e a guy named adijin and when people see his work they are going to flip and i imagine that soon after uv target gets published adijin will get caught up in a flood of offers to work on books for the big guys and i ll never see him again so i m looking forward to this getting into print before that happens laughs that entire fully painted graphic novel should be done in time for the san diego con next year now that giles has started working as an indy writer and getting things published he has some advice for other writers who want to try their hand at scripting if you re a writer what i d recommend is making sure how to write a comic book in a proper understandable comic book script format i ve learned that you have to make things clear for the artist so they understand what s going on in your head that s a skill you need to develop and i apologize to my artists because i m sure a lot of my early scripts made them shake their heads and say what is he talking about but i think now i ve gotten the hang of it as far as being an indy writer in this industry i m sure people already know it s tough and it s a lot of work even though i came into it for fun and it s still fun don t get me wrong but you have to be prepared for the fact that it s a long haul you have to be willing to wait for an artist you really click with work with the artist be patient and then find that level of synergy where you guys produce your best work together i think that sometimes people don t nurture that relationship enough and forget that the artist should feel like they have a voice in what is easily the best chapter in the main set of marvel sandbox films and by that i mean the films that feature their a list characters like iron man captain america etc with arguably the best script best storyline and most real world sensibilities we ve ever dealt with yet as many other reviewers have noted it starts out a bit slow as the storyline is being pieced together and i will suggest that there are hidden story elements and clues about character s motivations and loyalties that are revealed but not yet resolved in this film which leaves us with more than enough threads to pull on in later installments of the franchise but i won t mention what those are in this review you re welcome to me it plays out like a fascinating hybrid between the bourne films and iron man grounding the story and the conflict in common sense realities throwing in sinister plots and unseen twists and peppering us with cool gadgets and explosive action until we re mesmerized by the final act if you ve read the comics that this story is based upon you ll no doubt find yourself bracing yourself in certain places to anticipate what happens next and all i can say is sometimes your fears will be justified and sometimes you ll be pleasantly surprised when they zig rather than zag at least i was all this and i haven t even talked about the action and giddy geek tastic joy i felt seeing vision black panther spider man ant man cap iron man and the rest of the gang all onscreen at the same time without going into detail let me just say that this film satisfies every possible bone in my nerdy little body and gives us the best versions of every single character hawkeye shines like never before and finally acts and sounds like he does in the comics black panther is breath taking spider man is spot on falcon a character i could not possibly care any less about is seriously showcased as an impressive character with real abilities that make him worthy to become cap s side kicking partner heck even war machine has his moment and it s great seriously i realize i should probably mention a few negatives from the film to counter balance all my gushing glee but it s a struggle to find anything to complain about i guess i m not happy with the younger sexier aunt may character the older version from the toby macguire film is perfect in every way but i think that s about it for me in the complaint department as always be sure to stay seated during the credits for two separate teaser clips that foreshadow a few of marvel s upcoming projects and probably not the ones you re expecting them to tease the russo brothers have proven themselves more than worthy to take the mantle from whedon and favreau which is great news knowing that the next two avenger s films will be entrusted to their capable hands it s hard to say if non geeks or marvel movie fanatics would love this film as much as i did an awareness of these characters and their past adventures together and alone in their solo films is pretty much essential i think to really appreciating some of the jokes and unspoken glances between characters throughout the film if you re not brushed up on your captain america and iron man film lore i d highly recommend a mini festival to catch you up before you head into the theater to watch civil war it might not be essential to do so but it sure wouldn t hurt that brings up another element to the marvel films which i really love continuity between every film things that happen in iron man play out in captain america and characters introduced in avengers get further developed in ant man etc so the conversations we begin in this film will no doubt be continued in future films and that ongoing character development is something every fan should appreciate next up is doctor strange in november and i cannot wait to see where marvel takes us next overall i cannot recommend civil war enough it succeeds on every level for me and leaves me wanting and bolts stuff anyway remember how i said that writing is work well it is and a big part of the work of writing involves research research is what separates good writing from great writing it s what makes your writing stand above the crowd and it lends your writing a degree of credibility that un researched writing lacks it doesn t matter how cool your concept if you don t have good research to inject the story with a degree of believability then you re sunk article continued below advertisement let me tell you i ve really learned to do a lot of research google is my best friend and i ve spent a lot of time in my local library looking at historical materials magazines and technical journals to make sure i get it right for example on my sci fi western durango sivler i did tons of research on native american history in fact a lot of that research material greatly influenced my initial story ideas and even provided essential elements of the plot itself the more i learned about native american culture and history the research can shape and change your writing in ways you never dreamed of do it it s good for you on my other book digerati i ve been scouring the net for detailed info about weapons futuristic munitions psychotropic technology and even medical psychology of the human brain and memory for the devil s riding horse i researched the real life works of nicolai syadristy and the siberian meteor crash of 1901 for uv target i researched the entire spectrum of light depleted uranium and the cloning and genetic engineering processes used by scientists worldwide to be honest for hard video i didn t research diddly the entire concept came to me in a dream and i just sat down and wrote it out verbatim that doesn t happen very often so that s why you have to rely on research not only that but hard video benefited from some great feedback sessions with creator paul pope and sci fi writer richard kadrey if you don t have sounding boards like that at your disposal trust me do the research whatever you do don t use comic books as your research material other comics are a poor source of reference for any form of writing you need to read actual books on the subjects you re interested in you need to spend time at websites that publish real credible and reliable sources of information on whatever you re writing about again don t use sin city as a reference book for your crime novel i mean read a real novel or science book or study up on issues that interest you research also involves paying attention to the world around you look at the way people walk and talk and move in real life not just in the movies and in comics you re looking for the small details that will make your story come to life and feel true research brings your writing into the real world even if what you re writing about isn t this world we re living in now so start with your basic story concept make a list of the subjects you ll need additional information on and medium the japanese manga market is largely a disposable one as opposed to the collector mentality that dominates the us market the question is with all this in mind is there anything that the american comics industry can learn from manga or is the widespread popularity of manga simply a product of the unique japanese culture and therefore something that cannot be duplicated here in the manga publishers in japan they will sob and moan and groan about the poor state of the industry there s a decade long recession going on young readers are spending more and more time on video games and the internet and spending all their disposable income on cell phones manga sales have been static sometimes even declining for the last few years of course most publishers comic and non comic in other countries would still be dumbfounded by the sales and profitability of manga in japan the problem for japan is that from the early sixties to the mid nineties annual growth rates in the manga business were astronomical people took it for granted that sales would continue to increase exponentially but the manga market in japan is now saturated and the only real potential growth areas left are among senior citizens and overseas it s one reason we are seeing so many more manga exported it s not just the intrinsic popularity of the manga themselves it s the fact that japanese publishers are actively seeking overseas markets now just like japanese car manufacturers and computer manufacturers before them tamai all i can say about that is that if you consider the unfortunate drop in the japanese anime industry s economics domestically and expenditures for big budget anime like ghost in the shell jin roh or akira comics in japan are like the one economic stable which has gone virtually unscathed by the recent recession that s really amazing when you think of recent market conditions to its credit unlike the american side readership accounts for almost any age and gender
