er christmas about our plans to see them finally take place is very exciting i would say 50 of ian s time this last weekend he spent playing with my parents dog ziggy ian is his own little dog whisperer the dogs love him i can t wait until we can have our own dog we took this picture on easter did i mention how we re still working on our weight loss goals ian s lost over 60 pounds altogether and i ve lost 40 we still have a ways to go but it s been so fun to do it together although it s been hard it s totally been worth it and just as a final side note ian is now over 4 000 miles away from me across the ocean in a little place called london i wish i could have gone on the trip there were a lot of reasons i didn t go and now i m thinking they were all dumb reasons i knew 8 days without him would be hard but it s been a whole 24 hours and it s already far harder then i ever imagined i m excited for him that he gets to have this adventure with his dad i guess it s a reminder of how much i love this boy posted by melissa french at 7 16 am no comments monday march 4 2013 the running community on saturday i went on my first big run of the year ian and i have both signed up for races in april him a 5k and me a half marathon and i knew it was time to get serious about running again it was a gorgeous 50 degrees in salt lake and i set off on an 8 mile run i thought it would be extra hard since the farthest i d run all winter was 6 miles but i honestly couldn t stop smiling the whole run i love to run but even more then loving to run i realized around mile 5 how much i love the running community there were so many runners out on saturday and each one had the same look on their face the look of i m doing something hard and i m going to finish no matter what it takes i ve learned over the past 4 years or so of being a runner that 90 of the runners you run by will wave at you as you go by i ve learned that i will always be silently cheering for the runner going up the hill that i m coming down and i know a few miles later when i turn around that a different runner will be silently cheering me on as i m the one running up the hill i ve learned that runners don t come in sizes we are all different whether you are a little chubby or a lot chubby you can be a runner it also doesn t matter how fast you run i pass people and am passed by people each time i run yet it doesn t matter because we re all runners i love running but mostly i love the feeling that it brings joy and accomplishment so time for me to lace up my running shoes and get going again posted by melissa french at 6 49 am no comments thursday february 21 2013 3 simple stories last night i had to go through my first night of parent teacher conferences for this winter semester i always dread them i have never had a good experience with them or come away having learned anything until last night last night 3 different parents taught me 3 powerful little lessons that i can t stop thinking about parent 1 this mom came with 6 children in tow the oldest being 8 who is in my class she had all of these little kiddos with her yet she had a smile on her face and still stayed focused on her daughter in my class while looking around for all of her other 5 children i couldn t believe how she just kept smiling she really reminded me that you can smile and be happy in any situation and take advantage of the little moments parent 2 this dad came with his son to talk about how he was doing in school his son is very bright and very smart and is always asking questions his father spoke mainly spanish the conference was just a normal conference until the dad simply said thank you for sending home this homework with my son i do it with him and it is helping me with my english every day that to me is a great parent he helps his son every night with homework yet he is learning all at the same time to me this man is simply amazing parent 3 the last woman i can t help but think about came with her 3 children i m pretty sure all 3 children have different fathers and she told me she is pregnant with the fourth she is a very kind woman and has been more present in my classroom then any other parent this year which means she s stopped in about 3 times i had the great chance of telling her that her son was the top in my class in all subjects he is my kindest student and he is one that i have the most fun with on a daily basis she just started crying and couldn t stop hugging her son this woman who has been through who knows how many hardships in her life recognized the bright moment in her life in her son it was a powerful experience to witness so although i am dreading staying 3 hours longer one more night tonight i am also anticipating who may come what stories may i hear or experience tonight posted by melissa french at 7 00 am 3 comments friday february 15 2013 a day i used to hate i was single for what felt like a very long time i used to hate valentine s day i never got the point of it and i thought it was just a day to make those who were single feel bad about themselves and that s what i did most years i tried to make the most of it but secretly i loathed the day that all changed for me this year how fun is it to have someone in your life to celebrate such a fun day with especially someone you love so much you re spending eternity with them because of the simple knowledge that i wasn t alone on valentine s day and i was very loved i enjoyed the whole rest of my day i ve never had so much fun in my classroom we laughed and celebrated all day they always like to get ian in on the action it was so fun for me just to celebrate being happy and loving someone we turned it in to a very fun day i was most excited about the napkins i figured out how to fold or maybe it was the phillip phillips tickets ian surprised me with i will now probably be one of those people who look forward to valentine s day every year i hope for all of you single or married it was a fantastic day to remember who s important and to just be happy posted by melissa french at 11 05 am 2 comments thursday january 17 2013 a paperclip a socket and a great big spark when i decided to teach at farnsworth elementary in west valley utah ian tried to give me fair warning of the dynamics out in that area of the valley being from small town idaho falls everything just seemed really big and all the same to me even for a few months in to the school year wherever i went i felt like it was all just big city little did i know what i was getting myself into i have 26 students in my classroom and only 4 of them are white it has been an eye opening and life changing experience for me there have been days i went home sobbing knowing i couldn t ever have a harder group of kids and come to find out our grade level really does have some of the hardest kids to ever come through this school but for some reason the cap that was slightly sealed popped off yesterday in the third grade and all hell broke loose it was a day where you could laugh or you could cry and i m thankful all day i couldn t help but laugh here is a glimpse in to life as a teacher at a truly low income school my furnace broke in my room yesterday leaving all 27 of us huddled in our coats on the rug well most of us in coats several students don t have coats to wear luckily there was another empty classroom available so mid morning we grabbed our books and headed to this empty classroom and the chaos began victor names have been changed was hiding under the table playing with his trash pack toys jesus and angel are in the back whispering dirty words to each other in spanish brittney is humming a just bieber song at her desk and i am at the front trying to teach a simple writing lesson all morning i just couldn t wait until 11 45 when we had a slight break to normal for our library time i marched my students down to the library and sat at the back grading my papers when before i knew it i heard one student scream bloody murder what else could happen now 26 pairs of eyes turned on me pointing at timmy yes timmy my daily every second every minute every hour behavior student had stuck a paper clip in to the socket causing even the librarians eyes to bulge because the spark was so big so what do i do i march little timmy straight to the office which in mrs f s class that s a big deal because i never send kids to the office and who would be there but a police officer she had been there early for a student another third grader who escaped from the playground while in trouble from his teacher i waved goodbye to timmy at the office and watched as the policeman escorted him in to the principal s office and as i walked away i couldn t help but laugh funny enough it doesn t quite end there while leaving the office the social worker ran in to tell the principal that another third grade student exposed himself to his whole class at recess it took one look between my principal and i to just burst in to laughter really who knew at once school so much chaos could occur in one day i am grateful that on days when you can laugh or you can cry i chose to laugh yesterday and in fact i m pretty sure every time i see that electric socket in the library i don t think i ll be able to hold back my laughter i am a teacher it s what i do it s who i am and i m grateful there s always the stress reliever known as laughing to help me along the way posted by melissa french at 4 10 pm 1 comment monday december 31 2012 the best part about christmas i literally counted the days minutes and hours until i got to be in idaho falls for christmas for me it meant the longest time i ve ever been away from my family and i was definitely anxious and excited to get home there are so many possible options for what could have been the best part of my christmas it might have been the annual french family breakfast on christmas eve we go to perkins every year and enjoy hot chocolate french toast crepes and waffles it could have simply been sitting around with my family talking laughing and playing games i had missed doing that it definitely could have been going bowling on christmas eve and seeing my sister amber jump high in the air to do some mini splits after she got a strike it might have been christmas morning at my parents ian and i were there along with my sister jenny and my nephew jade it was so fun to see jade find what santa had left him and it was even more fun to see this kid play with his new toy there are 8 little things that could be my best part of christmas and that would be my nieces and nephews i have missed them the best part could even have been after we got home and using our new presents especially the new wii fit or spending all of yesterday with ian s family to celebrate his sister alie leaving on a mission next week we laughed so hard and were excited to show our love to her but when it comes down to it the best part of christmas for me was celebrating it with ian i have never been able to share christmas with anyone before and for me to share it with the person i love most in the world was pretty special i sure love mr falkner we definitely had lots of fun in idaho falls and are continuing to soak up every free minute we have the next two days christmas as a newlywed is definitely one i ll never forget posted by melissa french at 11 21 am 2 comments monday december 17 2012 i am if i were asked to describe myself i could do it in three simple statements i am a daughter of god i am a wife who loves her husband very much and i am a teacher i ve thought a lot about that third statement the past three days i was with my students on a field trip when i received the news of those 20 beautiful children and 6 adults who d never again walk through the doors of a school i cried all afternoon as i drove home from work and watched the news i couldn t help but place myself in their shoes i walked through my day step by step picturing someone unwillingly entering my classroom how would i react could i be as brave as those women who protected their students it left me feeling haunted and emotional all weekend as i drove to school this morning i felt scared i have never before felt unsafe going to school or work but this morning i wasn t so sure anymore am i safe as a teacher will today be a normal day or one full of terror but then this simple statement ran through my head be happy you can do it you re a teacher as my students walked in to my room i couldn t help but tear up their little smiling faces greeted me as they do every morning excited to go to school i am a teacher because i love these children and i am grateful and blessed to work with them every day i get to be with children every day who within 5 minutes of free time on their ipods discovere how to play the piano and drums at the same time to create fun new music i get to be with children every day who create beautiful art work and are excited to do the simplest of tasks and i get to be with children every day who show me love who send me letters even a year later and who make me cry each time i read those letters the tragedy in connecticut will continue to be on my mind over the next weeks i am sure and although it is heartbreaking and devastating i am grateful for the reminder that it gave me the reminder to be happy you can do it you re a teacher posted by melissa french at 4 59 pm 2 comments older posts home subscribe to posts atom my blog list run style run
