been there done that ennui and aching world weariness prevent me from making the road trip writing weird fiction has always been a playful activity for me even when the work has been dark the generation of the work has been playful playing with language playing with characters playing with my own nightmares playing constantly playing likewise talking about weird fiction on convention panels has also been playful playing with ideas playing with analyses etc i find it hard to play in 2026 laughing at the absurdity of human nature and the nature of the cosmos is a fine activity when one s society is stable and one s life is untouched by the shadow of authoritarianism alas the rise of political extremism in the u s has ruined cosmic horror philosophical pessimism ligotti schopenhauer lovecraft for me for as it turns out there really is such a thing as evil and i do believe that good exists as well albeit in far shorter supply in retrospect this is not a new development my days as a nihilist were numbered as soon as i started taking antidepressants way back in 2016 how valid can a philosophy be if it loses steam when one finally gets enough serotonin similarly much of my transgressive fiction was fueled by trauma both my own and the vicarious trauma i received from working in a helping profession but once i worked through all that in therapy and left the helping profession once i came out the other side more or less healed what fuel was there for literary darkness in the current environment it has seemed far wiser to invest my time in learning a bit about self defense rather than indulge in artistic endeavors now all that having been said this is not a declaration of retirement i have been self publishing my latest book the pessimistic adventures of gigglenoose in installments on patreon and i ve written a couple of new poems one of which has just been published in spectral realms i have enjoyed playing with words in the poetic context i might do more of that but conventions nope not for a while at least there s freedom from disentangling oneself from the genre zeitgeist the drama the pretension the performative nature of panels etc on a similar note i ve decided to become a digital hermit as well i still have a facebook account just so family and friends from my home town can reach me but i feel the need to disentangle myself from that creepy hivemind the disturbing reinforcement of likes etc i cannot afford to move away from society on some billion acre ranch in south dakota but by disentangling myself
