is the etymological fallacy if you re larping you re playing pretend derogatory in public in front of other people who aren t and didn t sign up to participate in your keyfabe as opposed to playing pretend in private with your friends if swinging a foam sword and pretending to be a knight errant on a quest was generally something you did in an abandoned field instead of being a new and like i don t want to come off like i m trying to argue you out of your own experiences i absolutely believe you that you ve dealt with people who did that but i do want to be clear that hearing this does feel like hearing someone say they hate golfers because of their common habit of hucking the clubs at you like javelins i don t think that s how you do it normally i think the people you knew who did this were very bad at this game in my experience the average larper absolutely does not want random passerby in their game and would not be trying to interact with them in any form and definitely would not be trying to stay in character if they did have to talk to them mordcore 19h so i m new to the larp scene medieval fantasy specifically which is that i will be talking about but from what i gather we absolutely do not hold larp events in public parks larp events are private so that randos don t stumble into them and break everyone s immersion always staying in character during the event isn t an annoying habit it s the whole point of everything that s why we play in fields forests castles or indoors in sets that match the setting we don t want random people walking in wearing modern clothes and interrupting the event for everyone staying in character the whole time takes effort and making the setting look just right which includes everybody being dressed in a way that fits creates a lot of immersion which helps a lot with the staying in character bit it s really an incredible experience of course the reason that larp is perceived as an inherently cringe hobby is the same reason hobbys that are common with autistic people nerds are seen as cringe are there larpers that are annoying and cross boundaries sure ppl like that exist everywhere in my country germany soccer is super popular and soccer fans are known to be annoying and cross boundaries yet its not treated with the same mockery and disgust good for them but also like this is obviously just because
