nast from seattle and appropriately she was the first girl of the year that i got to pick out at the seattle ag store she has a movie with bad acting she struggles in school dyslexia and her parents run a coffee shop because apparently that s the only thing you can do in seattle i don t love gymnastics as a doll theme because the dolls don t look good in leotards and we had to do it twice in the girl of the year line mckenna gets bonus points because she had a decent wardrobe of non gymnastics outfits like the fancy dress in the photo and her character reappears in goty 2023 lila s book as a gymnastics coach mckenna also has a very nice wig of a realistic dark blonde color 2013 saige saige might be my most favorite of the girls of the year but i don t wanna hurt any of the other girls feelings her only miss i can t keep her side braid tidy but she inspired me to wear a side braid more often making me fully prepared to meet frozen s elsa for the first time later that year she also inspired me to take a trip to balloon fiesta to new mexico i was just so taken by her artistic southwest vibe she was the first doll i got to buy in person on january 1 and it was really fun to be part of that in store experience 2014 isabelle i also got to go to the ag store on january 1 for isabelle s debut but she was a little more disappointing than saige we had already done a dance theme with marisol her outfits were packaged as mix and match so you had to drop more money to get individual outfits but her sewing studio in the photo is exquisite i keep all her outfits inside it and for this reason none of isabelle s outfits have come out since i moved to my current house in 2016 until this week and when you compare her dancewear to marisol s and 2017 s gabriela isabelle s is superior here s a photo with isabelle s wardrobe pieces and mid year we got a pink dance outfit released though i seriously think today s opinions are biased because the outfits have been packed away for 9 years and feel like a new surprise isabelle s hair has removable pink extensions and there s hardly any pink ag wasn t brave enough to make them permanent but they aren t anymore in fact i think they ve gone overboard with dolls with brightly colored hair but i think isabelle could get away with more or at least have extensions that don t fall out so often 2015 grace i was very excited for grace because she goes to paris in her stories and i was really into travel in 2015 i m still really into travel but i was just getting started in 2015 but because she can t be interested in only one thing most of grace s collection is about baking i don t mind baking but i found it really odd that in her books she wasn t allowed to turn on the oven and do you remember her bakery i didn t buy it but it was massive the biggest and most expensive item we had seen so far ooh i found a photo i took in the store i find the color combos in her wardrobe a bit strange do red and turquoise go together is the outfit in that photo a dress or an apron but i can overlook that because her freckles blue eyes and shiny brown hair are so gorgeous grace looks good in pretty much everything i didn t take grace to paris but i took her to fake paris inside epcot over the years grace has stayed in my mind as the girl who loves travel and for that reason she has stayed one of my favorites 2016 lea that s my very first photo of lea on the ferry ride home i didn t like her at first her theme is too close to jess s and i didn t want jess to have competition she got 3 books and strangely i can t remember what happens in them other than the obvious she goes to brazil she also got a movie that i watched once didn t like so now can t remember but i remember it was nothing like the books her wardrobe had 2 swimsuits and multiple tropical dresses i like her hiking gear and her fancy dress but i could live without her other outfits she has exclusive earrings but did not come with pierced ears same as grace and they are super cute a kayak that is nowhere near as cool as the kayak maplelea released that year and even bigger than grace s bakery a rainforest hut but to me it was more fun that a bakery and i got it on sale the following year in fact i ended up getting lea s entire collection because so much of it ended up on sale the following year pretty impressive for a character i didn t even like but the doll is lovely and wears other outfits well 2017 gabriela poor gabriela she s the only goty to just be a copy of a girl of today just like you myag truly me did i get all the names i wasn t too disappointed by that because i didn t already have tm46 and she is a pretty one the biggest disappointment came a month later when tenney came out with a bigger collection than gabriela s tenney s nice but why couldn t she just wait until 2018 to give gabriela a whole year of glory but that s not the only disappointment the quality of gabriela s clothing is at american girl s lowest they were in boxes to be sold at toys r us cheap packaging thin fabrics as little fabric as possible all of her outfits are dancewear even though most of her books are about spoken word poetry and gabriela s life in school gabriela s books might be the best of the goty collection 2017 was the year of the permapanties i got my gabriela early in the year so she thankfully escaped that horror poor gabriela my gabriela s first photo 2018 luciana after 3 dancers a gymnast an artist figure skating horseback riding baking and a summer at the beach luciana s love of space and science is a breath of fresh air too bad all her accessories are plastic for that reason i couldn t justify her giant space capsule but i love some of her smaller plastic pieces a maker station with legos a little astronaut souvenir a robot dog taking luciana home luciana s collection i like luciana s wardrobe though the quality is still pretty low the midyear release was a sparkly black dress and i imagine luciana gets invited to lots of fancy parties like when she wins the nobel prize for physics 2019 blaire the antithesis of luciana dark haired who likes space and robotics blaire is fair skinned and likes cooking and party planning she has a new skin tone for the goty line and i m still not used to it blaire s first photo dolls wearing blaire s wardrobe hanging out at kit s vegetable stand 2020 joss joss and i have a special connection because she joined the humans on the much needed road trip in the summer of 2020 her hearing aid makes here our first american girl character with a visible disability she has a new face mold that is pretty adorable but her wig is pretty thin and her meet outfit that is a bathing suit and cheap plastic sandals is probably the worst of this group i think her interests of surfing and cheerleading are pretty random so my joss has veered more towards skateboarding and roadtripping she gave her cheerleader outfits to lila the gymnast joss s largest item was a groovy volkswagen bus but i didn t buy it because it s not in scale with julie s vw when she got to my house she kinda settled in to maryellen s camper joss s collection supplemented with some truly me skateboarding sets and maryellen s airstream she borrowed from everyone s closet for our summer road trip and looked beautiful in everything 2021 kira another doll that means more to me because i took her on vacation than her actual story suggests her story takes place in australia which should be interesting but the books fell flat for me i kinda like the adventure vibe of her meet outfit overall her outfits are kinda ugly i haven t taken a doll on vacation since kira went to the american southwest in 2021 so i m gonna leave her photos here this road trip wasn t as successful as the one with joss the previous summer but kira looked beautiful 2022 corinne american girl is definitely brave enough for brightly colored hair now and corinne s is still one of the most extreme another new face mold and this time it s more extreme than joss s corinne s collection is wintry which we haven t seen in the goty line for a while for the first time a character gets a doll to be her little sister and later in the year even gets a doll to be her baby brother i bought all of gwynn s stuff and some extra stuff from the wellie wisher line but when it comes down to it i just don t play with her come to think of it i don t really play with any of corinne s stuff anymore i guess winter just isn t my theme corinne has a large bedroom set which has room for lots of dolls to play in i kept it up for the first few months of 2022 but once warm weather hit it has been in storage ever since and that s the end of my goty photos for whatever reason i haven t taken any photos of kavi lila summer or raquel but i ll make some comments on each of them 2023 kavi i love her because she loves broadway i love her because she brought back marie grace s face mold and looks beautiful i don t love any of her outfits except the wicked costumes that i don t really count as hers i didn t really connect to any parts of her story yoga add bollywood dance and i think that s because she s the first doll to come with only a journal later in the year we got a novel but because it repeated a lot of the parts of the journal it was really boring 2024 lila our first tease of lila had a beautiful orange and pink braid with her name orange and pink are my favorite colors so my imagination started working and getting excited so when lila finally appeared i was disappointed she s a pretty doll but her story is very boring horse camp gymnastics and her outfits are hideous as bad as leotards look on dolls i would be less confused if her meet outfit was a leotard i can see a 10 year old girl owning a pink sparkly leotard but the mock turtleneck that lila wears is baffling to me especially paired with sweatpants lila gets redemption points because mckenna is her gymnastics coach 2025 summer well i thought kavi and lila s collections were rather disparate and they fixed that with summer in result summer s wardrobe is very one note i can t decide if that s an improvement i love summer s pink hair but the wig is a bit thin and i m not sure about her face wow summer might be the girl i m most unsure about her story is about baking particularly dog biscuits she s also trying to start a business feels like a lot of grace overlap 2026 raquel after a couple years of gotys that did not excite me raquel finally has she s a descendant of samantha her meet outfit is a nod to samantha s original dress her collection is pink and lovely but her book is a mess her interests are all over the place deejaying dolphins pickle ball sandwich those into a story about a family reunion and learning about samantha yikes but her collection is enough to inspire my imagination and restore my faith in the goty line she inspired me to pull out all the girls of the year and write this post after all until stopping at the oregon vortex it s a mysterious spot in southern oregon a lot like confusion hill in california and we spent the night in a cool historic hotel in southern oregon it was probably forced us to spend even more time because i remember having to backtrack a few times this first photo is just inside yosemite s eastern entrance at olmsted point yosemite is beautiful so if you don t we explored around the south rim visitors center i ve been to the grand canyon three times now but it was my sister s first visit she left disappointed because smog from recent wildfires made the canyon look quite flat leaving the canyon we headed toward vegas i wanted to stay on the strip but sister was afraid of covid so we ended up in henderson nv we stopped for lunch in kingman az at marjorieeeee i m back writing about a vacation that s almost two years old now i ve tried to find inspiration to continue writing about this vacation but it s been hard to find honestly it s because the vacation got pretty unpleasant we drove too much sister and i didn t always agree and the desert climate and elevation got to be a bit much for these seattleites but i got some nice photos so i
