junior high team and the little league team this year thankfully those seasons didn t overlap by much though little league kind of petered out due to weather and attrition lots of games on the 10 2026 categories gallery 1 comment on april backlog a few cool pickups another month another roundup of cool pickups these 1888 duke s cigarettes cards have intrigued me for a long time they give the appearance of being the same size as an arbuckle coffee card but are in fact a bit smaller since they are in fact the size of three standard tobacco cards i do knot know if they were packed folded but the wear on this one suggests that that may be the case with one panel on the back showing a lot more staining than the rest chromolithography with metallic ink is always great and i really love the artwork with what it s chosen to represent california is very clear that yosemite and the big redwoods loom large in the state s identity but it s nice to see the fruit and agriculture as well the san francisco yacht club is a bit of a surprise and fantastic local detail too the back is also wonderful with the state map showing the railroad routes key cities some remain important others do not and other features like the presence of tulare lake and the absence of the salton sea the history is pretty brief but the population information is also really interesting with one of the biggest takeaways for me being that mexican americans aren t mentioned and while no doubt many of the indians are in fact mexican american there are presumably many who are being counted as white i added a couple more old herbert hoover cards the first is a 1964 general mills card which i think was cut from a cereal box since it has a blank grey cardboard back the second is from 1975 and i kind of dig how nice the bio is to him rather than blaming him for the depression a pair of muhlen francks which i picked up primarily for the dorothy poynton hill card since she s one of the small group of athletes who appears both in this set and in the garbaty set the high jumper is cornelius johnson one of 19 black american athletes at the munich games who set an olympic record on the way to winning gold i only recently found out about the 1977 topps cloth stickers checklists there are eighteen different ones with their fronts forming forming two puzzles one for each 1976 all star team completed puzzles on ebay are a bit more than i wanted to spend but a quick look around for individual cards and allowed me to assemble the national league team for a fraction of the price this is going in the stanford album because bob boone is present in the image he s seated in the center of the 9 00 card between al oliver and john montefusco i was tempted to put this in the giants album but boone being an all star is more notable especially since this is his first of four appearances i really wish puzzles like this still existed i do them a lot on my custom cards but if i were king of topps i d have a kid focused set of 270 cards where each team gets a team photo or stadium photo or some sort of celebration scene puzzle from the backs of its nine cards i ll never pass up the chance for a handful of cheap stanford ink don t have really anything to say about these guys aside from noting that i grew up watching mccarty and lorraine while gall and schaeffer played while i was in school i do really like the card of lorraine on the canadians and pat osborn is not stanford but instead was the trenton thunder manager in 2019 when the boys and i were in the kids club i have his autograph on a ball but never managed to get a card that year the last batch for this post is this pair of 1968 1969 panini campioni dello sport cards it s big 511 card set of various olympic champions as well as various italian teams and athletes not something i m actively searching for but the marjorie gestring card popped up and when i was looking at what else the seller had available the charles daniels card caught my eye eg there s an italian baseball team card bob mathias and duke kahanamoku are on the checklist as well daniels is noteworthy as a major innovator in the development of what we now call freestyle swimming but which is actually the front crawl i also need to state here that i ve always loved the panini logo because the idea of a knight on foot with a lance is so silly the main reason i got these cards though is because i really wanted to write about the auto translation fail on ebay which cracked me up when the gestring popped up in my search it took me way longer than it should ve for me to realize why the listing was for marjorie thong and when it did all i could do was laugh and be very thankful that my searches for gestring weren t filled with underwear or recordings of wilhelmj bach and yes this means that these cards came from italy along with the muhlen francks above from germany i decided to see to if international mail was so screwed up that even cheap untracked envelopes were more trouble than they were worth it doesn t seem like letters have been affected yet mail from germany two and a half weeks mail from italy two and a half months so cool pickups may trade packages a quick summary of a few trade packages i received last month i normally get posts like this written a lot faster but may was kind of crazy on the kid front with two baseball teams track three band concerts an orchestra concert multiple rounds of standardized testing and my youngest s confirmation which came with family visiting and staying with us receiving and looking through trade packages was great sorting cataloging and scanning them though not so much the first package came from mathew glidden who was clearing out modern cards for teams he doesn t collect and managed to stuff a ton of giants cards into a single pwe he basically hit the quarter inch thickness limit but still managed to get it accepted by his post office with only two forever stamps this is a quick photo of the loot not everything is shown since each set is stacked you can kind of tell that a few of those piles are kinda big most of these were cards i already own but i ll still go through the binder to make sure that they re in the giants portion a bunch of the 1980s tcma cards are from the hygrade kit so while i have them they might be buried in one of the childhood binders that i still haven t touched since 1994 these four though are definitely new to me i never look for baseball card magazine cards so those are always welcome and fun to add this is a fun play on the ashburn mays card from 1959 which features two guys where were huge in 1989 but which have mostly been forgotten now the mitchell sports illustrated is fantastic since while i ve been hitting the stanford cards i have not even thought about looking for giants cards i also don t chase the conlon cards so adding a john meyers is great addition i am intrigued by the native americans tag and wonder who else has it and how many of them are named chief seems like only seven and albert bender is the only other with that nickname and the 2024 patrick bailey is a numbered color parallel which is the kind of thing i never even look for it definitely jazzes up the album though too many verlanders is a new trade partner for me he offered to send me a 1990 score set in exchange for whatever tigers i could muster i sent off an oversized 2023 riley green from costco and received an expertly packaged flat rate bubble mailer that he d somehow managed to cram the entire score set into i did not take the set out to photograph or scan it but when transferring it to a single long box i did see that it was sorted by number and that the bo and frank thomas rookie cards were indeed present 1990 score was not one of my favorite of the score sets from my youth 1988 was a revelation 1989 hits me in the nostalgia feels and 1991 is one of my favorite checklists ever but the more i looked at it the more i realized it was full of cards that i remembered fondly not just the bo and the highlights of the giants postseason run but also they took a huge step forward in the action photography with cards like the walt weiss that hinted at what 1991 topps was going to do he also tossed in this 2001 press pass willie howard autograph which is very cool howard was kind of the emotional captain of the football team when i was at school and i remember him celebrating going to the rose bowl in 2000 there was also this mini pennant which i m considering putting into the binder since it s small enough to fit in a page there s a 1999 copyright date on it and the san francisco lettering does have that kind of feel i also got a nice envelope from kenny in japan inside were a pair of 2026 calbee cards a very cool munetaka murakami foil 2024 bushiroad dream order card and card featuring a pair of girls from i m assuming an abema tv show i appreciate that kenny sends me the more demure girlie cards the highlight of course is the murakami since he s been tearing things up with the white sox to the point where every other fan is asking why their team passed on him i m not a collectible card game guy in general but i ve found that i really enjoy the japanese sports ones because they suggest a very different sports card ecosystem the two calbees are also very cool fun to see the dna remaining somewhat the same decades later with a full bleed photo and the most basic text on the front the hawks player is akira nakamura while the carp player is daisuke moriura i scanned the backs of these because they re kind of interesting the calbee s are a huge improvement on what they were in the 1970s pretty minimal stats even though the design is very clean i do like that carp logo the
