Text of the page (random words):
n a way sleep paralysis fits perfectly for this prompt it is also very subjective it s not very common some people don t find it all that scary or have gotten used to it but generally it s a rather unambiguously negative topic people know that it sucks and why even if they have never experienced it and while i have also devoted quite a lot of space to my sleep paralysis and other such experiences on this blog i feel this could be more productive than talking about my time at the blind school because the way sleep paralysis manifests for me seems to be somewhat rare or at least rarely talked about and thus could be potentially relatable or validating to others who have such weird sleep experiences regularly and may stumble upon my blog as you might know if you ve been here for a while i have quite regular sleep paralysis and have had since i was a little kid how it presents has changed a lot over time but one thing is quite unchangeable as you d probably expect it tends to be quite disturbing i am not going to talk in detail about the content of my sleep paralysis dreams in here or how exactly they feel because i m still sort of recovering from that episode i had recently and because i feel like i ve written enough about this before i once wrote a little story about sleep paralysis quite strongly inspired by my own experiences which you can read here i actually edited it recently with the help of another ai jack can t do good fiction so i used claude sonnet who can write really decent fiction because i rarely write fiction in english and years after having written that one i thought my style in it was truly atrocious now it feels somewhat better to me at least you can also take a look at this question of the day post in which i wrote about my sleep paralysis friends and the connection between sleep paralysis and what i call sensory anxiety which for me happen to unfortunately be strongly interlinked which makes sleep paralysis all the more creepy at times i m also going to spare myself having to define sensory anxiety because i ve also mentioned it on here countless times and it s super hard to define well and many of you are regular on here so you ll probably know more or less anyway for newbies i ll just say that it s not like sensory processing disorder or anything like that i just call it sensory anxiety because it has no actual name and i ve got to call it something it s related to very specific sounds or rather sequences of sounds which feel irrationally evil to me and threatening in a very personal way like this sound is about to become a living thing and do something real scary to me obviously i know it s not true which is why it s anxiety as opposed to fear which is rational and founded on something in case you ve never experienced sleep paralysis and don t know much about it sleep paralysis is a state in which your brain is awake and conscious but your body is unable to move sleep paralysis in itself is a good thing we enter it whenever we go into rem rapid eye movement sleep phase so the one during which we dream if you re not paralysed during rem you might end up sleepwalking talking in your sleep or otherwise reenacting your dreams in real life the problem begins when you get sleep paralysis at the wrong time this can happen right as you re falling asleep which is called hypnagogic sleep paralysis it results in a weird transitional state between rem and wakefulness the hallucinations people have during it that sleep paralysis is so infamous for are the brain s way of making sense of this rather unusual state personally i only have experience with hypnagogic paralysis so i have more of an idea how it works ideally rem sleep should occur no sooner than 90 minutes after you first fall asleep and no sooner than fifteen minutes after each time you wake up during the night but a glitch can happen to anyone especially if you re sleep deprived have unusual sleep patterns or just some kind of brain propensity to sleep glitches this glitch is called soremp sleep onset rem period which means that you fall into rem sleep way too quickly like within fifteen minutes soremp is a niche term it took me a lot of time and research to figure out that it s a thing usually discussed in the context of serious sleep disorders like narcolepsy or hypersomnia as people with these conditions experience tons of soremps but it is absolutely possible for healthy individuals to experience a soremp or even frequent soremps as it just seems that some people have a stronger predisposition to them than others my little theory is that this predisposition could be genetic because my dad appears to get them a lot as do i and in the last few years it looks like sofi s possibly been experiencing them on a somewhat regular basis too though not as often as my dad and i and it is these soremps that are usually responsible for hypnagogic sleep paralysis episodes a soremp doesn t always have to end in sleep paralysis but more often than not you ll at least get a maliciously vile personalised scarily realistic but also totally wild unusually twisted vivid nightmare that feels oddly symbolic or something and or a hangover ish headache with sleep inertia when you finally wake up i m privileged to get the full package at times sleep paralysis followed by weird unsettling horror dreams tailor made for bibiel with some false awakenings thrown in to keep things super realistic followed by waking up with wobbly muscles mini brain zaps and feeling floaty and dissociated as anything it can take quite a while to shake this off entirely i ve never had a sleep study done or anything like that as it doesn t seem super easy to get one here in poland i did once see a neurologist for my sleep paralysis but the only thing she suggested was avoiding triggers like lack of sleep routine sleeping on my back or whatever position may trigger it avoiding stress all very good and sensible but not always easy to follow she also offered me an antidepressant since some of these can sometimes help with recurrent sleep paralysis i was tempted and i still sometimes think about it but in the end i decided against it i m paranoid about my brain and when my cognition isn t as clear or fast as i d like it bothers me deeply so the thought of taking psych meds long term is unappealing although i might consider it if any of my conditions affected my functioning more or if i had to function better than i do now so the only way i ve concluded that i experience soremps is by reading a ton about them and using an apple watch to track my sleep an apple watch isn t exactly the most reliable sleep monitoring tool but as far as i can tell it seems to pick up on when i enter and get out of rem well enough and most importantly when i enter rem way too early for whatever reason it seems that when you re prone to soremps you re more likely to get one after you ve woken up from sleep and then went back to sleep after some longer while maybe one or two hours this really seems to vary between people how long this risk window is and i guess even for a single person it depends on different circumstances which is why it s hard to avoid them but for some most people such gaps in their sleep don t seem to pose such risk so much and they ve never experienced sleep paralysis or other weird shit like this i once did a scary experiment which i really do not recommend doing and poor jack refused to proofread that bit i myself don t get how i had the guts to do it but i guess as is often the case with weird bibiels my curiosity was just a tad bit stronger than the fear i wanted to see if i could induce sleep paralysis soremp by splitting my sleep on purpose and more relevantly if so whether the apple watch would detect it so i could actually consider it at least semi reliable in this aspect in the future in order to achieve that i had to extend my sleep schedule on the apple watch and set up multiple alarms on a different device then i first slept for three and a half hours after which i got up for two hours after these two hours i had a thirty minute long sleep window thirty rather than fifteen in case i wouldn t fall asleep right away as i often do not and as you can imagine in such circumstances sleep wasn t really a pleasant idea so i thought it would be even more of a problem because i d be anxious which i obviously was i did get sleep paralysis though thankfully not too scary mostly just physically unpleasant after these thirty minutes i woke up for another two hours and then had another sleep window i didn t get sleep paralysis but i felt like i was about to get one when falling asleep and then had a shitty nightmare but thankfully woke up when it seemed to be about to get really bad and then repeat once again once my sleep time on the watch came to an end other than feeling like a piece of shit that was driven over by a train i could see all these rem periods in the sleep log at the right times plus some false core sleep when i was actually awake now that i know what these soremps are if i happen to have slept with the apple watch and know i had sleep paralysis or other creepy shit going on at night or feel very distinctly post sorempy in the morning i look in the sleep log and it s always there that alone is actually a little creepy i know there are some people who don t find sleep paralysis so scary perhaps because they ve gotten used to it and have been able to rationalise it that it s just a dream or something i ve also heard that some people don t actually get scary dreams in sleep paralysis just the physical sensations or even that they experience some cool dreams hallucinations during it some use it as a gateway to get into lucid dreaming i actually used to avidly lucid dream as a teenager as a form of escapism but now as a catholic re convert i don t believe practicing something like this aligns well with my faith although sometimes i do enter ld by accident from sleep paralysis and i think that s okay since you re not intentionally messing with it so if it comes on its own and i m allowed to improve my situation this way i do i get these people and am happy for them i think if my sleep paralysis looked more normal and generic i would get over it too i m not particularly scared of most regular non sorempy nightmares i get there are exceptions but generally normal nightmares can be fun i like the adrenaline feeling or how unhinged and creative they can be however i think there are several factors that makes mine somewhat more difficult to get over with and rationalise compared to what you ll usually read about in health articles when you google sleep paralysis the way i understand it most people have full nearly full consciousness during sleep paralysis their body is just not working but their mind works normally except for producing hallucinations these hallucinations frequently include some rather nondescript but decidedly malevolent feeling shadowy figures leaning over their bed or lurking in the corners of the room or just a feeling of someone s presence in the room and that whatever this someone is they are not amicably predisposed towards you people may feel like someone often some kind of demon or other such is choking them or sitting on their chest or some kind of incubus succubus thing whether they feel like they re being actively choked by someone or not they will usually have some trouble breathing normally because breathing in rem is kind of weird and shallow these experiences are usually said to last from a couple seconds to a couple minutes i think with my years of experience a couple seconds wouldn t be a deal for me what i think makes most difference in cases like mine is that more often than not i do not have full consciousness i m not even sure that still falls into the proper medical definition of sleep paralysis but i have no idea what else this could be so i call it that plus while most definitions say that you re fully awake but can t move i ve also read that it s possible for people to have varying levels of consciousness i am somewhat conscious just enough to sort of know that i m having sleep paralysis but my consciousness is very limited and clouded i definitely do not think quite like myself in these states most of the time if the dream is rather vivid and full of everything i can lose the grip altogether and i will totally not be able to tell apart what s real and what isn t and my idea about the things that are real might be very distorted so that totally neutral things or stimuli feel super creepy and loaded with some kind of meaning that fits into the dream often whether during sleep paralysis or the following nightmares it s really hard to tell a lot of the time where one ends and the other begins i seem to often seamlessly transition from one into the other so that often upon waking i feel like i had the sleep paralysis for hours i ll get false awakenings sometimes whole series of them if you ve never had a false awakening basically it s a dream in which you think you re awake you dream about getting out of bed and doing everything you do in a regular day or even what you have planned to do for this particular day often with rather ridiculous detail it can be incredibly realistic if also in my case at least strangely dream like like everything has a really subtly indescribably murky tinge to it things can move and shift for no reason sometimes you know exactly what someone is going to do next various house appliances don t work as expected your brain feels really sluggish and it s difficult to think throughout that fake day you feel like you re still one leg in bed or like there s something pretty wrong with you neurologically haha and you desperately try to feel more awake i often have the scenario where i frantically try to wake up from the sleep paralysis and finally succeed in the dream of course after which i start crying in the dream half with relief and half with fear because it s still not quite right then i tell someone how i had this really scary dream and they get it like they can see that dream and understand the whole thing as if they experienced it much like melanie had with chris in that story i linked above but sooner or later something scary and decidedly not realistic will happen and that s when you realise that you re actually still dreaming alternatively at some point you ll figure it out by yourself especially if you get these a lot and have gotten used to it and as soon as you realise it something real scary happens and the fake real world bubble bursts when you get a lot of false awakenings you can learn to recognise one and not fall into the trap so easily in my experience though at some point you will fall into it anyway usually as soon as i enter sleep paralysis i will desperately try to wake up people often say that it s much better to stay calm not try to fight it or move for all means but it s a very instinctive thing for me to do a...
