goliath a venture capitalist decided that a family run bakery was standing in the way of his dream that dream was to make fractional gains on his portfolio he offered a fair price for the business the owner an elderly baker politely declined this business has fed mid town for three generations he said proudly it s what we do it s what you did the venture capitalist replied in bullish fashion and upped the offer substantially the baker chuckled at the bravado and gestured to the towering glass and chrome monstrosities on either side all this yours he enquired every square inch came the assertive reply the elderly man nodded you have enough no amount of coaxing and cajoling could prize the baker from his business the venture capitalist took it as a personal slight whenever he encountered even the tiniest obstacle breeding and experience informed him that he bestrode the world like a colossus as such he adopted the tried and tested method of deluging the baker with a blizzard of litigation he asked to see food hygiene certificates going back decades parking permits architectural drawings and deliberately misappropriated complaints about an adjacent business to kick up a stink having gummed up the works he felt supremely confident that the petulant little man would be out of business in a matter of weeks the city took notice of the david goliath showdown a journalist described the baker as a bug lodged in the gullet of a bird flatly refusing to be swallowed the baker didn t instruct a lawyer nor did he attend the various court summons instead he sent a note that read all i did was say no apparently this man has never heard the word before is it legal to bury me in paperwork and drive my family into bankruptcy simply because he didn t get his way the city didn t think so news of the venture capitalist s underhand practices spread far and wide a poisoned reputation starved him of business he projected strength right up until the moment he defaulted on his debts and was forced to sell for cents on the dollar the man who was no longer a venture capitalist fell upon the charity of his wealthy friends and headed east to take up a largely ceremonial role on a board of directors his debts were sizeable it took a few years to dig himself out he saw it as a hero s journey a meteoric ascent building in pace and tempo to the moment he was able to rent a ferrari for a few days and travel back to the city that had lost its muscle memory of him to confront his nemesis he blazed through mid town like a phoenix from the flames to find that the bakery was no longer there the elderly owner had retired and headed back to the old country unaware that he was embroiled in acrimony his daughter had inherited the business met a man and relocated to chicago the building now housed a bagel shop that benefitted hugely from the previous patron s goodwill deprived of his confrontation the man retreated to an old haunt where he bumped into some ex colleagues from mergers and acquisitions as the drinks flowed he constructed a precarious yarn in which he had banished an adversary and now reigned without equal his ex colleagues smelled weakness
