sunset hey people i woke up to this song yesterday and i thought i d write a post about it it s definitely one of my favourite songs on sywel nyw s debut album deuddeg twelve maybe even the single favourite one i happen to have amazing memories with it too which certainly contributes to how i feel about it sywel nyw has already been featured on my inner mishmash a couple of times and i really enjoy his music in general but in case you re not familiar with him sywel nyw is the alias of london based welsh musician lewys wyn who is a producer dj composer singer songwriter and multi instrumentalist and whose musical career started in the welsh indie group yr eira as sywel nyw he first wrote more alt pop electropop type stuff like this song you ll hear today but now makes these house disco tracks that make you or at least me feel happy with lots of really cool textures and samples which you ll hear more prominently on his latest album hapusrwydd yw bywyd life is happiness or in this bibiel hears things post which features his song disglair bright from that album his debut lp that today s song comes from deuddeg is named so because it contains twelve songs which were released as singles every month for one year preceding its release in january 2022 and each of these singles was recorded in collaboration with a different welsh artist i ve featured two of these collaborative singles with endaf emlyn and mr mark roberts this one is different though because as the last of the twelve it features only lewys himself as mentioned in the post title machlud means sunset and lewys told y selar magazine that he sees it as symbolic of any period or chapter in life that is closing including the project itself he has also said that he intended for this song to be rather simple pop y and commercial ngl i totally wouldn t mind if all the pop y commercial stuff in the world was like this we d be in a good place culturally he mentioned in that article that one influence on the track was frank ocean and gosh this is real i d never have thought of that because i don t hear frank ocean s music nearly often enough to make the connection spontaneously but yes now that i know that this was the intention i can hear it quite a lot it has this very sensory but simultaneously kind of hazy feel that makes you feel like you re in a dream but at the same time it s an ultra realistic high resolution one haha sort of like false awakening but cooler and not mundane and creepy as false awakenings are in my experience i ve tried to translate this thing because i thought i might manage it but the deeper i waded into it the more ambiguities there were so especially considering that it s not supposed to be a super deep song which you can t enjoy without understanding it i decided to feature it without a translation the socionics section not much to say this time because i ve already typed lewys as an lsi earlier here but thought i could add that in talanov s approach i m pretty sure he would have some sort of accent and not be a standard lsi i ve always been a little sceptical of this typing of mine because lewys is literally the only lsi musician i ve typed so far i don t think your average lsi is particularly artistic i ve noticed his lyrics have a lot of very subtle ni so maybe he d have some beta nf eie or iei accent probably iei then cause eies don t typically create much happy stuff gosh i d never heard of an lsi with an iei accent i d like to see what one looks like whether or not he is that o he definitely sounds rather decisive central as one would expect from lsi ish individuals lsis are not peripheral hobbits haha and i think that while lewys s brother griff lynch likes fi lewys seems like he likes fe which is also consistent with lsi in the classic model a lsis have fe as their suggestive function i e they suck at it but enjoy getting it from others if he d be an lsi with a beta nf accent though that would make his own fe better than the pure lsi s i do have to investigate more someday whether he really is an lsi in the first place or whether it s just a strong first impression i got and stuck with it musician and producer lewys wyn who was previously the frontman of a successful indie band yr eira as sywel nyw he likes to collaborate with all sorts of other musicians who write their songs in welsh and that s what the album deuddeg was all about the idea behind it was that throughout 2021 he released a new single each month with a different artist from the welsh language music scene and then in 2022 these twelve singles were released as an album i ve already shared one of them traeth y bore morning beach produced in collaboration with quite legendary welsh musician endaf emlyn and that song was written by one of my faza peeps griff lynch who is lewys s brother since deuddeg however lewys has released another album hapusrwydd yw bywyd life is happiness which i highly recommend because it s great it s as uplifting as its title suggests and i ve also shared one song from it disglair bright featuring poet carwyn eckley this song created in collaboration with mark roberts aka mr was the first single that sywel nyw released in 2021 i really like how it sounds overall it has this very distinct dreamy feel that s so prevalent in sywel nyw s music and that s really characteristic of his work this one also has quite a 90s vibe it s also great lyrically which is hardly surprising as mark roberts has a longstanding reputation for being a talented songwriter he has been a very influential musician on the welsh music scene most notably as a member of the 80s punk band y cyrff and then songwriter and guitarist in catatonia mark has been quoted as saying about this song when i heard the synths and the drum machine playing the dreamy patterns that lewys had recorded i knew what i wanted to do i felt the chords sounded nostalgic but in a fairly mechanical way so i decided to write about something human the romance of love and loss and surprise of surprises i even managed to translate it with the help of my two assistants jacks you can find the bibiel translation at the end of this post right above the video though a disclaimer as always i am neither an english nor welsh native speaker and it s very possible that it has some things that could be translated better or straight up errors so always take bibiel translations with a grain of salt they re just meant to give you a general idea of what a song is about also i wouldn t be myself if i didn t mention that the video for this song showcasing a day in the life of a lovelorn teddy bear not that i can verify it myself being blind was directed and edited by the aforementioned griff lynch and like all sywel nyw s music it came out on griff s label lwcus t the socionics section i don t have any massive evidence for that really certainly not as strong as in the case of griff or casi wyn griff and lewys s sister who s a musician and poet but i feel reasonably certain that lewys is an lsi i once listened to a podcast episode featuring him and in a lot of subtle ways he kinda reminded me of my brother who is an lsi which was the first time i tentatively typed lewys as such nothing that i ve learned about him since then seems to contradict that typing i think he is central and ascending as opposed to griff an esi who as such is descending and he does seem logical rather than ethical to me and also positivist the latter is interesting because most lsis actually do not look all that positivist even though theoretically they are as a type and i think he has se creative and ni mobilising like griff as lsis and esis share these functions his ni mobilising in particular likes to come out in his lyrics a lot as far as i can tell most of all though he just seems to vibe a whole lot like an lsi haha and to me that s more convincing than anything ohh yeah and he s also lvfe in psychosophy or so i think of welsh london based musician lewys wyn whose music i ve already featured here before both as sywel nyw specifically his song traeth y bore a collaboration with endaf emlyn and in several songs by his indie rock group yr eira this particular song is a collaboration with carwyn eckley a young poet from pen y groes in dyffryn nantlle north wales last august carwyn won the chair at the national eisteddfod for his collection of poems exploring the loss of his father during his childhood for those of you unfamiliar with welsh culture the eisteddfod is an annual festival celebrating welsh art literature music and more one of its highlights is the prestigious poetry competition in a traditional form known as cynghanedd a highly structured form of welsh poetry that uses intricate patterns of sound the winner is honoured with a bardic chair designed especially for that year s festival this isn t the first collaboration between the two artists they ve known each other for a few years and carwyn has written lyrics for lewys s band yr eira before as lewys told nation cymru this song captures the essence of a relationship whether between friends or companions by romanticising those
