passages from my trilogy whose first translated volume guard us from evil has been published while the other two the knight s twist and apotheosis also translated are about to be published the first passage is taken from the knight s twist here as in the other novels there is an underlying neoplatonic and neopythagorean current my prose sometimes adopts a classical tone something that is not particularly fashionable today but i like it that way ψ we are in ad 510 in britannia in the land of the angles at derdriu s home maximus and derdriu a red haired woman with blazing locks had previously fought in the woods and she had emerged victorious maximus had then been captured by camilla a friend of derdriu s and was about to be sacrificed in a ritual but derdriu had saved him the redhead had subsequently taken him to her dwelling among the forests yet she still harboured resentment towards the romans for reasons explained in the passage that follows ψ the emotion overwhelmed derdriu like an avalanche crashing down a mountainside you filthy fucking roman you and my father she hurled herself at him with unheard of violence but the neopythagorean withstood the impact and wrenching both her arms behind her back forced her down onto her knees arched backwards before him then straddling her with his legs apart he pinned her more firmly his pelvis pressed against her full breasts his sex involuntarily close to her face she shuddered and he too his senses shaken after the conquest some had begun to see you as superior beings who could have helped us her voice still burning softened almost imperceptibly they remained in that position a few moments of uneasy silence followed but in the end we realised that your civilisation was nothing but a subtler way of enslaving us they rose disoriented the position had grown awkward the woman adjusted her dress and the sword at her side what has your father got to do with it maximus asked curious my father was a roman dog he found my mother in a forest where she had lost her way she was nine years old her parents had been killed and she was trying to make her way back to an uncle a sorcerer respected among the angles for his powers after seeing my father she clung to him desperately and cried that she did not want to live without him my father decided to take her with him and loved her only once she had become a woman he began to instruct her in the culture of a rome now vanished she already so skilled in the ancient knowledge of herbs and trees she sat down on the sofa and wiped her brow it was beaded with sweat her body smelled of musk her anger began to rise again i don t mean he did not love her i don t even know whether he acted out of condescension but the arrogance i see in you and hate may well have been his once more in command of himself maximus gently caressed her arm but she i hate you i hate you both with all my heart she spat in his face and began to invade his mind caught off guard again manius reacted swiftly and blocking the psychic intrusion hurled her back onto the sofa pinning her down with the steely strength of his pythagorean body then he seized her hair stood between them and the fulfilment of that sudden sublime absolute desire and they began to fight a different battle one that lasted the whole night a battle of emotions of mingling breaths of bodies joining to soothe the wounds of the soul i an old man have few words to describe that night in their hopes it was the dawn that would release them from a season of dark sorrow and like two beautiful butterflies borne along by the breeze and made tireless by the sky s blue light so their desire never came to rest and now gentle now aflame it seemed to touch all things the following morning waking early manius papirius maximus gazed at the girl deep in sleep with two cats one orange one grey curled at her feet she was of a startling beauty her flame coloured hair spread across the covers and though here and there she bore scars one even upon her cheek this did not lessen her beauty rather it sharpened it for it is the union of order and disorder that at times moves us are not the cosmos and our soul so and this was true of her legs as well less than perfect and yet for that very reason splendid he rose and walked out into the garden he thought of delia who embodied the same principle her legs were worthy of the greatest sculptor yet her true strength lay in those blue eyes with a faint beguiling squint which made her gaze superb and deceptive from somewhere the melancholy sound of a harp rose and joined the music of the world maximus thought that what was painful the wreckage of his life the inexorable decline of his mother livia cilnia and of delia once pure and then wed to an old man for advantage that which was discordant and harsh might find its place within the higher harmony of the universe reflections that consoled him in part the melancholy notes reached the bedroom and touched the warrior s ears as she slept deeply languid and sated when she awoke she opened her eyes and reaching out found that the roman was not there she searched for him with her mind and sensed that he was near yet his heart was away she thought of her father who had abandoned her and tears flowed down her cheeks when maximus entered the room she felt that his heart had returned and drew him to her they made love and a great happiness flooded them once more so changeable is the spirit of the young then sensing themselves close to the highest good they of my trilogy the three sides of the coin entitled apotheosis has already been published in italian the english translation is complete but has not yet been published here is the introduction author s introduction bringing this third volume to completion was not easy the threads that had to be retied indeed the many narrative strands left unresolved did not close up by themselves some had hidden so well that i had to chase them for page after page with the vague sensation of playing hide and seek i often identified with the exhausted old narrator who writes with his fountain pen of course i used my pc but cafés endless days and the occasional existential bewilderment were never in short supply there are more surprises in these pages than in the previous volumes plot surprises genuine narrative twists at a certain point i even began to surprise myself was that a sign the characters had taken on a life of their own or should i worry at nearly eighty people have told me that the novel and especially its ending are ambitious whether i overstepped is for readers to judge what i can say is that i had fun writing it besides this is part of what the trilogy a tale of love and adventure is about at my age an eventful life is scarce inventing one on the page is a pleasure and let s be honest a pretty decent exercise in survival throughout the trilogy the register shifts deliberately it moves from a low tone jokes dialects the occasional comic strip scene to a higher voice which in this third volume becomes more explicit and looks towards propertius milton and dante there is melodrama too which i enjoy and which warms me and the ancient philosophical and religious traditions i have tried not to betray while still offering a personal novelistic version of them
