taken looking nw from raetihi 3 lenticular formations out over the 3 mountains ruapehu ngauruhoe and tongariro red sky in the morning shepherd s warning certainly true on this day 20mm of rain in the afternoon and evening ruggero domenichini the photograph of a capping cloud was taken from the grand chateu in mid afternoon on friday 15 july 2005 the clouds are clearing and mt ngaruhoe appears coated in candy floss wrote ruggero john mckillop john wrote i saw this interesting swirl of cloud on the western side of mt taranaki about 10 00 on 13 july 2005 kelsey grant i took this picture while flying from auckland to singapore recently it shows the australian desert with what looks to me like cumulus clouds in a wave like pattern i guess there is no large mountain range to trigger the wave and it must be a smaller scale thing such as the waves you see on the sand on the beach when the water rolls over it keep up the good work your site is a favourite with glider pilots wrote kelsey these are actually known as cloud streets kelsey and they form in the direction of the prevailing wind a very good description of cloud streets is given by scorer and verkaik in spacious skies published by david and charles 1989 streets are rows of cloud elements lined up roughly with the wind direction they require a fairly uniform depth of convection over a large area a common situation over the oceans or in this case the aussie outback such a bounded layer promotes an orderly arrangement of updrafts and downdrafts which can be more easily controlled by the prevailing flow clearly defined streets require a fairly dry usually anticyclonic air mass so that the updrafts upon reaching the stable layer do not merely spread as a stratocumulus sheet but are subjected to continual evapouration over land the streets are spaced about two to three times the thickness of the bounded layer and changes in spacing indicate changes in the layer s thickness while air rises within the streets there is weak subsidence between them which inhibits cloud development and maintains the pattern thanks to john robinson for providing some feedback on the above photo metvuw the satellite infra red image from the metvuw satellite archive shows huge cloud streets pouring off the coast of japan in the northern winter on 15 january 1995 intensely cold dry north westerly winds blow over the chinese mainland before forming huge cloud streets over the pacific ocean this image was extracted from a satellite movie made by james mcgregor and tim hume which shows one whole year of
