scientists are covering large ice sheets called glaciers with wool so they won t melt as fast fabrice coffrini afp getty images sheep s wool covers the two large pieces of ice on the left the one on the right is covered by a plastic tarp scientists in switzerland have come up with a new way to keep the nation s glaciers from melting too quickly they are covering them with wool glaciers which are large ice sheets have covered the upper part of the alps mountain range for thousands of years but the ice has been shrinking due to climate change this past summer a heat wave caused winter mountain snow to melt earlier in the year than usual leaving the glaciers exposed to the sun for longer with less ice rocks are more likely to slide down the mountain causing danger to communities below for years scientists have put plastic coverings called tarpaulins or tarps over some of the ice during the summer the plastic reflects the sunlight keeping the heat of the sun away from the glaciers but the tarps also shed tiny pieces of plastic polluting the area that s where the wool comes in fabrice coffrini afp getty images the coverings in the photo are helping to keep large glaciers from melting in the sun s heat a group of scientists and university students decided to try covering the glaciers with wool blankets instead of plastic tarps in june 2026 the group placed two blankets over 2 100 square feet 200 square meters of a glacier all summer they compared the rate of melting in those areas with that of ice that was covered by a tarp the scientists found that the ice under the wool melted as slowly as the ice under the tarp now we have a result we can see and even touch said elliot gaffiot a student it worked incredibly well but the wool doesn t solve the bigger problem it can t cover all the world s melting glaciers it doesn t change the fact that climate change is bringing about other issues such as more severe weather the way to slow climate change scientists say is to reduce greenhouse gases and that means burning fewer fossil fuels news extra indigenous peoples day david lyons alamy encyclopædia britannica inc chris pietsch the register guard usa today network imagn image joseph prezioso afp getty images tom croke alamy photo composite encyclopædia britannica inc october 12 is indigenous peoples day in the united states it s a day to honor the history cultures and traditions of indigenous peoples in the united states indigenous peoples are also called american indians or native americans indigenous peoples day is the second monday in october the same day as columbus day which has been a federal holiday since 1937 american indians were in the americas for thousands of years before italian explorer christopher columbus landed there a good way to observe indigenous peoples day is to learn more about indigenous peoples there are hundreds of american indian tribes in the united states each has its own history culture and traditions so where should the learning begin one idea is to start where you live if you re in the united states find out which indigenous peoples live or lived where you now live and learn about their history did you know ahmed stock adobe com in the arctic polar bears seals and other animals need ice it s their habitat for resting traveling hunting sea animals and even finding mates all things ice malte mueller fstop getty images the larger part of an iceberg is under the water ice sheets are areas of ice that spread out over 20 00 square miles 50 000 square kilometers or more they form in areas where snow falls in winter and does not melt most of earth s ice is near the poles the northernmost and southernmost parts of our planet glaciers form when snow piles up in the mountains and is compacted into solid ice the ice eventually starts sliding down the mountain as a glacier glaciers move about 10 inches 25 centimeters a day the massive weight of moving glaciers gives them the power to carve out deep u shaped valleys icebergs are chunks of ice that break off from ice sheets or glaciers and float in the ocean the smaller part of an iceberg can be seen above the ocean s surface but the larger part is hidden under the water this makes icebergs dangerous to ships icebergs can float for thousands of miles they melt when they reach warmer waters the southernmost continent andrew peacock e
