one day to the next at a borders loch posted on august 16 2026 by lynne henderson fisher lindean loch approach it s what is sure to be the final hot day of the summer and my friend and i have just squeezed our cars into the rows of parked vehicles close to the entrance to lindean loch a popular spot for seasonal recreation in the scottish borders we are not here to frolic in fun but to savour our last truly warm swim of the summer but as we trudge along the leafy path stippled with colourful splashes of red campion and rosebay willowherb with our bags of kit to the entry point where the old boathouse used to be a lady with a dog approaches she s wearing printed patterned dungarees looks a little hot and bothered and she s also wearing a frown her alsatian lollops up to my friend alison instinctively knowing she has a similar doggy buddy at home so is sure to engage in a game of throw and fetch the stick or stone but the dog must patiently wait because the lady stops to talk irritation oozes out of her and i am immediately hooked because i m feeling annoyed myself i have just decided i want the summer over so that swims can be less like a family fun day with the screams of children the shouts of adults the pumping up or deflating of paddle boards with that loud hissing of escaping air eager to be released and the barking of dogs in any event the lady in the striped dungarees and of the same age group as us has something to say and having identified alison and i as kindred spirits as far as the loch is concerned she can t just walk on by she needs to unburden her anger where it might receive some sympathy in contrast to where she has just asserted herself by the busy entry point to the loch to no avail and of course it s the multitude of people who have riled her the people with their families who are not here in the spring autumn or winter when the wildlife claim back the loch as theirs along with the wild swimmers who don t leave rubbish who don t light fires or have barbecues and who don t plump their paddle boards and launch onto the loch the lady tells us that someone asked where the swans were and she told them they d probably been frightened away by all the people someone else said so what and another problematic person had parked so close to her car that she couldn t get her dog into the back to go home after her walk so she d returned to the old boathouse site and asked the person with the offending car first to identify themselves and then to move it they wouldn t after all they are in the water enjoying themselves and no doubt thought the lady was overreacting it s all a matter of perspective you see and differing perspectives is at the heart of this post the fact is the loch is open to the public as long as they respect nature take their dog poo home along with their picnic packaging and wet clothes and don t set alight to anything and certainly not do said things on what tom sawyer might well have called the island a scots pine studded section of the loch side barely connected to the shore and tantalising to venture upon this island is where summer campers sometimes come where they do set a fire and where the occasional hammock is slung but as long as people only go into the water where the old boathouse used to be not elsewhere due to avoid disturbing the wildlife then all should be well do they obey these rules only partially as you might expect the island so after duly commiserating with the irate lady who wants the summer people gone when alison and i arrive at the entry point it is indeed dotted with people of all ages with camp chairs and rugs and picnic paraphernalia so now we break the rules too deciding there is simply no simply room for us we go further along to find a small secluded spot where we can be private in our post swimming changing and our coffee flask conversational bliss just imagine our dismay when we see signs of human use with scattered towels and mats but not to be deterred there is another place one we have never used before but intrepid paddle boarders certainly have plodding past the purple flowering heather clumps we descend the tiny grassy path imagine our pleasure to find it free of humans this time just perfect we wade out and swim contently for forty minutes or so while further away the paddle boarders do their thing with distant murmours distant chatting this is fine this is what we are used to what we like and there is no screaming today from determined teenagers jumping in from a dangerous entry point despite the warnings to keep off because there are concrete shelving blocks beneath covered in slime no not today and afterwards as we sit on the bank i think of autumn when the water is colder the rowan berries are already a sign of the colour to come when the water changes to choppy or mill pond where the clouds chase the sun overhead where the baked earth of summer becomes softer with the rains and the trees begin to cast their golden leaves rowan tree berry cluster and as we walk back along the path to the car park feeling relaxed and massaged by our swim we glance down at the throng and i see a council lady with a lanyard head down inspecting the site i know her from the past she s a faithful to nature person a dedicated person but i leave her in her zone someone may have complained or they are doing a check i don t know but it is the summertime when we really appreciate being able to use this loch so freely during the year with no entry fees no private land signs to exclude us not any prohibitions simply adhering to the right to roam we have in scotland because you see it is summer when this freedom is threatened the most and is it the raised complaints which can jeopardise this i think that is why we have such mixed feelings happy people enjoying some leisure time and angry ladies with their swimming kit or their dogs such is life and here we turn from this day to the next my partner and i have come for a walk around the loch s circumference the very next day the aim is to experience the loch from a different mindset and it certainly delivers i amble along the path through the trees finding nature to examine rosebay willow herb stems are fluffy with their white spidery seeds the tall grasses are bleached to golden by the lack of rain and a tangent path leads to a designated walking route striking up a bleached field bordered by a dry stone dyke with a stand of firs on the horizon this is classic border country there are far fewer people here today we don t even pass a dog walker just a determined jogger and it s cooler today the heat worshippers from yesterday must be stated from their recreation but through the trees do come the faint splashes of a few paddle boarders to remind us we are walking around a lake and it adds to the atmosphere it s evocative and sitting under an old gnarled pine tree we see someone struggling to get back on their board as it tips and tilts beyond their grasp apart from this struggle all is so serene dried golden grasses border country from under the pine i notice some broom with its black brown seed heads fluffy and twisted and i remember once hearing them on a scorching sultry day on another walk another day years ago but never forgotten the seed heads in the heat were exploding with popping sounds to fling their glossy polished seeds into the air and i marvelling at it just how incredible is that broom seed heads as we reach the far end of the loch where shady trees merge with thick reeds we see no swans no canada geese no herons this is where they are usually safe but they re not showing themselves today and on the way back around i explore the other places along the shore the different depths of water the fluttering reeds and knot weeds the occasional lily beds it really is a beautiful place of shifting perspectives viewpoints and outlooks depending on where you stand and stare depending on the days and the seasons and it persuades to remind me how we must always allow for these in our life always we must encounter places and people with an open mind and heart and i will think of the loch if i being all too human should falter and as marcus aurelius wrote in his meditations if you are distressed by anything external the pain is not due to the thing itself but to your estimate of it and this you have the power to revoke at any moment a good point to end with until next time the reeded jetty in use in yesteryear far right share this share on facebook opens in new window facebook share on pinterest opens in
