uestion of which muppet plays which character kermit as per usual would probably get a major part but to have him play holmes leaves miss piggy without a partner to have him as watson that automatically casts miss piggy as mrs watson however the homoeroticism would challenge miss piggy and kermit s relationship and as comitted a johnlock shipper i am i wouldn t want to get in the way of kermit and miss piggy instead kermit could have another role such as detective stanley hopkins if the plot was based upon one of the stories which hopkins is involved in then he would seem more like a main character hopkins as a character could conceivably be quite similar to kermit as a person or muppet so i think that fits quite nicely additionally a mrs hopkins could be created to cast miss piggy i can t decide if fozzie bear would be better suited as lestrade or mycroft holmes to have him as lestrade would fall into the typical casting of lestrade as generally being a little bit stupid and ill fitting as a detective when that wasn t exactly a narrative within the books if he was mycroft however that wouldn t match how intelligent mycroft is supposed to be as a working idea i would want to cast him as a police officer potentially lestrade or gregson even gonzo is quite difficult i don t know if he could be antagonistic enough to play moriarty now that i think about it maybe moriarty should be played by a human if moriarty s even a part in this adaptation gonzo could even make a good holmes but who plays watson rizzo the rat i thought maybe dr bunsen honeydew and beaker could play the pair but which is which either way they would have the chemistry for it pun intended consider statler and waldorf the heckler muppets as holmes and watson but in their later years they don t match the personalities but for some reason it fits better in my head than gonzo and rizzo the rat mrs hudson would be camilla the chicken and rowlf the dog would be the dog not the one that holmes experiments on in a study in scarlet that s too dark for a muppets adaptation sam eagle might actually make a good mycroft but that questions the parentage of his and sherlock s parents as how did they produce and eagle and a muppet man though i suppose that the muppet cratchit family was made up of pigs and frogs and everyone was fine with that pepe the king prawn could play wiggins animal and his bandmates could be the other baker street irregulars or do something completely different watson is the only human that poses the same difficulties as before however so you might be able to stories i ve written a post about this very thing before i ve also a small masterpost here with links to posts from people more educated on the topic than i am lol because they actually studied this stuff i googled lol check those links out too they re very interesting holmesguy mar 22 2017 while we ll probably never have outright confirmation of acd s intentions on this front it s definitely true that he would have faced alot of legal and social consequences if he had sought to make his characters explicitly gay which would have necessitated hiding or coding it if that was his intention here is a run down of different things relating to the idea 1 acd was friends with oscar wilde they met in person and also exchanged correspondence and were fans of each other s work please read this post for some more detail on that acd was also friends acquaintances with another man who doyle had tried to help get a reduced sentence for some criminal charges but the man ended up being sentenced to death due to some damning evidence that involved his homosexuality it is also well known that wilde became very weak and sick from his time in prison to the point that his death can be blamed mostly on his prison sentence the point is acd personally saw at least 2 people he knew and respected go to prison and die because of their writings being used against them along with laws against homosexuality for more information on this other person acd knew and tried to help roger casement please read this post 2 it is stated in doyle s official biography that he had liberal views on homosexuality for his time what he has stated publicly is that he believed wilde should have been treated for his condition in a hospital instead of a prison medicalizing his homosexuality while today this is seen as a backwards view at the time it was progressive at any rate imagine that you are a doctor in 1895 and your friends are being sent to die in prison for being homosexual you might try to use your status as a doctor to get them sent to a hospital instead of a prison so they might at least have a chance of survival 2 in text we find a few different elements that can be suggestive of queer coding i will list some here one important one is the turkish baths mentioned twice in canon in lady and illu by the time that doyle was writing it was already known that turkish baths were a meeting place for homosexual men i m not going to give a long description of this but if you re interested you can look at the early gay bathhouses section of this wiki page for an introduction to the subject another is the nuances of the word bachelor and the associations that can be made with bachelor lodgings which is elaborated in this post it says in canon that holmes disliked and distrusted the sex in reference to women holmes has said now watson the fair sex is your department and holmes has also said i have never loved watson holmes says he he has never loved a woman but there are at least 3 times in canon where it is mentioned that holmes and watson love each other or where watson glimpses holmes s heart whether it s platonic love or not you can decide but the fact is women no love watson love i m referring to 3gar devi and dyin regardless of a johnlock interpretation it can be seen as significant that holmes remains a bachelor all his life and says that he has never loved because of course it would be difficult for a gay man to offer any other explanation without terrible legal and social consequences at that time there is a story 3stu where holmes and watson have to leave london due to a combination of events into which i need not enter this occurs in probably spring of 1895 what else occured in spring of 1895 widespread panic for queer people in london due to the trials of oscar wilde doyle s friend leading to increased awareness of queer people among the public and thus increased arrests of queer people holmes hates blackmailers i m too lazy pull up a canon quote to confirm this but it s an impression you get from the stories anyway at the time doyle was writing one of the arguments that people tried to make when it came to the legalization of homosexuality is that laws against homosexuality do nothing but hurt harmless people and line the pockets of blackmailers homosexuals were a common target for blackmailers to prey on here is a german film from 1919 that addresses this issue and also attempts to sympathetically portray a gay couple who falls victim to blackmailing this film became restricted from the general public but doctors were allowed to see it and remember that acd was a doctor i m not saying he saw the film necessarily just that doctors were probably more educated on the topic than most people there are other things i
