is just us building something wild together every summer in the monegros desert spain it s not a festival let s be clear we roll up to an empty piece of land and over about two weeks we build a whole temporary city from scratch then we make it all vanish leaving zero trace behind that s the whole drill this is how we do it the anti festival vibe forget vip areas stages run by companies or people paid to manage your good time if you see a structure a dance floor or a meal that only exists because one of our friends decided to create it no spectators you don t attend to consume you commit to co creating it everyone contributes no money seriously we don t use cash on site the whole place runs on gifting mutual support and effort you bring what you need to survive the desert water food shelter tools toys gifts and share what you can no bosses this whole thing is run by volunteers people like you the dream is to be totally community owned and shaped by the people who show up at its core elsewhere is a giant social experiment it s where art and chaos bubble up from the collective it s creativity connection and collective effort guided by our shared principles think gifting self free to express share and co create but when what we do affects someone else we ask clear communication matters boundaries matter respect always matters before turning up the music on your boombox looking around your immediate area and asking the nearest people if the volume would interfere with what they are doing show example community a family of individuals we look after each other we re all separate self reliant beings but we come together because we want to be part of something bigger than ourselves we look out for one another with tolerance care and a bit of joy checking in on a fellow participant who has been quiet and alone for a day even if you don t know them and asking if they need water or just a quiet space show example cooperation together we are stronger from raising structures to figuring things out on the fly cooperation is at the heart of elsewhere if we can make something easier or better together we do a group setting up a large complicated art installation pauses their work to help a solo participant put up their tent because they see them struggling against the wind show example gifting we give our time effort and gifts freely a cold drink a helping hand a weird little handmade thing gifts come from the heart nothing is expected back giving away the last cold beer you brought for yourself to someone who looks overheated and then actively refusing their offer to trade a handmade necklace for it show example immediacy make now count be here fully this will all disappear sooner than you think so experience it participate in it be in it putting your phone completely away for the entire event even to take photos because you choose to focus on experiencing the moment directly rather than documenting it show example inclusion everyone is welcome to be a nobody people come as they are and that s the point include others the way you d want to be included with respect care and openness actively seeking out the most introverted person in your camp who hasn t spoken much and creating space for them to share their one small quirky contribution without pressure to be outgoing show example leave no trace from dust to dust we leave only footprints we take care of the land that hosts us we clean up after ourselves and leave nothing behind not even the small stuff not only packing out all your own trash but also meticulously sweeping the ground where your tent stood to pick up micro trash like glitter broken zip ties or stray hairs show example no commerce forget about money there s nothing to buy no brands no selling no transactions without money in the mix what s left is cooperation participation and what actually matters realizing you forgot essential sunscreen and asking around to borrow some rather than defaulting to trying to find someone selling it for cash or barter show example participation get involved elsewhere is what we make it you don t come here to watch you come here to do and the more you put in the more it becomes yours taking the initiative to wake up before dawn to sweep the common area of your camp or refill the communal water station without being asked show example self expression the freedom to be yourself be who you are or who you want to be we respect that freedom and expect the same respect in return wearing an outfit that makes you feel vulnerable or challenging but consciously ensuring that your expression does not disturb the sleep or comfort of your neighbors show example self reliance you are responsible for you mentally and physically bring what you need take care of yourself and when you need help ask that s part of it too bringing enough food and water for the entire trip plus a small emergency surplus so that if you fall ill you do not become a
