band wednesday 8 i ve got a gal in kalamazoo glenn miller orchestra hope all is well with you folks out there whom ever you may be this week we have a perky little tune from the glenn miller orchestra i ve got a gal in kalamazoo one of several tunes centered around a specific locale that the gmo did this one is purt near impossible not to sing along to i had someone call in at work not that long ago from you guessed it kalamazoo michigan it was all i could do not to break out in this song heh heh looks like work is clearing out so hopefully will be able to get g ology rolling soon as well as some other posts on here until then y all have a nice week hu posted by vkmfanhuey at 9 59 pm no comments email this blogthis share to x share to facebook share to pinterest friday january 25 2013 super seventies saturday 9 jolene by dolly parton ok this one might be a little bit of a curveball considering the general style of tunes presented so far but then again dolly parton s jolene actually does fit into the serious theme of a lot of 70s tunes and it s a reminder that one of the big reasons the 70s were so cool music wise is that it s the first decade where all forms of music co mingled on any given radio station i m pretty sure i heard this tune on mainstream top 40 radio alongside stuff from elton john eagles the spinners etc just a cool potpourri of tunes probably my favorite dolly tune although 9 to 5 is pretty dang peppy and i will always love you is a classic even before whitney got aholt of it is aholt a word sounds good to me the line that speaks of auburn hair is pretty cool since i am an auburn football fan second most my main team is my alma mater uab but i grew up as an aubie so will always have that pulling as well anyway this song is just intense in that the cat s out of the bag regarding the affair so now dolly s just trying to reason with this jezebel jolene must be a variant of that no to leave her dude alone most likely to no avail ok well hope all is well out there wrapping up some work stuff this weekend but things are proceeding stay tuned until later hu posted by vkmfanhuey at 11 13 pm no comments email this blogthis share to x share to facebook share to pinterest tuesday january 22 2013 big band wednesday 7 sweet georgia brown by the count basie orchestra hi y all hope all is well for you hu and the crew are fine as for this week s big band selection i went with count basie and his orchestra performing that perennial fave sweet georgia brown a k a the harlem globetrotters theme song sgb was written by ben bernie bandleader maceo pinkard music and kenneth casey lyrics in the genteel year of 1925 it was a big hit for bernie s orchestra charting at 1 for 5 weeks according to wiki this song is the first to have a saxophone solo so there ya go this rendition by the count basie orchestra is noted as being from 1977 thus a somewhat recent recording a very cool note to the video at the beginning when the count sits down the dude on the upright bass is cleve eaton whom my ma knows from her time working in a local bakery he and his wife used to frequent there quite a bit and i even have a cd from him with him collaborating with some of the local musicians in town so it s real cool to kinda know this fellow i think i met him once when i was a young un but i would really like to hear some of his tales now anyway hope you enjoy a very nice dixieland type jazz tune have a great week y all until later hu posted by vkmfanhuey at 9 03 pm no comments email this blogthis share to x share to facebook share to pinterest saturday january 19 2013 super seventies saturday 8 year of the cat by al stewart well days are just running together here in south gingerville i tell ya we had snow on thursday lingered into bad roads friday morning so everyone took off and now it s normal but not real sure it s saturday but yepyepyep shure is so with that here s a fine tune from1976 by al stewart called year of the cat it s a quite moody tune best described as a cold barren windy winter day just my take on the mood it sets not sure where the year of the cat comes into play with that tone but a pretty neat song to just listen to and figure out what s up with the story hope everybody s doing well out there real or imaginary don t get t eo ed y all boy the spell check had a conniption with that word till later hu posted by goodman orchestra alright this one is just a very cool tune sung by the legend miss ella fitzgerald it s a nice little theme describing the end of a date night and how memories will remain in dreams cool stuff a goofy thought for this tune would be neat to play this on the pa system at a concert just after it is over and the lights turn on for folks to leave just my thought well hope all is well out there whoever s reading this my stats noted 0 reads the last three days so hmmm who knows if anything it s an archive for stuff so there until then hu posted by vkmfanhuey at 9 41 pm no comments email this blogthis share to x share to facebook share to pinterest friday january 11 2013 super seventies saturday 7 go all the way by the raspberries whoa is it the weekend again not that i m complaining or anything well here is the seventh installment of the super seventies saturday this one is a tune from 1972 called go all the way by the raspberries now first of all when i was a kid listening to this tune on the vastly inferior amplitude modulation am format ask your parents about it i thought the dude was saying please go away which of course is about as opposite of a meaning as one can have from the actual lyric all i remember was that although the stanza portions of the song were ok with nice harmony the real hook was obviously when the guitars kicked in and dude started yelling incoherently yeah but looking back on this one now it really is an interesting tune as this dude is really desiring this lady he is warbling about and his appraoch goes back and forth from please in the mellow harmony parts to a yelling lunatic who is more or less forcing the issue as it were in the kickin guitar parts and the bridge in the middle c mon c mon works pretty well as a big picture of what the end game is in his mind anyway ok probably waaay too much analysis on this but it s 12 30 a m that s ante meridiem not amplitude modulation well overall this song was a heavy rotation when i started listening to radio at the ripe old age of 5 ish and is probably one of my faves from that time if just to recall some of the cool goofyness that was the seventies hope y all
