the work rebecca kane masque spectacle home about us submission guidelines issues friends and kindred spirits masque spectacle masque spectacle an arts literary journal the work rebecca kane september 1 2026 a beautiful kitchen setup not beautiful in the fancy kind of way definitely more of a picturesque rustic scene one of those old fashioned jewel tone painted stoves that looks thrifted to the point you d wonder if it works but its price was in the mid five figures so yeah it works faith works diligently at an oversized marble topped island she s rolling out pie dough and has several matching mixing bowls of varying sizes with different ingredients placed just so around her interestingly there s no flour on her but her stylishly messy bun and naturally flushed face are meant to imply continuous hard labor a smart phone is set up on a small tripod just in front of her but when she looks up with a serene smile of whitened teeth it s not at the phone it s at us when faith speaks to us it s with a natural pace and tone faith i went to yale ever heard of it she laughs head tilted back a nasty ungirlish cackle faith i went to yale drama school with a minor in psychology i was going to do big things i was going to use theatre to change the world bring back the good old days of coliseums filled with people of all ages all incomes all education levels to watch a problem play and learn something feel something in school i was that bitch everyone talked shit about behind her back reaching a frenzied peak right after casting notices for the semester were posted because i got whatever i wanted lady macbeth medea dot in sunday in the park with george sally bowles in cabaret yeah i could sing too bitch really more of an actor i d say but could sing enough to get the damn part i put in my hours of vocal lessons she s done rolling the crust and has moved on to expertly folding it over the sides faith now i haven t sang outside of the shower or a lullaby over a crib in eleven years and guess what six month olds don t like mein herr and my husband doesn t like my singing voice can you imagine no really take a second and fucking imagine you re a pre law student at yale with a c average you see cabaret not because you like musicals but because there s extra credit for the mandatory arts credit you re barely passing you start crushing hard on the female lead so you pursue her ruthlessly i m talking flower deliveries for every performance front row seats standing dinner invites to the best restaurant a college student can afford well okay one with a father who s the ceo of a fortune 500 company and a full year later she agrees to be your girlfriend and another year later she agrees to marry you and a month later she s pregnant and she drops out with one semester to go and moves out with you to wyoming of all places and you decide to tell her one day while she s singing to your one week old baby you know i don t really like your voice when you sing like that just not my cup of tea she s got some sort of flour milling device faith you know what is his cup of tea turns out farms and children five of them so far and you know what else is his cup of tea the last sentence was spat with venom faith leaning over toward the camera then the husband appears he s dressed in something like worker s overalls or a rugged pair of jeans and boots but mysteriously there s not much dirt on them when he steps in without missing a beat she rights her posture and speaks to the camera with a light airy soothing tone of voice faith a cup of tea is my favorite treat at the end of night chamomile picked fresh from my windowsill planter always soothes me to sleep after a long day of work and i ll be so ready to hit they hay after this special treat for my hardworking hubby i let him suggest whatever he wanted for a treat today since we re celebrating husband sorry babe she lets a crack in her veneer slip just a bit before recovering she taps her phone to pause it faith hey sweetie i was just filming something so husband tommy was asking for the applesauce couldn t find it in the outside fridge faith it s in a mason jar husband there are a lot of jars didn t we talk about the labeling system changing it up faith we also talked about filming things for the account i thought husband right i thought we said maybe you d take a break from that faith i don t remember that my follower count is growing exponentially and we could really use the extra ad revenue husband i know i know i was just kidding he obviously wasn t she gives him a light touch faith i know the applesauce is in the mason jar with the lattice pattern and the silver lid toward the back left behind the beets he exits she looks back to the camera her voice drops back into a natural dissatisfaction as she speaks while popping the pie crust into the oven faith homemade blueberry pie a la mode with homemade ice cream his favorite apparently since i asked him yesterday at least with bitterness she plops a glass jug of weird looking milk on the table faith now guess who s got to churn milk all damn day she pours it into a bowl along with stuff like sugar and vanilla preferably straight from a vanilla bean or jar of homemade extract faith i was supposed to go collect the eggs from the chickens but who knows what ll happen now they ll pile up and up and up the chickens will just keep uselessly laying them in hideous stacks some of them will get crushed under the weight and they ll crack open and dry into a damp crust of yellow and orange yolk goo on the bottom of the cage i know how they feel the chicken or the egg you may ask i have no idea i have no fucking idea i have no fucking she smacks the table accidentally tipping a bowl of blueberry filling she looks at the goop and sticks her finger into it then her hand then smacks her hand into it goop splatters across the counter she laughs smacks it again laughs harder she lifts up her hand of purple red stickiness and smears some on her face and then her child walks in a daughter of six or seven or something faith oh hello child mommy faith yes child what are you doing faith um cleaning up want to help child no faith okay child tommy is crying faith okay is your father child he s out for looking for applesauce still faith o kay tommy will be fine until his father is done is there anything else you need the child stares between her and the counter child i don t want to go the farmer s market this weekend faith well that s what we do that s what good little girls and boys who live on farms do they do chores and help out their mommy and daddy when they re done with their schoolwork then they get to play when all the work is done child the work is never done faith child can i have a snack faith wordlessly produces some bowl of a perfect snack from seemingly nowhere faith sure maybe share with tommy while you re waiting for your father to find the applesauce the child takes it faith what do we say child thank you faith you re welcome child you re dirty the child leaves faith takes a lengthy moment to look after her faith when i was that age my parents were so so careful to tell me i could be whatever i wanted no matter what the big bad world told girls they saw i was smart and didn t want me put in a box every night they d tuck me in and say faith you can be whatever you put your mind to what happened where did i put my mind she puts the ice cream liquid into some comically antique looking contraption and starts cleaning up the counter faith i thought i could do it all he just seemed so nice so safe and i won t lie so rich and it s not like any other guys i had been seeing were anywhere near ready to commit so i said yes when he proposed then when i got pregnant i thought of all those famous actresses the nicole kidmans of the world who have their kid then lose the baby weight immediately and get back to work i could have done that i had taken two semesters of acting for the screen class i was the best in the class to no one s surprise do you hate me yet thin and blonde and my husband s handsome i hand mill our flour hand mill our flour from our own wheat because he hatched this idea to move out to the middle of nowhere now i m supposedly living the dream cooking and baking all day and nursing my baby all for approximately three hundred thousand of you stupid idiots on tiktok and counting soon to be four hundred thousand people thinking i ve got it made i didn t want this i wanted to be nicole kidman i thought i could come back from this how how do you come back from five kids no i m really asking you tell me how tell me how husband enters husband faith faith honey i m filming husband i heard you faith i said i m filming and you said you wouldn t interrupt anymore husband i really think you should take it easy with what happened to the last pregnancy faith that wasn t that had nothing to do with husband they say stress increases the chances of mis faith i know but i m not stressed husband not at all faith it s something else he takes this in and to his credit for this moment he really does look actually worried about her husband maybe if you just focused on you know faith the pie husband ha no but yeah sure how s the pie going anyway faith it ll be great husband of course it will you always provide he comes to her and touches her belly even when he s close it s not really intimate husband gotta keep baby number six happy remember why we re celebrating he starts to leave husband oh don t forget that uh that thing you were going to do today faith that thing husband yeah faith kill the cow with the knee issue husband y yeah the cow charlene it s more humane right faith right he leaves she s left alone for a moment slowly she finds the biggest knife she can in the kitchen she strokes it fondly gets an idea looks at the camera faith actually i think nicole kidman did surrogacy she heads out with the knife and a kitchen towel the work is never done the oven dings when she s gone end of play rebecca kane s writing has appeared in numerous theatres festivals and readings in new york
