the moving vans the moving vans keep up with us as we move through life tuesday 27 september 2016 next stop wales after we got back from france we took a short trip to wales it seems kind of crazy to take two vacations within a period of two weeks but the time we have to travel here is really quite limited due to various reasons and we know that although we hope to be here for another three years that could always change we don t want to have a sudden departure and along with it a sense of regret that we put off going to places we always intended to go so we capitalized on the short british summer and headed west to snowdonia in northern wales it was only 3 5 hours away as you can see we had some great weather and lovely hikes this hike was on the first day and it was up the back side of the property we were staying at really lovely views there were tons of sheep up on these high hills too apparently they graze there for a good portion of the year before the headers chase them down to sheer them mr muscles hiking with natalie on his back we also saw some american and british fighter jets fly low through these valleys that was really cool at the summit of another hike adam has his hands on his ears because we were watching a british tornado fighter jet fly low below us it was pretty cool our kids were at a great age for these hikes because the boys are old enough to make it pretty far and natalie is still content enough and light enough to go on dave s back more views we went to barmouth beach one afternoon which was really nice the kids loved the beach and we had some good pizza and ice cream there too time to give everyone s calves a break and do an easier walk on the last day as you can see wales was beautiful and we were grateful to god for the good weather now back to the grind and another school year posted by david and kate at 09 58 no comments monday 19 september 2016 france better late than never this summer we had the opportunity to spend a week in the loire valley we drove from cambridge to folkestone where put our car on a train that went underneath the english channel we emerged in calais france where we drove five hours south west to the valley we rented a cottage for a week and enjoyed the countryside and the pool here are a few snapshots the chateaux at langeais sp a different view of the same chateaux above natalie looks over the sunflower fields by our cottage although they were past their prime the whole landscape was full of them and they were actually still very pretty altogether next is john with a white leopard i think at a biopark nearby it was a great zoo we loved the pool it was hot hot hot upper 90 s with no a c this is europe remember so we loved having a pool at our place i really miss outdoor swimming here so this was a huge hit for me and the kids our complex also had a game room complete with a grand piano john enjoyed playing a lot ping pong in the game room our cottage is on the left and the pool is just through the gate on the right my mom texted me and asked if we had had any good french food does this qualify i don t like to cook much on these trips and there were no kid friendly places nearby not too much fiber in the diet this week our host brought us a fresh loaf of bread every morning shopping in a local market dave s french skills were put to use many times i just smiled and pointed pretty views in the local towns ha i thought this was funny we had to get a bag of course cheers posted by david and kate at 08 49 1 comment saturday 6 august 2016 summer is here happy summer holidays the boys finished school on july 21st and we have been busy ever since here are some pics from the beginning of july onwards we went to ickworth house right near where we used to live in bury st edmunds it is a lovely estate but watch out for all the sheep poop everywhere in the fields my parents stopped by here in mid july for a week we had lovely weather right before a heat wave so we enjoyed some time with them we took my parents out to dinner to celebrate their anniversary and my dad s birthday both in the spring it was perfect weather we enjoyed a morning at the botanical gardens but it was a bit hot after my parents left we took a day trip in to london we hadn t been there in a long time so it was nice to go in even if it was just for the day dave s parents got us tickets to the london aquarium so we enjoyed that then we took the famous walk to buckingham palace along with about 50 million other people we pushed through the crowd at my insistence to get a picture in front of the palace we can t have lived here almost 2 years and not been there i didn t get any real good pictures from the day but what matters is that we had a great time good attitudes 2016 on the other side well here we are on the other side of june 23rd the brexit vote leading up to it i am pretty sure 90 of the county thought that the remain side would win but two weeks ago we woke up to a very different outcome as the day got underway the ramifications of the referendum began in earnest the prime minister resigned the labour leader is holding on but something like 20 of his shadow cabinet members resigned if we compared it to the us can you imagine the president and 20 members of congress resigning in one day then you have the feelings of the ordinary britons our neighbor who just sold her house but it is under contract was very upset wondering if the sale would go through we have since heard that may sales have been canceled in the area a swedish woman in our village felt like the outcome of the election was a vote against all the foreign eu citizens who are in the uk several people from northern ireland are applying for irish passports the republic of ireland is in the eu so they won t have trouble when they travel after the uk leaves the eu very interesting times and yet we know many people who voted for leave not because they dislike migrants but they dislike the eu leadership and the way it controls the countries that are in it i read that something like 50 of the laws in the uk come from the eu government not the uk government the eu laws are very far reaching it will be interesting to see how everything transpires on a lighter note the boys are enjoying the euros european championship soccer tournament natalie shows her support for the very disappointing english team a new dress from grandma smelling all the roses at the rose garden in anglesey abbey notice the fleece hoodie she is wearing that is the kind of summer we are having dave is laughing because natalie didn t want her picture taken with him she wanted it taken with just the flowers on a walk in hatfield forest in essex very close to stansted airport this pic is before we got lost it used to be an old hunting forest for various kings and noblemen the cows on the way out of the forest they didn t want to move not even after we honked dave had to get out and drive them away they i am not sure who they is release cattle all over england in the summer to chew the grass and keep it short watch out for the poop our weather this is as warm as i like it here because any hotter and you start to feel uncomfortable in your house since there is no a c it has been quite hot in the gym these days as they don t have central a c in there i do miss wearing tank 2016 another month gone we are just past the summer solstice and the days are loooonnng sunset at 9 25 so it isn t dark until well after 10 and sunrise at 4 38 so the birds begin chirping just after 3 30 we are enjoying all the daylight to play but i do have to sleep with an eye mask as the sun totally wakes me up the boys still have four and a half more weeks of school left i don t mind at all i like this year round school schedule dave has had to work some crazy hours so i have been trying to be a good cruise director and take the kids on some fun outings over the may half term we went to sutton hoo on the suffolk coast an old anglo saxon burial ground it had some lovely walks and a fun museum for the kids john studied the anglo saxons so he was very keen to go in the museum natalie dressed as an anglo saxon girl and john as a warrior king checking herself out out at the burial mounds where they found all the relics the archaeologists found ships and very elaborate burials of warriors and a king one of the hikes around sutton hoo we took natalie on a hike around wimpole estate a national trust property not far from our house it was a beautiful summer day at the folly on wimple estate we thought it was a church but really it was just an architectural feature designed to give the estate owners something interesting to view from their stately house off to another national trust property yes we are making good use of our membership called wicken fen it helps you to see what this land was like before they drained all the water from the fields interesting but very buggy this time of year i found a bunch of peonies from a local nursery for only 2 pounds natalie loved to smell them we went strawberry picking up by peterborough this weekend john complained that he didn t want to go but once we got there he was so in to it i wish this was my job he said it was fun but not exactly cheap the farm used mannequins as scarecrows natalie was sufficiently scared of them you can see the mannequin next to adam in the picture above and below to the right of natalie well tomorrow is a big day in the uk should they stay or should they go my bet is that they
