urchase on amazon purchase on elj editions praise for scrap salvaging a family a powerful painful family saga that slowly gives way to hard won understanding a richly detailed harrowing account of household mayhem and the struggle to forgive kirkus reviews starred review spare precise and quietly devastating this is the kind of memoir that stays in the body long after the reading is done the book revue leave a comment filed under scrapsalvagingfamily tagged as experimental nonfiction luanne castle memoir memoir in flash scrap salvaging a family by luanne august 3 2026 6 00 am my review of deborah brasket s this sea within deborah brasket blogs at writing on the edge of the wild this sea within deborah brasket s new novel is not a departure from when things go missing in writing quality as both books are obviously written by a skilled craftsperson or in the search for identity at the heart of the stories but in every other respect it is a vastly different book this sea within is driven by passion and courage the protagonist lena a sheltered american college graduate travels to the fictional country of san balanque to learn more about herself soon after arriving she discovers that she will jump into life feet first without looking back as she throws her lot in with the freedom fighters based largely on her passionate love for raoul the leader of the rebels it seems like quite the leap to transform from the pacifist to a cult figure of the movement but the reader witnesses lena making that move step by step brasket keeps the reader in suspense throughout as the secret of who lena s mother is hangs over her head throughout much of the book the writing style features gorgeous descriptions of the beauty of the jungle and the opening scene describing lena and the ocean as she is surfing is a knockout i can only imagine the extensive research brasket had to do to write this story the top layer thread of the book is the relationship between lena and raoul which is a torrid love affair with beautifully written sex scenes but perhaps the most hidden layer of the story i only realized after i finished the book it pertains to what happens when we connect our lives with someone else and how that can change us no spoiler alert here you ll have to read the book for yourself order here 18 comments filed under amreading book review fiction tagged as amreading book recent blog post of hers was a reposting of her fantabderful yup needed a portmanteau word review of my poetry book doll god who has been blogging for a long time you will know that she is a woman of many talents most recently she has been putting her skills into some very serious knitting marie and i go way back in fact she was a beta reader for scrap and wins the award for reading the most versions she helped me figure out how to go about a very very intro level knitting project i could go on but i popped on here to share with you marie s knitting talent yesterday i received a package in the mail it was in a plastic ups type bag and inside that was a brown bag and inside that was a beautiful package wrapped in different colored tissues with a net bow just lovely then such a sweet card that i ll keep it forever what was inside the package this absolutely gorgeous wrap have you ever seen anything so beautiful i have not look at the intricate pattern and i love the colors some of my favorites mixed together and changing from the ends to the middle it s so soft and generously long i spent some time prancing around the house in the wrap haha omigoshes flying through the air since i hate posting pix of myself i was going to post a pic of the wrap just lying there but i soon realized it didn t do it justice it needs an appreciative person inside it so here i am modeling this gorgeousness thank you sooooooooo much marie for your beautiful gift and your friendship and your cats and your essence 27 comments filed under art and music blogging tagged as 1writeway blog from researching this includes bloggers influencers and journalists feedspot is an rss reader that lets you subscribe to blogs news sites and any website you want to keep up with but they are pretty aggressive and i don t know how great their assessment is ahem i only know about them because i ve gotten a couple of emails from the founder letting me know that my blog this blog is listed as one of the top ten art journaling blogs how long has it been since i have posted about art journaling ugh too long my blog is listed as 9 seriously 1 is everyday art kasia avery s wonderful art blog i ve studied with her and also with the amazing amy at mindful art at 5 so because of their presence i m going to post a link to the list top ten art journaling blogs and so that i can bring you up to date i ll post today a little something about mixed media collage because i found it through art journaling art journaling is what allows you to experiment with new products and just have fun make a mess even i try to bring that joy into working on my collages i haven t been able to work on my collages or hudson s baby art journal as much as i would like because of working on scrap promo and the doll god reprint i recently had four new mixed media collages accepted by one of my favorite journals anti heroin chic for the fall issue collages come in almost as many types and styles as there are collage artists and it sometimes shocks me how quickly i found my collage style found sound was nominated for best of the net by raw lit in 2025 notice how my collage style is to use cuttings from vintage life magazines and to place them on neutral backgrounds prepared with mixed media such as acrylics pastels and use of gel plates and stencils i particularly love working with soft pastels and pan pastels because of how they work with water and smudging i like to burn rip and stitch things as i collect my clippings to arrange on the background themes float through my mind and often times the final result has more of an edge than i dreamed of at the beginning have you tried an art journal yet i have a feeling you will love it 33 comments filed under art and music art journaling writing by luanne july 13 2026 6 06 am tornado salvaging sharing a few more photos i found scanning there are two micro stories in scrap salvaging a family about the may 13 1980 tornado in kalamazoo michigan pp 90 92 in paperback it s sort of a transition period in the book where i am now an adult albeit young whereas what had come before in the book was focused on coming of age it s also foreshadowed by an earlier scene of being a kid in the basement during a tornado warning scrap is comprised of three parts and the tornado is the end of part i i mention how my father bought up storefronts that nobody else seemed to want and tried to fix them up just enough to rent them as he had little money to invest in remodelling i describe a wooden canvas hanging on the wall of my father s store what i think is that he makes something usable that wasn t he doesn t have the money to make them beautiful but every once in a while he recognizes something that is inside the luggage store he s hung a board that a painter used to clean his brushes he calls it his jackson pollack sic weirdly even though i remember looking up the correct spelling of the artist s name i still misspelled it in the book for some reason i want it to be spelled pollack instead of pollock maybe it s because for all its interesting details it s still a fake if you read scrap you might realize why the theme of fake resonates with me dad s jackson pollock on the wall here are a couple of photos of the tornado that day gilmore brothers department store the entire back wall of the 5 story building was blown off isb bank building all the windows were blown out 27 comments filed under scrapsalvagingfamily coming of age family family history flash memoir flash nonfiction history hybrid a certain character from the book marygold named by blog readers she is the doll on the book cover and she s lurking inside too since the book is catching up with the times maybe i need to make marygold an updated outfit and get her a toy cell phone marygold or not the book is more about art and nature and ghost and angels than it is about dolls although there are certainly doll poems in the collection i have a request for friends who reviewed doll god at the time it was published would you consider copying your same review and posting it over on the ebook on amazon hoping that amazon won t stop that process update as of this morning it appears amazon put the reprint ebook with the original paperback if it stays that way it means all the reviews are together which is good we we will
