pictures and stories of life sometimes life is like that skip to content pictures and stories of life sometimes life is like that about lynette d arty cross recent posts it s wednesday a little brightness unfathomable sunflower monday thank you australia mexico and new zealand about i m a retired administrator pilot and instructor who loves photography especially landscape photography something i can now do to my heart s content twitter facebook instagram it s wednesday august 19 2026 i hope you have a good one a little brightness august 16 2026 the forest fire that s very nearby is still out of control but it has changed directions making us and the other closest community much safer we have had a bit of relief from the dense smelly smoke but we have to enjoy those little breaks when we can since windless conditions or a change the wind direction means that we become enveloped once more in orange level air quality warnings during one of these breaks i was able to take some flower photos it was nice to be able to get in a bit of a ramble in relatively good air happy sunday unfathomable august 12 2026 shrouded in a jaundiced grey miasma overhead engines muffled heard but not seen as they fly through the murky air darryl dyck the canadian press masks again no pandemic but a plague of smoke and ash and jagged charcoal like nubs falling from the sky eyes watering throat itching the damage to sky and earth and all living things unfathomable darren hull afp getty images we hosted young men so very very young from a fire crew for showers it s the least we can do sunflower monday august 10 2026 i hope your week is lovely and sunny and bright yellow too with lots of good things thank you australia mexico and new zealand august 7 2026 british columbia is presently inundated by forest fires but we are getting significant help and support from australia mexico and new zealand to those countries thank you very very much your arrival and generosity is greatly greatly appreciated the conditions they re here to help with there are currently 110 forest fires burning throughout british columbia more than half of them out of control and there is now a fire threatening metro vancouver wildland firefighters from mexico s national forestry commission arrive at abbotsford international airport on monday ethan cairns the canadian press the pictures below show fires that are not far from me fintry and lake country are only a few kilometres further up okanagan lake due north from my home in penticton a helicopter conducting night operations prepares to drop water on a wildfire burning on the west side of okanagan lake near fintry b c on monday darryl dyck the canadian press the air quality is brutal but what we are dealing with here in penticton is nothing compared with what all those who have been evacuated or have already completely lost their homes and possessions are facing people in lake country b c watch as the quilpituk creek wildfire burns on the mountainside across okanagan lake darryl dyck the canadian press these aren t the only fires in this country there are presently 715 many of them extreme and out of control and they are particularly bad in british columbia northwest territories and ontario climate change at work a gusty walk august 5 2026 surges of wind riled water and unsettled waves sent lake weed to the shore where the canada geese made short work of it eurasian watermilfoil myriophyllum spicatum is an aggressive invasive freshwater plant that has found its way into the okanagan valley s water systems it grows in dense mats in shallow areas interfering with water oxygenation native lake grass growth fish and bird habitat and recreational activities in summer the okanagan basin water board mows the weed from water surfaces and in the winter destroys the root systems by rototilling the lake floor a new week august 3 2026 wishing you a good one bye july august 2 2026 from a weather perspective july has been rather mixed to say the least we started on the first of the month with canada day celebrations but even then there were concerns about the lack of rain heat drought and how baked everything was but that didn t stop the hydrangeas from sharing their beauties and the evenings from producing lovely skies including cloud formations with the sun undercoating the greyness in tangerine brightness marmot sentries guarded the close of day while dogs and their people cooled off in the lake and hydrangeas continued to grow and develop attracting bees as other shrubs provided glorious hibiscus blooms in the end we couldn t escape the forest fires though the smoke from both the north and south has at times been intense yesterday my car was covered in ash and bits of burned trees but to conclude this roundup here s a little humour courtesy of david parkins and michael de adder welcome august july 31 s friday fleurday july 31 2026 yesterday another year completed its turn around the sun for me and as one year piles up on another i m very reminded of the intense value of all the little things that make living wonderful like these wild roses that were merrily and brightly growing among a pile of rocks weeds and junk in a decrepit garden happy long weekend friday wine on the vine july 29 2026 growing and developing preparing to provide happiness months or years
