olaf s place olaf s place a place for optimum learning and fun pages home rambling thoughts my family yummies whats and whys monday february 6 2023 what is a testimony the year is 1964 a preacher stood at the front of the baptist church leading what is known as an alter call my friend nancy and i were sitting with her family not really listening to the preacher until he stopped the music and said if you love jesus you need to come forward that caught my attention i may have been only 6 years old but i knew one thing for sure i loved jesus he was my best friend and confidant i turned to nancy and said i love jesus she answered so do i i said well then we have to go up front holding each other s hand we made our way to the preacher he stood us on the front pew facing the congregation and began to ask us very confusing questions we just stared at each other and said nothing finally he asked us why we had come i knew the answer to this question and with a resounding i love jesus i bore my first testimony it was a simple one i didn t know what he meant by sins repentance or what being saved was all about but i knew positively that i loved jesus i still know that i may have had lots of oth e r questions about doctrine and the way the members of the church act but that first testimony of mine is unshakable posted by olaf aka vanessa white at 11 49 am tuesday july 20 2021 biopoem for 10th grade english every year the first assignment given to our 10th grade english students at ths is called a biopoem first we read the poem theme for english b by langston hughes and then after discussing at length what we learn about mr hughes from his writing students are instructed to write their own theme some years i write one as well but not every year today i am sharing the one i wrote a couple of years ago i have been reading a book my daughter tiffany suggested to me and it struck a chord with me that brought this theme of mine to mind at 63 years of age it is the best definition of me that i have ever come up with theme for english b bio page by vanessa white write a page that comes out of me then it will be true what if i have lived an awfully long time and still don t know who me is i have a lot of labels daughter mother wife teacher friend grandma woman and a few i ve been called i don t want to repeat those aren t me as a young child my favorite phrase was i do it myself which explains a big part of me don t ask for help show no weakness handle your own crap never let them see you cry i m not very good at the last one anymore i m not sure i ever was i m learning to overcome the others they don t show strength they are fallacies we often need help there is support when i am weak sometimes i need desperately for someone else to handle what is hitting the fan and crying in a chorus strengthens all involved as a fresh faced adult or that is what they told me i was i thought i had the truth figured out but years and associations with people who are different yet very much like me have taught me my truth may not be someone else s truth life is confusing now here i am a member of aarp living in a world of youth with more information than i ever wanted to have what do i know about me i am a daughter a mother a wife a teacher a friend a grandma a woman and sometimes a total b word i know from whence cometh my strength i know my family would kill for me and i for them but we would rather live for each other i know life is not fair but it is a good thing i have not gotten what i deserve i know lennon was wrong to say all we need is love been reading a lot lately about people who have felt with good reason marginalized in our society often they talk about tolerance or acceptance and demand that tolerance is not enough i want to say you don t need my tolerance you don t need my acceptance and you won t get them from me because that is not what you really need nor what i need to give what i need to give you and you need to give me is respect i have a poster of my expectations for the students in my classroom on the front bulletin board and one of those expectations is respect but with my definition respect is giving to every other human being every right that you claim for yourself i don t need to accept your life choices and you don t need to accept mine we simply need to give each other the right to live our lives according to the dictates of our own conscience i believe we should judge others with the same leniency we would like to be judged so for me that means i will judge you based on your treatment of other people are you kind to others are you supportive of others who need help do you try to look at things from the other person s perspective based on their experiences to do that final one we need to take an active interest in finding out about people who have experiences different from our own we need to examine our own biases i do not need or want your tolerance or acceptance and you won t get those from me you have my respect if i see you making an effort in your life to be respectful and kind to others you will also get my love and support i hope you will do the same for me let s start sending positive vibes into the world posted by olaf aka vanessa white at 8 21 am no comments friday september 4 2020 i am expendable i am expendable don t believe me just ask the alpine school board they sent high risk teachers back into classes with no way to socially distance they pretended they were putting precautions in place but it was laughable they let a student into the building without wearing a mask because i have no idea why they let that student in because the parent threatened a lawsuit and god knows money is more important than my health there is only a state mandate requiring it but by all means let s fold to the crazy mom who thinks she is above all laws especially moral ones i am expendable the state school board thinks so too they set no strong guidelines for the return to learn plans the governor thinks so there are no mask mandates for the state we will just believe that people will do the right thing ask people of color how that has worked out for them trickle down community morality the state legislature thinks so they have done absolutely nothing to address this pandemic i am expendable the purveyors of the only 6 of those who die had no underlying risk factors think so i am an acceptable loss being that i am in the 94 the fact that all my risk factors combined were not going to kill me for another 20 years doesn t matter i am expendable you have made it clear that i am so if i don t end up dying in this next two weeks while i go into quarantine get prepared to do without me i can t quit i need my health insurance and my salary to pay the bills i have 180 days of sick and personal leave so i don t have to walk into the building again for a long time until march 3 2021 to be precise i can do my lesson plans and ieps from home there are substitute teachers who can provide a physical presence in the classroom aren t there they can handle the classroom discipline they can do as good a job of helping my special needs students as i can right i am nothing more than a glorified babysitter right we had to come back to school with no modifications to the status quo because parents can t handle their own children and they need the state funded respite workers aka teachers someone else will sit and talk with my students who lose a family member to suicide someone else will sponsor my club so our lgbtq kids will have an advocate i am expendable i finally get the message silly me it has probably cost me my life but if not maybe i can find another way to make money to pay my bills i thought i was dedicating my life to teaching our future leaders but i have discovered i am really the only one who thinks that i am expendable there will always be someone else to take my place and do my job by the way i have a it happened i know because i have pictures looking back on my life i realize i don t remember a lot of things that i wish i did for example as i was watching good things utah today they were showing wedding cakes and i began to think about my own cake it was awesome i have pictures of it i remember what it tasted like i remember the joy it brought me what i can t remember is the name of my friend who made the cake for me scott and i worked with her at s m toys she had worked with her mother at a new york city bakery as a teenager and she was extremely talented she made the cake for us as her wedding gift to us she moved shortly after scott and i were married and we lost touch she was one of those work friends that just make a short appearance in your life and then you go on to your divergent lives still i wish i knew her name there are so many things like that memories i can picture but i don t recall when they happened or the names of many of the participants this is why i should have been keeping a journal but i haven t today i will begin sort of i will look through my pictures post them here with explanations and thus begin to track my memories here is my 2018 year in review my honey and i on my 60th birthday january 29 2018 my 60th birthday i took the day off work it was a monday so that is already scott s day off and we went for a drive just because we drove to the end of redwood road in slc basically and found bountiful pond after the walk around the lake and communing with the birds we returned to orem to have dinner at a new place for us at least antonella s cafe where we had a wonderful burger and picked up a mini cake for later finally the day ended with our return home where i found this balloon and box of chocolates from my dear friend silvina filippelli saturday february 3rd was an awesome day scott tiffany rachael and i went to the hits deep tour at vivint smart home arena the dumb thing is i didn t get any pictures of us well the truth is they closed the upper deck where our seats were and i began to have a bit of a meltdown total panic attack really because as i explained to the man i didn t care if they were offering me tickets that were better and higher priced in exchange for the ones i bought as i bought the ones i did so i would be on an isle not boxed in within a crowd of people where the panic attack i was having would be a mere trickle compared to the flood i would have after my starting to cry and hyperventilate another man came and handled the situation by giving us arena front row with an isle seat for me those reserved at half court for the miller family who would not be attending the concert it worked out great in the end but i m not sure if either of the girls got pictures of us for those who don t know who the miller family is they own the utah jazz who play in this particular arena the next big event was the roadshow concert featuring for king and country at the maverick center this time
