fault birds i find when out and about in siouxland when they are a bit shy and restive around strangers who are passing by on a walking trail there is only a couple of these trails at snyder bend park with bushes along the edges last year an american goldfinch was busy eating a meal when this interloper passed by and tried to get some nature shots and the little guy gal kept trying its best to continue eating but also staying out of sight but patience and a little side movement by me to another location gave me a better vantage point without disturbing the bird while it feasted and it better days sits empty in rural woodbury county iowa thursday april 16 2026 small farms in the midwest all had such cribs to store corn for feed for farm animals in the 19th and 20th century photo by jerry l mennenga sometimes when driving about rural iowa in siouxland i come across older farm buildings that once played a part in the agricultural days of the farming in the 20th century and during the 19th century the older now worn out and falling down structures were an important part of the farm scene up until the latter part of the 20th century and into the 21st century these former corn cribs have been replaced by metal barns more durable and longer lasting and round metal grain bins the newer structures age better and provide more protection for equipment than the former wood structures even if they don t as quaint functionality is important for today s farmers and cost effective no need to repaint every few years or replace broken or splintered sections mice and rats don t gnaw at the metal structures either having grown up in the country and remembering seeing these barns through the various places i have lived they too will at some point sooner than later become a blue heron rookery in rural iowa not far from moville and had returned hoping for some sunshine and better photos of the rookery and the herons there but this particular day i also found a few turkey
