and i m going swimming shortly but also because i can t stop reading careless people it s 2020 and she s thinking of leaving facebook not before time i think but i guess it s hard to leave somewhere if you ve put a lot into it the sunk costs fallacy and also america is a brutal place for people without jobs you lose your health care and all sorts of other benefits and it occurs to me that facebook is basically america in microcosm it starts with a dream which is attractive to lots of people but ends with a nightmare i forget who it was possibly cory doctorow who said i ll never forgive them for what they did to the internet and i guess if you really believed in the positive potential of it you d be crushed and disillusioned perhaps the same goes for ai though i don t think many people are under any illusion that it ll be used for good as i ve said before it s not the potential of any invention that counts but who owns and controls it i watched a bit of tennis yesterday long enough to see two more brits go out and my mug came a birthday present from my daughter reminding me not to give in to impostor syndrome when i m on the bike i ve typed bloody autocorrect on my phone reading careless people by sally wynn williams subtitle a story of where i used to work facebook isn t mentioned on the cover but there s that signature blue square with a couple of synchronised swimming type legs coming out of it signifying i guess someone drowning by trying to keep up with the rest of the troupe synchronised swimming is a weird thing anyway the book begins with the horrific story of wynn williams being subjected to a shark attack off the coast of her native new zealand the shark nearly bites through her torso however the horrific part is not so much the behaviour of the shark as that of her parents who refuse to take her symptoms seriously and implicitly believe the doctor who says she ll recover just fine after he stitches her up in fact her bowel has been perforated she vomits blood in the night and hyperventilates to which her mother s response is mind over matter stop hyperventilating whether true or not and i must admit i had my doubts about this particular story you could just imagine a publisher saying you have to have an intense personal story to start this off and her coming up with this but maybe i m wrong it s an excellent metaphor for what later happens when she joins facebook i ll post a full review when i m done but so far it s a horrific and compelling read image removed on request i watched djokovic get through to the third round against tsitsipas last night my god that man plays as well as ever and he s nearly forty it s unfair to compare him to serena williams as he s not had a career break let alone given birth to two children but it is stunning that he s still playing at this level sinner is through too but i didn t watch that much tennis yesterday as it takes a lot of concentration so it was back to careless williams play maya joint of australia there was tremendous excitement about serena coming back to wimbledon at the age of 44 normally if women have a career break it s in their twenties which gives them time to get back in the game if it were any other player i wouldn t have given them a chance but serena is not any other player if anyone could pull this off she could sadly she couldn t she might have been wise to play a couple of tournaments before wimbledon to ease herself in but she didn t she hadn t played a tournament in years and it showed there were moments when it looked as if her expertise and genius would win over her opponent s youth and speed but it was not to be the younger player less than half her age was too quick around the court and her shots were too good serena made too many errors and missed too many balls it was sad not to see her get through instead of being a comeback tour the match had the feel of a farewell concert but at least she had the chance to do it and god knows she s earned that cam norrie is out too i don t know if there are any brits left to go through to the second round anyway yesterday i went to the gym where i started on the moving stairs these are like a more sadistic escalator or the escalator of sisyphus where you never actually get to the top and up to now i ve avoided them because they freak me out it s like paternosters they never stop and you have to get on at the right moment or else you ll get stuck between thy kingdom come and thy will be done anyway i conquered my aversion and got on the thing i only did five minutes just to get the hang of it but i will do more i am determined to climb the criffel and this will help me i also did adductors and abductors free weights and cycling so that s all good i was annoyed with the seagulls at first but i m getting used to them i remember years ago reading about a family who had a swarm of bees in their house and instead of having it removed they learned to live with it so i guess i m doing that though dive bombing seagulls are not as hairy as a swarm of bees we forget how to live with nature if we constantly try to expunge it from our lives apart from the tennis i ve also been watching last tango in halifax i saw this when it first came out 2012 onwards and it s an absolutely stonking series about two elderly people who meet again after fifty years realise they ve been in love with each other all along and get married it s the story of their two families and the tangled web woven by their relationships if you haven t seen it i highly recommend the usual dismal litany of british players crashing out that s if they even started in the first place as top players emma raducanu and jack draper have withdrawn through injury i watched harriet dart lose to jelena ostapenko in a match with flashes of brilliance from the british player but a lack of consistency cameron norrie is also out as are a number of others sigh amazingly serena williams is back she s 44 now and i haven t seen her in action yet but i can t wait to watch she s one of my favourite players they play much longer these days not only in terms of age but they cram more matches into a day starting at eleven and finishing after nine at night of course with the roofs on the show courts they have the option of playing much later than natural light would allow i remember in years gone by how the weather would disrupt matches so a roof was long overdue however it s not an easy thing to regulate the atmosphere in an arena with twenty five thousand bodies all sweating and exhaling into it so it s quite a feat of technology the heatwave seems to be over at least for now it s quite cool here high of 17 and likely to rain most of the day never mind i ve got the tennis to keep me going and i shall definitely tune in to watch serena later i ve found a new room for my yoga class we were outgrowing the church hall so i went to view a place in town sadly it was no bigger and had tables around the edge which i was told couldn t be moved so that was no good i went into the standard building in town to ask about rooms there the woman at the desk said actually i m hiring this room for my pop up shop what was it for when i said it was for a yoga class she got excited and told me she had a dance studio just up the street and was looking to take more bookings unbelievable i waited around and later she took me up there it s not a massive room but will accommodate more students and crucially be warmer in winter we had some problems with the heating in the other place it s not expensive and it s bang in the centre of town with parking nearby so that s all good and a perfect example of serendipity happy tuesday kirk out an accident prone seagull june 29 2026 june 29 2026 sarada gray 7 comments wimbledon starts today a fortnight of tennis which links all my summers right back to 1968 when i was eleven i ve only missed a few a couple of years when i was unemployed and didn t have a telly and the two summers i spent in madrid but apart from that i ve watched it every year i can t explain even to myself why i don t watch other tennis tournaments but i don t i think there are several factors firstly other tournaments even the other three grand slam events the french open the us open the australian open are not broadcast on terrestrial tv the way wimbledon is so they re harder to watch if you don t have something like sky sports plus all tournaments are structured differently have different rules and so on that s not so hard to get your head around but what i can t deal with is all the noise and distraction if you re watching a football match noise is part of the deal but you have to have silence when tennis is being played and at some tournaments the spectators are so noisy even between points jumping up and down and chanting and waving banners that it s hard to concentrate i expect it s great if you re there but one bit i watched i think it was the french open had a group of young women in bright colours with novak painted across their faces holding a banner and jumping up and down chanting at every opportunity even between the first and second serve i ask you i expect i m coming across as terribly old and british but it s just not dignified thankfully wimbledon has a little more gravitas it s getting noisier sure but the crowd is absolutely silent during play and they don t jump up and down between points what s more rather than wearing bright colours on a brightly coloured court the players wear white and the court is green wimbledon is the only slam played on grass and it s on the bbc for all its faults the beeb does wimbledon flawlessly and without ads mind you wimbledon needed loosening up a bit when i was a child british tennis was stuffy snobbish and bound up in ridiculous regulations they paid the price for that for decades in not attracting good players from outside the upper classes so that needed to change not that it has all that much as you still need money and access to courts something notably missing from most state schools we had a great weekend a friend came to visit from leicester and on friday we went to currywala for a meal this is a terrific new indian restaurant where we went for our anniversary and it did not disappoint we started with poppadoms and chutneys and then i had saag paneer a curry with paneer and spinach with puris and a mango lassi oh plumped for aloo bengan potato and cauliflower while our friend had several starters with rice as a main course we were going for a stroll by the river but thunder clouds were threatening so we drove home dropping her at her hotel on saturday i had a bike lesson i wasn t looking forward to it as i hadn t slept well but it was brilliant the best lesson i ve had my instructor says i m ready to look at taking mod 1 so i was really encouraged by that what happens is that a group of us go down to the test centre in carlisle and practise manoeuvres for a couple of hours and then he decides if we re ready i ve decided not to practise manoeuvres on the 125 any more it s so much harder than the 650 and since i m going to take my test on the latter it seems logical to focus on that in the afternoon we drove down the solway to rspb mersehead a nature reserve and bird sanctuary where we walked to the beach there s an interesting mix of jetsam rocks shells and logs on the beach and you can see cumbria quite clearly our friend stayed to dinner and tried some of my home brew a blueberry kit wine which she enjoyed i have to say it s come on in the last few weeks as i write i can hear the jagged mirthless laughter of a parent seagull perched on top of a lamppost while its chick wanders about in our front garden we ve had to be very cautious coming and going as understandably the parent is very protective it dive bombed us the other day as we got out of the car i don t know if this is typical of seagulls if they allow their young to wander about on the ground for a while before they learn to fly or if it just fell from the nest by accident but it s not the only one when we were in town we saw
