out the description and cover which i love btw below in the small mountain town of amorea it s stretching toward autumn of 1954 the memories of a world at war are fading in the face of a prosperous future doors are left unlocked at night and neighbors are always there to give each other a helping hand the people here know certain things as fact amorea is the best little town there is the only good commie is a dead commie the women s club of amorea runs the town with an immaculately gloved fist and bookstore owner mike frazier loves that boy down at the diner sean mellgard why they haven t gotten their acts together is anybody s guess it may be the world s longest courtship but no one can deny the way they look at each other slow and steady wins the race or so they say but something s wrong with mike he hears voices in his house late at night there are shadows crawling along the walls and great clouds of birds overhead that only he can see something s happening in amorea and mike will do whatever he can to keep the man he loves expected publication october 2026 top ten tuesday bookish places i ve visited 25 august 2026 filed under book reviews tags book review book blog bookish places i ve visited books fiction reading that artsy reader girl top ten tuesday 3 responses top ten tuesday is a weekly meme where every tuesday we look at a particular topic for discussion and use various or more to the point ten bookish examples to demonstrate that particular topic top ten tuesday created and hosted by the broke and bookish is now being hosted by that artsy reader girl and future week s topics can be found here this week s prompt is bookish places i ve visited i like this topic and i could have expanded but here are a few books where i m familiar with the setting the stranger times series by ck mcdonnell this is a fantastic series that i absolutely love and have no hesitation recommending it s unique urban fantasy with amazing characters great story lines and its set in manchester which is my home town the parasol protectorate by gail carriger which was set in london mostly this was a very witty charming and sexy series i am ashamed to admit that i didn t finish the series it s one of my guilty confessions but i still have the last book to look forward to dracula by bram stoker whitby comes into focus in this novel with it s gothic abbey and small seaside village the outlander by diana gabaldon set in scotland and other locations along the way i visited the highlands for a couple of months and it is simply the most stunningly breathtaking place seriously stunning the unicorn hunters by katherine arden is set in france brittany i believe a really beautifully written book and i might also mention that i ve visited so many places in france and love it the labyrinth by kate mosse it s a long time since i read this but this was also based in france carcassonne i enjoyed this very much carcassonne is a beautiful walled fortified city stunning to walk around and full of history the name of the rose by umberto eco another book that i read a long time ago certainly pre blog set in an italian monastery okay i may not have visited a monastery per se but italy is so beautiful so much history architecture and fantastic food and drink the shadow of the wind by carlos ruiz zafón a great book from a very long time ago i seem to be on a roll set in barcelona which i ve only briefly passed through and intend to return captain corelli s mandolin by louis de bernieres again i ve travelled back in time for this one this is set on the greek island of cephallonia i haven t visited this particular island but greece is greece am i wrong and i ve been to crete anyway gorgeous place people and food i can t wait to go back and visit some more islands the island by victoria hislop again a throwback an intriguing book that takes us to the island of spinalonga an island i visited whilst on holiday in crete strangely enough i d read the book fairly recently and so to be able to visit the island was really intriguing this is a place with a rich history concluding with its time as a leper colony as described in the book booking ahead weekly wrap today i m posting my weekly wrap up and i m linking up to the sunday post over at kimberly s caffeinated reviewe r without further ado weekly update the weather has finally changed thankfully a little bit of rain and more forecast next week it s been a busy week and also a bit up and down for me for some reason i m in a very unusual mood which has definitely had an impact on my reading i finished reading the house that eats the dead by max doty and found it very entertaining next i picked up daggerbound by t kingfisher but for some reason and very unexpectedly i found myself unable to sink into this one and so i ve set it aside for now i then picked up they say a girl died here by sarah pinborough and i m also struggling with this two of my favourite authors and two very highly anticipated books and yet i ve had to set them aside it s clearly my mood i don t know what s going on with me anyway it is what it is next week s reads i m going to wait for a few weeks to retry the kingfisher and pinborough books and see if that makes a difference instead i m going to pick up a couple of september review books aphrodite in pieces by lauren ja bear and kiss slay reply by rachel max doty review the house that eats the dead writing 6 responses my five word tl dr review a good time was had i m just going to be honest more often than not when i request a book i don t read the description or i just skim the parts that really interest me i know what sort of book i like and i also have a number of authors that i will hit request for in a new york minute if i see a new release on the horizon so going into thtetd well firstly this was a new to me author and i had no real idea what it was about other than the title which i also hold my hands up i rather lead myself down the garden path with and thought it was going to be more of a killing house i don t know why i though that but i did as it happens and again confession when i picked this up it was almost begrudgingly and with the expectation that it wasn t going to win me over i was wrong there you go this was very entertaining i had no problem eating this up at all in fact the only problem i had was putting it down considering how busy i ve been recently i ended up staying up into the early hours to finish it original strangely horrible and very addictive now first off i m going to forewarn some of you out there and you know who you are there is a family dog and it unfortunately has a fatal accident i don t want to give away spoilers but let me just say that the house does not kill the dog and yes i was upset because i m a dog lover and have two dogs i m not a lover of the demise of the family pet any more than i am a lover of the girlfriend wife who dies in the first few chapters of a book as a means of provoking revenge or payback or whatever in the husband boyfriend to an extent yes i guess the author did use this death to ease readers into what s really happening with the house and before you all break out the pitchforks and torches let me just say he s much more ruthless with the people he lets go and some of them were equally innocent i m just stating this to help you make an informed decision really the whole family dog demise might be enough to put some readers off this so you have been warned moving on claire and tom have decided to move from the city and have finally found a house that they think is perfect for their family they re not the only ones bidding this is a popular house in a very sought after area and a tough economic market too they can t really afford to go too high claire finally writes a very personal letter of submission and the family find themselves the lucky owners of a new house straight away there are odd things strange noises at night things just seem to go missing are they displaced it s all very odd okay everyone puts things down or more to the point thinks they ve put things in a specific place only to find them somewhere else with this house that s totally different but i won t say more other than things escalate i really don t want to ruin this for anyone else and part of the fun for me was the uniqueness of this and discovering it for myself instead here s what worked well firstly the author doesn t try to explain things there is no explanation i don t know whether this is a haunted house story in the traditional sense because that usually involves an entity of some sort that has passed away but lingers and haunts people so this isn t really a haunting it s more like the house is sentient how i have no idea and frankly i also don t care that much to know because any explanation would probably be trite at best just go with the flow this house feels it knows it understands and it can learn if you could have a pet house well here it is i wonder how much i can tell you well the clue is really in the title so this house eats what is dead your oak table and chairs used to be alive cut flowers pieces of chicken or fish in your fridge pages of a book what is paper made of i never really thought of this but it makes you think in a very surface level way because you re too busy moving on with the story which is quick paced and relentless and frankly compulsive the characters i liked claire she is pretty crazy at points and you may be reading and thinking really but her nickname as a younger women did involve the word chaos and whilst she s turned into some sort of yummy middle class very well heeled woman secretly she feels like she s become a different version of herself this definitely feeds into the story also the house changes people it s a hungry house and there s nothing like the power of suggestion to a mind that either wants power or popularity or even just a bedtime story it s a clever house more than that it attracts lets just say the wrong sort this could be a very useful house to certain people it eats things evidence even history sometimes it makes things too easy it really is a fantastic concept the writing is good the pace is good the story is good it feels really unique and i was gripped and entertained this was good entertaining easy to read and enjoyable don t expect deep and meaningful as such although there is a theme here about abuse of power and more so right and wrong and how easy it is to make the wrong choices if they make your life simpler i
