r system until you have to actually pull them off i m not allergic to them but they sure do hurt that first day or so and then they itch like crazy on a lighter note a couple of weeks ago a friend and i drove north about an hour to spend the day at alton bay on lake winnepesaukee picture vintage new england lake town that still has a town dock roped off swimming area and two bandstands one on the zoom on my iphone but you ll get the idea people weren t the only ones having a good day as you ve probably noticed it s getting darker much earlier and fall is on its way some of the maple trees are turning already autumn joy sedum is showing color and i have some plants that need dividing or moving and fall is a good time for doing that enjoy the week as we roll into september goodbye summer s low humidity and sunshine windows are open humidity is rolling in later this week but until then i m a happy person the raspberries are done for the season so i ve cut this year s branches back so the row can rest up for next year the blueberries are coming on strong and are delicious i m going to make a blueberry dessert today so share with me what s your favorite blueberry dessert in the flower beds the daylilies and hydrangeas are absolutely beautiful the bees and monarchs are busy flying around and the hummingbirds keep me filling up their feeder about every three days i found an old photo of the triple dresser with the heavy double mirrors and then one of the current double dresser minus mirrors as i said after i cut the middle section out i reinforced the back and added a brace and a leg to each side works for me i ve spent some time trimming errant tree branches and boxwoods we have a lot of boxwoods and they suffered some serious winter burn which turns the leaves brown i was able to trim some quickly with a cordless electric hedge trimmer while others required sitting down and spending close up time to remove a lot of branches and then hope they will survive the process tomatoes are coming on and so are the tomato hornworms i found two yesterday they can strip a tomato plant faster than anything i ve ever seen leaves one day no leaves the very next day then the hunt begins to find the invaders because green insects aligning themselves along a green branch are not always easy to spot july has been busy because the weeds grow as fast as the flowers bloom for years i ve read every article i run across on how to reduce the amount of weed pulling a gardener has to do so far i ve tried just about everything and they still grow faster and bigger than posted on july 6 2026 by judy newenglandgardenandthread july came in on a high note like a real feel of 111 one afternoon courtesy of my weather station because i was inside with the central air running the rest of the days it stayed below 110 we were grateful that kind of heat affects the humans and their living conditions for sure but the plants shrubs and trees also take a hit well except for the raspberries because they loved it did you have a good 4th of july i didn t have any plans so decided to take on a diy project i didn t take any photos because i d actually already started before it occurred to me visualize a triple dresser three drawers on each side with two doors and three drawers in the middle i cut the middle out installed a stabilizer board on the back one on the bottom and attached a leg after two days of work several trips to home depot and a little stain i now have a double dresser i have one more return trip to home depot they ll probably miss seeing me after this return our weather forecast says we may get some rain this afternoon that would be wonderful because a couple of weeks ago i transplanted eight shrubs along with one new one i saw snowmound spirea on a garden tour and just knew i needed it it s a little pricey for my budget but i cut it in half and made two plants which made it quite cost effective how did i do that well i shopped for one that looked like at the base it could be cut in half cut the roots with a saw and the base with a lopper both halves are doing fine july invites some old perennial friends to show themselves and the regular weather forecast and now i find myself thinking of that as i mulch more and more to combat our almost daily winds what s blooming clematis maidenhair fern is not exactly blooming but it sure is beautiful perennial geraniums red peony white rose and trumpet vine the raspberries and blueberries are busy turning flowers into fruit and for that i m grateful and looking forward to harvesting this year s crop i ve put my reflective mylar pinwheels in both beds to try and discourage my feathered friends from sampling earlier in the season we had so many hummingbirds i was contemplating adding another feeder for the past few weeks i m lucky to see a couple a week oh the mysteries of the hummingbird migration our enlarged mail box planting bed for catching winter road salt only lost one plant of the dwarf shrub plantings last year i also only lost one to the winter weather not bad odds inside i finished my two wall hangings and tried using a stencil and joint compound to paint some 3d raised flowers on the wall near my sewing machine fun project if you like stencils and i do our annual mg plant sale in may was a big success our proceeds are used to fund a variety of community projects it s a lot of work for everyone involved but it sure is worthwhile to make such a positive impact in our community i ve been to a couple of plant sales have a garden tour newenglandgardenandthread it hit 80 one day this week i put the screens in opened the windows and just smiled maybe just maybe spring is finally here mother nature has been teasing us with a roller coaster of temperatures but i will say thanks that she didn t drop anything that i had to shovel the annual removal of the leaves has started i ve raked 22 bags so far you may be visualizing me raking an entire front and back lawn but i m only moving them off one single planting bed that has the misfortune of catching all the leaves from the neighbors five oaks and our one it s deep besides the warm temperature the most exciting thing has been the arrival of the hummingbirds we do love playing host to the hummingbirds each season the spring bulbs and flowers are blooming and i spent monday morning digging up plants for the annual master gardener plant sale when i don t know what to do with extra plants i put them out in the woods and when plant sale time arrives i go digging my challenge this year was finding ones that hadn t had their tops eaten by the deer wednesday a group got together to pot everything up because of various invasives we only use plants where all the soil has been removed rinsed and then we pot up in fresh potting soil the bleeding hearts blood root grape hyacinth daffodils and jack in the pulpits are all doing well my seed snails with annual flowers have done well on my south facing windowsills so now it s time to start hardening them off for planting by putting them outside for a few hours a day i even got the mower out got my daily steps and was a happy camper in those temps a couple of weeks ago i finally got the owl house up i haven t seen anyone moving in but it s there in case it s needed i also put up a weather station that i had received as a gift i really like it but need to figure out some of the items on the screen chairs are out for sitting and maybe the next warm day one of the skilled family baristas will bring out iced layers and the snow i could shovel or snowblow the life changing part didn t ask for my input our family lost a loved one this winter and the road that goes through grief and change is a challenging one as you all know i did finish my wall hanging and when i walk by i m reminded to enjoy and appreciate each new sunrise i repainted my sewing area and decided i d like a couple of new wall hangings so i have two small panels i m working on plus i have a counted cross stitch pattern i need to start on as soon as i can round up all the floss colors i need which is proving more challenging than i ever imagined outside the snow is melting the birds are singing and my gardening fingers are itching to get going we had a nice day this week so i got a start by picking up one load of the many downed branches and sticks today or tomorrow i ll move on to starting some seeds last week i attended a gardening workshop on harnessing plants to solve problems with tovah martin and today i m participating the new year if we re lucky we roll around to another birthday it seems ungrateful to complain about advancing age when so many are denied that opportunity so i won t i will acknowledge that as each year comes around i do age out of some things camping was a wonderful part of our life until it became too much spending three months in south carolina in the winter was amazing until it wasn t being able to lift bags of soil and compost was taken for granted until i needed to ask for help in loading however unloading from a pickup truck is easy gravity helps years ago when i was working in corporate america i was promoted over another woman i had the degree she had the experience we were both around 50 but she was a couple of years older she sued for age discrimination as i sat in the courtroom with our attorneys her attorney called the executive who had promoted me to the stand he asked him if when he considered both candidates did he notice that i was relatively youthful to this day i don t know how he replied because i was trying so hard not to choke or laugh those of you reading this who are in your 60 s are relatively youthful living life to its fullest and are in the midst of those golden years applause to each of you and keep it up the reality is as you push close to 70 and beyond things may get a little more challenging with medical issues creeping in even though best efforts have been made to keep them at bay since i last posted a friend lost her husband one had a serious medical episode another one has just been diagnosed with cancer and i just heard
