embed permalink it s lgbtq pride month right now and is going to be disability pride month next month so it feels like a good time to talk about gender identity ocd and my experience of it i believe i first learned about gocd from notabled noodle here on tumblr and it helped me a lot to make sense of my internal world gocd is not a fear of being trans for me i fear that i would be happier as another gender and that i m not living my life to the fullest by being cis on the flipside i m also worried that i m not trans and that transitioning will make me miserable this type of doubt isn t super uncommon among non ocders but it becomes ocd when it s very frequent and or very distressing any time i think about my gender i e when people address me using certain nouns or pronouns when i m getting dressed for an event it turns into anxiety about whether i m being my true self this is the obsessive part the compulsions can include trying out labels social transition steps or temporary physical transition steps to see if they feel right it can be a challenge for me to tell what s a genuine desire to explore my gender and what s a compulsion driven by fear of being the wrong gender living in a transphobic society complicates this further as it makes it difficult to tell where internal negative reactions to transition originate labels that allow for being in between like genderfluid cusper genderflux etc don t completely alleviate the issue because most of my ocd centers around whether i should take more permanent physical transition steps like top surgery and going on t switching around labels is mostly something i do because i hope the right label will guide me on physical transition this might change from person to person but i find it triggering for my ocd when other people suggest possible genders for me or encourage me to take certain transition steps i understand that it comes from a place of love but ocd will try to use that to convince me that i m just going along with what other people want think of me and not what i really want really the only way to manage ocd is to either find meds that reduce the symptoms or learn to manage your reactions to intrusive thoughts i m currently both on meds and in therapy with a therapist who specializes in ocd and have found both to be helpful for my gocd i and most other people with gocd have intrusive thoughts and compulsions not related to gender as well i was primarily diagnosed with ocd due to my hoarding compulsion and most of my intrusive thoughts are consistent with harm ocd my pcos and the concept of being intersex also play into this but frankly the post was already too long also sorry if this isn t the most coherent cfs is frying my brain i just wanted to talk about this anyway
