ever photographed someone who wasn t ready for his closeup we like to call these candids but the subject isn t always thrilled with the final result i ve heard the words delete that right now as my iphone is swiftly snatched from my hands even friends who are beautiful and photogenic wish to be ready for the snap and captured in the best lighting photo credit unsplash com swarajtiwari the word candid means truthful and straightforward most of us would agree that s how we want our interactions to feel genuine unabashed real but what about in conflict do we truly desire honesty sans filter this type of conflict sounds harsh unhelpful and perhaps even damaging to relationship still i believe it s possible to have candid conflict well here are four questions i ask myself when i lean into conflict continue reading what photography has taught me about conflict are you ready on december 20 2016 december 19 2016 by nathan a claycomb in faith personal growth leave a comment we are only 5 days away from christmas five days and there is one phrase that is becoming more and more prevalent each day are you ready for christmas a friend asked me this question as we were leaving work the other day i in turn asked a colleague today she replied oh yes we re ready what does it mean to be ready for christmas i typically respond that we ve bought all our presents and mailed most of the cards already we decorated the tree hung the lights and baked the cookies i m even sipping hot winter tea from a charlie brown christmas mug right now but to be honest i m not ready for christmas see i ve been fighting planter fasciitis for over eight weeks the pain has been severe at times unless you ve had it you don t know it last week i injured my right knee in a ping pong accident laugh it up you didn t know ping pong was a full contact sport did you finally i woke up yesterday with a sinus cold ugh five days then there are the kids our two boys have been misbehaving in the most random ways recently i blame the elf on the shelf i think they are showing off for him some mornings we can t get through breakfast without a wwe match sunday was also one of our christmas family gatherings i have to admit i was not ready i did not want to go yet when the time came for us to leave the house i took a bunch of medicine for the knee foot and head sounds like a new disease and we headed out for the party within 15 minutes of arriving i was so glad i went i forgot about the pain and enjoyed our family time my most recent holiday troubles are not very major i know but they are troublesome enough to have caused a mood shift at the same time there are a few folks in my life who are struggling as they get ready for christmas this year they ve experienced job loss pet death and hospitalization these are physically exhausting and emotionally weighing issues that can prevent us from being ready for christmas sure the gifts may be bought the house decorated the cookies baked but our hearts our hearts aren t ready have you ever felt that way i was there with you until yesterday when i got that first warm hug but here s the thing over 2000 years ago mary wasn t ready either i doubt joseph was ready the innkeeper certainly wasn t ready nor were the shepherds or king herod but god was ready his perfect son was too he came into the world as a baby boy when no one was ready here s the best part i don t need to be ready you don t need to be ready either god didn t send christ into the world as a baby when we were ready we would never be ready to receive such a gift so in five days we celebrate christmas whether your ready or not the good news he s ready for you merry christmas like what you ve read today sign up to receive future posts and like us on facebook are you conversation once there was this goat when humor isn t funny on april 26 2016 april 28 2016 by nathan a claycomb in communication personal growth relationships 1 comment i grew up in a household of laughter story telling and jokes brought a tremendous amount of joy nearly every holiday our extended family would gather together and share stories from years past the jokes were often clean yet sometimes a little off color subjects would ebb and flow and there were several moments when laughs would come at someone s expense these jabs were typically exchanged between my dad and his brother as i grew older i could retell the family stories with great accuracy after hearing them so many times and as if i was being initiated into adulthood i became the punchline to my older cousins jokes the banter included my dating life facial hair or lack thereof and my inability to get a buck during deer season my uncle and dad participated in the playful teasing there were moments when the jokes stung a little but i learned how to take it and how to give it right back this dishing it out ability has blossomed over the years into a natural off the cuff humor that keeps an audience laughing be it five or 55 people i use humor to connect and entertain however as a colleague of mine says every strength has it s shadow a recent moment of humor cast a shadow over a first impression continue success 1 comment this week i took a staycation a practice becoming more popular with each passing year the concept is simple take time off from your paid career to stay at home and or fill your time with recreation near to home for instance i live in amish country so i may take in attractions like the amish farm house or kitchen kettle village perhaps our family will journey to turkey hill experience and make our own ice cream some staycations like mine include a list of home projects to complete no matter how long the staycation or how it is spent one thing is certain we all need one
