was a fun trip we stopped and got shave ice afterwards yummy all the girls started ayso soccer this week with their first games on saturday lance is coaching taryn s team and is the assistant coach for shaylee s team this is addi and lexi s first year of soccer and they love it when we first told lexi about it she didn t want to play at all but once she went to the first practice she has loved it in their first game they both got very determined and each scored a couple of goals they only play 3 vs 3 and don t have goalies but they really had a great time when the game was over we were congratulating them on having fun and scoring goals then addi said very matter of factly yeah but we lost the game she wasn t sad about it thankfully we hadn t even said anything about if they won or not i guess they really are paying attention to what s going on shaylee loves playing on her team this is her first year with ayso and was excited that her team won 1 0 this is taryn s first year playing 11 vs 11 and her team did really well despite losing 3 1 they play coed in this league in her age group u14 because there aren t enough kids to have separate girls and boys teams taryn kept right up with everyone there and was a great asset to the team on thursday shaylee and lance went to the stake achievement days daddy daughter date it had a country theme so they both wore cowboy hats and scarfs first they drew wanted posters for each other shifty shay and really bad daddy then visited with friends had a yummy dinner bbq chicken in marinade sauce corn potatoes scone with honey butter and an ice cream cone received recognition awards and did some line dancing it was a really nice event and they both had a great time together on saturday garrett and devin went to the first ever salt lake comic con they had a lot of fun seeing the stars that were there seeing all the people dressed as comic characters and checking out the different things for sale they each bought a star wars themed bathrobe garrett s got boba fett and devin got chewbacca posted in uncategorized leave a comment it s like riding a bike posted on september 1 2013 by christalance so it s official now we have now taught all of our kids how to ride a bike our tradition is that the summer that our kids are 5 years old we take off the training wheels and start the process in the movies or on tv you get this idealized picture of a father holding on to the back of the bike seat running behind the bike and then letting go about this time the swelling music picks up and the child has this huge smile on his her face while the father and mother start cheering and clapping with tears of joy running down their faces all i have to say is that if this is how it is supposed to go then we are doing something drastically wrong our experience has been somewhat less inspiring than the ideal however we have learned a few valuable lessons along the way our process is more like this when we first tell the child that we are going to teach them how to ride a big kid bike they get all excited so we go out and get the bike s ready to ride lubricate the bearings and chain patch or replace the tubes remove the training wheels and fix any other problems with the bikes with addi and lexi we went to the store to get all the stuff we needed to fix the bikes and it turned out we could buy new ones for about 10 more than buying all of the supplies so that s what we did they were super excited for their brand new bikes then the fun really starts we put them on the bike and hold on to the handlebar and the seat and tell them to start peddling as they start moving we hold them up a little but let the bike tip a little bit to start helping them get used to balancing this is where the panic begins to set in as soon as they feel the bike tip they let go of the handle bar and lean right into us so we have to catch them so we pick up the bike and try again and again and again about the third time trying they are in complete hysterics and are crying that they want to stop of course as stubborn as we are we won t let them stop until they have made some progress after about 20 minutes or so we have been running beside them holding them up we are exhausted from the running and our back hurts from leaning over holding onto the seat despite the weeping wailing and gnashing of teeth they have made some progress and we quit for the day the next day we go out again and as soon as we tell them it s time to go ride bikes they start crying and saying they don t want to of course we make them try again anyway after about 3 or 4 times taking them out with all the running and crying they finally are pretty much riding on their own with us just resting a hand on their back to give them confidence they still panic and cry a little but at least they aren t letting go of the handle bars at the slightest tip of the bike inevitably at some point during this process they will see some obstacle a fence curb parked car etc their entire focus immediately is fixated on whatever the obstacle is and it becomes impossible for them to look anywhere else naturally they steer the bike directly toward this obstacle and they are drawn to it like an asteroid to a black hole we know this is going to happen so we say don t look at it look where you want to go the first few times this happens we have to rescue them and stop them before they run into it most of time we get there in time but they will crash at least once because of this phenomenon a scraped knee shin or elbow later we dust them off and put them right back up on the bike finally after about the 5th or 6th day they can ride on their own and we don t have to be right next to them and they have learned to turn and look where they want to go it is always exciting when they finally get it and realize that it s actually fun to ride bikes they always seem so surprised at how fast they can go now that they don t have training wheels we have thought about this and have realized that life is like riding a bike we are trying to learn how to control our lives so we can get where we want to go however sometimes we have obstacles come up when we fixate upon these obstacles our problems become larger than life and are the only thing that we can think about and we are drawn into darkness and error like the bike to the curb ultimately this path leads us to heartache pain and or depression however if we choose instead to focus our attention upon our ultimate goal that is eternal life with heavenly father jesus christ and our family our problems begin to fade into our peripheral vision and we are lead back into the pathway of happiness because when we think of the atonement we remember that christ served others in everything he did this leads us to desire to serve others as we serve others we are filled with the love of god charity and this is the most desirable fruit that brings us the greatest happiness well enough of the sermon we are excited that addi and lexi have learned to ride bikes and we are very proud of them we are proud of all of our kids here are a couple of pictures of the twins riding their bikes posted in uncategorized 2 comments six in school posted on august 26 2013 by christalance believe it or not but we now have 6 that would be all 6 kids attending school that is just crazy wasn t it just yesterday that we sent garrett to kindergarten for the first time now after about 2 or 3 seconds addi and lexi are officially school kids garrett and devin are going to high school taryn is at middle school and shaylee addison and alexa are at elementary school posted in uncategorized leave a comment of trees and schools posted on march 1 2013 by christalance at the end of the summer we finally finished the tree house we helped a neighbor move who had a bunch of railing posts that he was going to throw away so we salvaged them and used some old wooden handrails and 4 x 4 posts to put up a railing to try and keep the kids away from the edge it also does wonders for our peace of mind when they are up there the kids were very excited to help paint it we ended up with maroon rails and gray floor it actually looks pretty good we also did some trimming of our big tree in the front yard the branches were starting to encroach upon our neighbor s house it was pretty scary at the top of the ladder with a hand saw trying to cut a 3 branch somehow lance managed not to fall to his death christa and the kids had a great time dragging branches to our yard of course they also had a good time making forts and hiding places in the branches the kids all went back to school again at the end of august garrett to jordan devin to eastmont and taryn and shaylee to alta view they are all growing so fast where does the time go addi and lexi love to put on makeup posted in uncategorized 1 comment visitors posted on january 27 2013 by christalance in the first part of week of june is always christa s family reunion we always have a great time visiting with everyone and spending time together one of our traditions is to take a day and go to the pool at lava idaho where we swim all day jump off the platforms ride the big waterslides and have a fried chicken picnic on the grass this time we also took a day and went through lariat caves which is only about 20 miles northwest of american falls idaho as the crow flies but more like 1 hr and 20 minutes as the car drives after driving crawling along the very dusty road in the hot sun it was really nice down in the coolness of the cave lariat cave has a loop in it and is formed from one of the lava tubes similar to the caves at craters of the moon national park there was only one injury in the caves when christa s brother dylan took a nice chunk out of his forehead when he didn t quite duck far enough on other days we had our traditional family dinner at the park and went to rigby to visit aloy s family posted in uncategorized leave a comment down at downata hot springs posted on january 20 2013 by christalance in june 2012 we went camping at downata hot springs for a couple of days with our friends the coles seriously i think they named it that because 150 years ago some farmer in downey idaho said to one of his kids where ya bin and the reply was down at a hot springs at least that s they only reason i can think of for naming it that the resort has a swimming pool and hot tub that are filled from the hot springs they mix the pool water with some cold water so the pool is only about 95 degrees compared to the 110 degrees in the hot tub they also have 2 big waterslides a grassy camping area basketball courts sand volleyball courts tetherball and that s about it it was a lot of fun playing in the pool they have a rolling log that was fun to play on doing the slides cooking over the fire playing ball and playing in the sand we also brought our hammock and bikes garrett and lance went for a 8 10 mile ride into downey on the way home from downata we stopped by an old church built in 1898 in beaver dam utah lance had done some engineering work for a water system in the area and was showing it to the family when we got there there were about 5 or 6 really big wild turkeys hanging around the church posted in uncategorized leave a comment nielsen reunion 2012 posted on january 6 2013 by christalance in july we had the nielsen family reunion in orem at kaelynn s house we had a great time with all those who were able to make it and really missed those who couldn t major props to kaelynn and royce for putting up with so many intruders in their home some of the highlights of the reunion included a hike to the y in provo giant twister in the family room family olympics tug of war relay races jousting etc water slides family fun run skits awards crafts slide show presentations and lots of visiting and hanging out together on one afternoon we went to the byu bookstore to look around and spend some time together garrett found a cool cougar hat to try out the water slides were a real hit for everyone it was pretty hot so the water was a welcome relief the sliding part was fun too grandma jan even did the slide it was great on friday we did some relaxing around the house devin was reading to some of the smaller children while grandma read on the couch very cute grandpa was sleeping on the couch when several of the smaller kids decided to play along there were some fun crafts for the kids to do devin liked the ring he made one evening we took the whole crew and hiked to the y on the mountain east of provo it was light when we started but by the time we got to the y it was pretty dark it s a pretty steep hike and took a while to get all the small legs to make the whole climb charly even made it to the y with a broken leg posted in uncategorized leave a comment achievement days and family posted on november 18 2012 by christalance christa
