ne that doesn t have an active streaming service it s basically my tv right now and while i might start my day watching videos that both entertain and inform me what the algorithms want is to keep me engaged at all costs so i might start with watching a video explaining the day s news this is frequently frustrating but also completes the tasks of keeping me an informed citizen and voter very important in maine right now from this youtube might recommend another video about current events but this one is less about keeping me informed and solely about hacking into that frustration for views and then another video and another video along the same vein you can see where problems might arrive i hear a lot of people say these days that smart phones are bad for you and as a directionally challenged individual who is so glad for the maps app i very much disagree i can even see plenty of benefits in using things like social media and youtube however i think the way that the majority of us use our phones isn t great for me it was just making me unhappy and i ve decided to respond by slowly cutting back on my phone time not sure where that will take me yet but i ve seen great progress so far neither journaling nor cutting back on screen time are magical cures i haven t seen giant pockets of time open up because i m no longer spending a few minutes here and there scrolling but both have been a great way to get my brain more prepared for the important stuff and that includes writing what i ve been working on as i mentioned in last month s entry i have been working on beta read a book for a friend of mine early in july i managed to complete and submit my notes this made me really excited firstly because apparently my feedback was helpful and secondly because it freed up time in my schedule to write something a little more horrirific the nightmare house is a side project that i ve picked up and put down from time to time it s a haunted house book but it s also so much more a story about a woman who finds her life in a bad spot she is determined not to become a parasite on her family but in doing so she finds herself lying to the person she cares the most about i ve really enjoyed blending both the creepy horror elements as well as the inner struggles related to the fact that life sometimes requires us to lean on others and the consequences of that not quite sure how much longer this draft is going to take but the plan is to continue to work on it throughout august we re still a long way from publication on this one what s aged protagonist and i wanted to bring some of my experiences as a person has reached 40 samuel is in a lot of ways a character who has been through a lot when the story opens he has been working for a church as a wraithkeeper think warrior priest who protects innocents from wayward spirts for twenty years he is good at his job and respected by his peers he has already created his found family the into one story and i also knew that i wanted to get the worldbuilding right so for my first time as a writer i decided to start not by plotting out the story or building characters but by building the world around them this wasn t because i wanted to deliver a dense lengthy fantasy book with lots of infodumps wraithkeeper is a slim volume by fantasy standards this was less about overwhelming up i m going to be talking about how my june went and maybe even add a few titles to your summer reading tbr what i ve been doing summer means summer reading as someone who s been eager for some literary distraction i ve found a variety of really interesting things to read over the past several weeks and thought i d recommend a few of my favorites this includes recommendation if you re in the mood for horror nonfiction and the book that pretty much everyone is reading right now first off is a title that got me a little more in touch with my irish heritage this house will feed by maria tureaud is a great example of a horror novel where the history is so terrifying that it can be difficult to tell where the real life elements end and the speculative begins taking place during the irish potato famine the novel focuses on maggie a resourceful irish woman who accepts a deal to impersonate a rich woman s daughter in order to secure her future doing so requires her to travel to grand and remote manor maggie quickly learns that a terrible power exists within the walls of her new house a power that will pull out the darkest memories of her past growing up in the united states the irish potato famine was referenced as the impetus for so many families settling in the us including my own but the specific details of said famine and the terrible system that irish people were forced to live under is not something really covered in schools i m glad that i picked up a book that really delved into it in addition maggie is a great fit for anyone looking for a morally complex character while i had some issues with the ending i m would still recommend it for gothic horror fans speaking of horror i ve been catching up on my junji ito as well my favorite of his recent releases here in the us is moan a short fiction collection that is weird in all of the ways we expect out of ito the story that the collection gets its name from moan is definitely worth checking out the subject matter is a germophobic woman and her two daughters who find their lives turned upside down when they realize that something is wrong with the pipes in their home fans of body horror will not want to miss flesh colored mystery which has an absolutely crazy resolution but my favorite would have to be blood orb grove there are so many takes on vampires out in the literary world so it s really exciting but not that surprising to see that ito s take is entirely his own if you re looking for a more social media driven fiction then you re going to want to check out yesteryear by caro claire burke of course given that it is the book of the summer you probably already have yesteryear is at its very core a book about faking it natalie presents herself to the world as the perfect traditional woman spending her days raising her many children gazing lovingly at her husband and working on her ranch but what her followers don t know is that the children are raised by nannies she and her husband basically hate each other and her content is the result of a brilliant young producer but reality comes crashing down when natalie finds herself waking up in what looks an awful lot like the time that her content idolizes yesteryear reminds me rf kunag s yellowface in that reading it is like watching a car crash the results may be horrific but you just can t look away while meredith has genuine struggles in her past she always learns the wrong lessons from them while i did feel sorry for her in the beginning the further i got into the book the more the chaos surrounding her began to look like trouble of her own making the ending has been rightfully controversial and while it s not how i would have decided to end it i do feel like it really suits the overall book it s kinda nice when the book that everyone is talking about is actually really solid finally i want to end the book i m reading right now marilyn and her books the literary life of marilyn monroe by gail crowther which examines hollywood actress marilyn monroe s relationship with books what starts off as a simple examination of the books on her shelves eventually develops into an interesting conversation about who is allowed to be seen as intelligent and be taken seriously this book has been criticized for stretching its premise a little thin as well as the fact that in its efforts to display marilyn as more than a dumb blonde the results can feel overly simplistic in other ways in all honestly those are fair criticisms from what i ve seen read still i do think it succeeds in its quest of presenting another way to examine such a famous woman i m enjoying this one what i ve been working on more reading strangely enough i ve been beta reading an upcoming novel for a friend and as it s a little on the long side it s taken a little more time than expected i ve been doing the best to balance it with promotional material for wraithkeeper which includes the blog posts you see her the posts that have shown up on my instagram and my monthly newsletter and while all this is very exciting i m really looking forward to getting back to some actual writing maybe next month what s next i will be spending july finishing up those beta reads getting ready for wraithkeeper s launch and turning 41 that s right i have a birthday just around the corner 40 has certainly been a year of always enjoyed books with darker elements garth nix s old kingdom trilogy remains a personal favorite to this day it wasn t until the pandemic that i found myself drawn to horror fiction more and more maybe it just made sense that with all of the darkness going on in the world i wanted to find a safe place to explore that years later with the pandemic thankfully behind us it seemed like a good time unwilling victims and the few individuals who fight against them the novel focuses on samuel a wraithkeeper for the church who has put twenty years into protecting others but what will he do his
