage outperformed those that were reminded of their gender this happened often enough for it to be statistically significant it may be taking things too far to suggest we hand students notes reminding them of whatever stereotype will help them perform best handing someone a note just before they do an assessment task saying for example you re male and males are good at maths probably won t have much effect after the first couple of times however there is a strong argument for reminding students of the fact that even if they re nervous or struggling that s just the way things are at school sometimes if you think you don t belong you re not alone there s a whole group of you feeling exactly the same way this is from the abcs of how we learn 26 scientifically proven approaches how they work and when to use them walton and cohen 2011 conducted a study with college freshmen in one of two conditions the freshmen did an activity to boost their sense of belonging by reading ostensible survey results from more senior college students the survey indicated that most senior students had worried about whether they belonged their first year of college but that they became more confident in their belonging as time went on the students read quotes from individual students and wrote a short essay about how their own experiences echoed the survey which they read in front of a video camera to help future students freshmen in the second condition served as a control and did a neutral version of the activity where the survey and essay topics were unrelated to social belonging the belonging booster was expected to especially help african american students who more often express higher levels of uncertainty about belonging in college and are at risk for the negative consequences of feeling that they do not belong figure b 1 shows the effect of the study as measured by the students grade point averages gpas generally went up from the start of college to the end even for the neutral group however focusing on the african american students reveals a telling story at the start of college the african americans in both conditions had lower gpas than their european american counterparts three years later the gpas of african american students who did the neutral activity still exhibited a large achievement gap in contrast the students who completed the belonging booster made significant gains cutting the achievement gap by 79 percent followup surveys indicated that the one hour intervention particularly helped the african american students to reframe their interpretation of the daily adversities of being in college rather than seeing adversity as symbolizing that they do not belong they reframed the setbacks as simply setbacks the intervention robbed adversity of its symbolic meaning for african americans untethering their sense of belonging from daily hardship walton cohen 2011 p 1449 when students feel like they don t belong in a class they re much less likely to succeed it s interesting that harvard has a similar number of students dropping out of subjects as american colleges where it s much easier to gain entry in theory the students at harvard should all have no trouble with the work because nearly all of them would be topping their subjects in less prestigious institutions the trouble is that the bottom third often start to feel like they re imposters who don t deserve their place causing many of them to give up rather than struggle through so if we know that students perform better when they feel like they belong we need to consider whether what we are doing encourages the non swimmers ok this is my first blog on the literacy matters site as such it s a bit of a work in progress and i may take it down once i ve tinkered with all the layout but i figured that i was better to have something i d actually written than the generic the journey begins that wordpress has as its default page the title of this refers to an analogy i once used where i suggested that the education system used to be akin to a system of teaching kids to swim where we demonstrated the strokes got them to splash around in the water then tested them over fifty metres in a deep pool of course quite a few realised that they d never make it and pulled out the ones who succeeded proved that it s a very successful system and while a few kids drowned that was ok because they were never meant to be swimmers so what can you do naturally as time went on and more and more swimmers were attempting the fifty metre test we realised that it may be a problem when a significant portion of them drowned so we added a couple of shallow lanes so that they could stop and walk if they couldn t swim the whole way while people such as kevin donnelly argued that this was outrageous for a long time most people seemed content with idea that everything should be judged by one fifty metre swim taken at the end of your school career i m tempted to say something about the need for life long swimmers here but i think that i m probably stretched the analogy about as far as one can go i m using a lot of analogies lately i just downloaded a sample of a book called the abcs of how we learn and it gives a strategy for each letter starting with a for analogy it suggests that analogies can allow students to make sense of a new concept by relying on a familiar one taking advantage of their prior knowledge unfortunately you only get the first few pages when you download a sample so i m stuck on analogies until i actually purchase the rest of the book of course i am aware that most people won t have time to read a blog teaching is one those jobs where it seems that nobody has time for anything it s like rowing a leaky boat across a lake see i am stuck on analogies at the moment really must buy the rest of the book not only does one have to row but one also has to grab a cup and start bailing out the water every few minutes so that the boat won t sink if you ask someone why they don t fix the leak or at the very least get a bucket to help with the bailing out the reply is often who has time for that i m busing rowing and bailing here hopefully i can help some of you find
