the trowbridge bunch skip to main skip to sidebar the trowbridge bunch mike and carol till the one day when the lady met this fellow and they knew that it was more than a hunch that these two would somehow form a family that s the way we all became the trowbridge bunch thursday august 22 2013 a sunday afternoon excursion a few sundays ago mike had to give someone a blessing at the hospital right after church he told ellie and i to go ahead and drive home and he d meet us back at the house when we got back to our apartment i realized that mike had used my house keys that morning and i assumed he still had them thus we were locked out of our apartment i tried calling him but he didn t answer there s a park right in front of the arizona state capitol which we live directly north of i d read about it being one of the 33 phoenix points of pride and had always wanted to visit it but never had so i carted ellie off to the wesley bolin memorial park while we waited for mike to come back with the keys luckily it was an overcast day only about 107 degrees which is pretty mild for the end of july in phoenix mind you ellie was excited that i was taking her to a park but a little disappointed when i told her it was a park without swings and a playground i can just imagine what was going on in her little head what the heck mom what kind of a park doesn t have swings but she had fun running around and i snapped pictures of anything and everything at the park the wesley bolin memorial park has several monuments dedicated to prominent arizonans and also to major wars and other significant events that have impacted the state a memorial for the bill of rights vietnam war memorial the ellie is cute memorial arizona law enforcement canine memorial wounded combat veterans memorial korean war memorial replica of a korean bell my favorite part of the park was the 9 11 memorial it s a large metal ring that you can walk underneath and it contains steel from the world trade center rubble from the pentagon crash and soil from the site of the 3rd crash in pennsylvania http en wikipedia org wiki file az_9 11_memorial_ _south_ _2009 12 08 jpg 9 11 memorial plaque steel from the wtc as you walk up to the memorial you can see that there are words inscribed in the top of the metal ring i thought how are short people supposed to read the words if it s inscribed on the top of the ring but then i looked down at the cement step underneath the ring and realized that the sun is supposed to shine down on the ring and the light casts the words onto the cement step below it it was really neat the ring documents a timeline of the events of september 11th the park also houses the mast and the anchor from the uss arizona one of the battleships sunk during the bombing of pearl harbor the controversial ten commandments memorial which the aclu tried to get removed in 2003 claiming it violated the concept of separation of church and state it turns out mike had left my keys in the car unbeknownst to me so we actually could have gotten into our apartment after church but i m glad we were forced to take this little excursion it felt like we were walking through a mini washington dc and relatives beware i ll probably drag you to this neat little park next time you come visit posted by carol t at 2 04 am no comments tuesday august 20 2013 caught the bug i did i caught the bug the family history bug so my dad and i were sitting around one night while we were up in utah and the topic of conversation was family history he showed me his fan chart which you can find at familysearch org and we got to talking about the higbee family i ve learned bits and pieces about my grandpa and his father but everything really came together that night and it was awesome so if you feel so inclined you can read further about some of my really neat ancestors really this is more for my documentation than anything else i won t be offended if you skip this post so my dad is scott higbee and his dad is arthur leon higbee who comes from elias higbee who comes from john mount higbee who comes from john somers higbee let s start with john somers higbee my great great great grandpa john somers higbee joined the church in ohio and crossed the plains with brigham young and then was asked by the prophet to settle fort utah which later became provo ut what my ancestors settled provo i d never heard of fort utah but we looked it up on google map there s a fort utah park with a replica of a fort and a nice plaque commemorating the settlement my memories of provo were a little rusty but looking at the map i recognized the location as being a quarter mile south of mike s grandparents s house how many times have i driven past this park and not realized the significance it holds for my family goodness the fort the plaque now john somers higbee had a brother named elias higbee he was a judge and he went with the prophet joseph smith to washington dc to help him submit a petition of redress to the us president martin van buren side note i live on van buren st elias higbee is also the same elias higbee found in d c 113 7 where he asks a question about isaiah and joseph smith answers it alright so john somers higbee had a son named john mount higbee my great great grandpa john mount higbee was a major in the 1857 iron county militia which was responsible for the awful events of the mountain meadows massacre http en wikipedia org wiki mountain_meadows_massacre he is said to have been the one to shout the command do your duty that started the killing he had a warrant out for his arrest but fled three years later he married his second wife eunice and had 8 children which included my great grandpa elias somers higbee john mount higbee was indicted in 1874 for murder and conspiracy but the charges were dropped and he died in cedar city ut my great grandpa elias summers higbee ended up moving to arizona going by the name elias summers due to the negativity surrounding his father and the higbee name while living in southern arizona he had my grandpa arthur leon higbee who grew up as arthur summers after elias higbee died his wife took the kids back up to cedar city ut and then eventually my grandpa met my grandma there and the rest is history so anyways i think that s all fascinating and that s only a small portion of the stories surrounding one tiny branch of my family tree my dad said every person on that fan chart has a story i can see why people get hooked on family history posted by carol t at 1 07 am 1 comment monday august 19 2013 utah part 2 our 2nd trip to utah might take a little longer to document we re talking 50 pictures here not for the faint of heart but in my defense our trip was almost a month long so really 50 pictures isn t bad first i should mention that mike s internship has been wonderful this summer his boss works remotely and is a total proponent of working at home so mike was able to accompany us to utah for a month ellie and i had a really great vacation while poor mike worked a lot our trip was a little longer than we intended because we went up early for mike s family reunion his mom s side gets together every year and this year it was up american fork canyon keeping cool in the river by our campsite cascade springs the most delicious dessert ever crafting with grandma kings we went to the farm at thanksgiving point with tiffany kingsley and kole ellie got to ride a pony side note she just saw this picture and said i said giddy up and she did while she was riding the pony their favorite part of the farm we also met an old co worker and friend for lunch with her two adorable kids her little one was having a birthday party we weren t able to make it but luckily we were able to get together for lunch instead it was fun catching up with emily and ellie sure enjoyed running around with emily s kiddos ellie took this picture it s actually a really good picture except my eyes are closed there was a lot of water activities worked into our trip this was a splash pad in alpine dave got us tickets to the orem owlz baseball game which was a lot of fun there was also a lot of this to help keep us cool elder nick trowbridge gave his farewell address he is headed to the san antonio texas mission we also got to go through the temple with him while we were up now he s in the mexico city mtc learning spanish and it s fun to get his emails don t mess with texas these tx themed desserts were made by the talented tiffany see you in 2 years notice the empty house mike s poor parents had quite the summer sending their youngest off on a mission and packing up their house and moving to virginia this is the day before they had to move out of their house and also the day of nick s farewell the ensuing festivities that followed family picture sans zeke s family i also was able to get together with a lot of good friends while up in ut this was a pool party in my parent s back yard enjoying otter pops to stave off the heat grandma grandpa sparkles as nicknamed by ellie we were with my family for the 4th of july we had a wonderful dinner and watched as all the neighbors set off not illegal anymore fireworks i love fireworks and i think ellie shares that love the see who can stick their hand in the ice cream maker the longest annual higbee competition ellie looks concerned ellie loved sparklers the next day we headed up to our family cabin in bear lake my favorite view in the entire world from our front windows overlooking bear lake tea party in the playhouse ellie as a care bear cute clara enjoying the beach i ve never seen the beach so crowded before we went to ideal beach and the parking lot was completely full and they were only admitting more people as others left crazy but we were able to find a nice little spot on the beach the lake was actually tolerable ellie enjoyed it so much she kept me in the lake as long as she could uncle punk came up we also went to a lewis clark museum in idaho the museum itself was pretty small but they had an awesome play ground next door which the girls took full advantage of grizzly ellie oh that smile one of the 5 full double rainbows i saw on this trip my mom took us to jungle jims and ellie had the time of her life it s a very reasonable price for kids and parents can even ride with the kids for free ellie s favorite ride bumper cars ellie looked terrified the entire time but wanted to ride it again after she got off another reason our trip was so long was because we stuck around to see zeke and his family they drove from california to visit for a week and then they headed off to japan for the next three years i m glad we got to see them before they left ellie loves her cousins especially miles since they re moving to japan my mom invited them over for a japanese dinner the food was amazing and we talked about japan all evening it was wonderful my all time favorite asian dessert that i haven t eaten since i was in korea oh man it was seriously delicious another beautiful picture of kakigori pat bing su i couldn t for the life of me figure out how to get this picture right side up stupid blogger i had like 4 more of them but maybe i ll post them when i can figure out what s going on also i never got a picture of hazel sorry hazel we still love you we also got to stay for caroline s baptism which was awesome kingsley helping ellie get a drink from the fountain ellie returning the favor we had such a great trip it was so fun spending a lot of time with family and friends i have to admit i was kind of dreading saying goodbye to utah and going back to phoenix hot and yucky phoenix as ellie likes to call it but on the drive home it rained for awhile and we saw the most beautiful double rainbow stretched out over the desert landscape it was like a little gift from heavenly father it was so beautiful and it made me realize that arizona isn t all that bad the desert is growing on me these pictures don t even begin to do it justice this is my favorite part of the drive and we rarely do it during the day it was extra beautiful with the double rainbow posted by carol t at 12 and i knew at that point our new family would be a hit although we may not have golden curls or bell bottoms we still have a lot of fun we were married in june of 2008 and our beautiful little ellie
