nto oldenhammer in toronto classic miniatures and games that use them saturday april 12 2025 painted miniatures for heart of the empire heart of the empire was the fifth expansion for star war imperial assault and was released in 2017 although at one point i was a goggle eyed fan of imperial assault by the time heart of the empire rolled around i was beginning to lose patience with the game and its maker fantasy flight games the pace of new miniatures and expansions had slowed and the announcement in 2017 of star wars legion made it clear that fantasy flight games was detaching from imperial assault the total lack of compatibility or transferability between the two games including the use of different scales for the miniatures was a nasty example of planned obsolescence by this point i was also realizing that there were better options if i wanted to paint star wars miniatures gorgeous 3d printed knock offs and repainted plastics from wizards of the coast were and still are a source for limitless characters from every era of the star wars universe all of this led to a sudden drop in enthusiasm for painting imperial assault figures something that i had once been nutty about all of which is to say it took me 7 years or so to finally getting around to painting the miniatures for heart of the empire and even then i did it less from love than completionism well enough of my salty reminiscences after all this isn t a guest post by geriatricus let s get on to the miniatures the biggest and most impressive miniature in heart of the empire is the at dp walker all terrain defence pods were introduced in star wars rebels as a garrison vehicle used for crowd control and counter insurgency i rather like this model since it derives from joe johnston s 1979 concept art for the empire strikes back heart of the empire also features four sentry droids these droids that like the at dp first appeared in star wars rebels further cementing the connection between that show and imperial assault who doesn t want more big bad robots then comes riot troopers god i hate these miniatures stormtroopers are supposed to be an elite and ruthless military force not police why would they be wasted on crowd control or given non lethal weapons why would they need riot shields when they re already wearing armour built to resist blaster fire and why do the riot shields have heat vents and access plates on the front none of it makes any sense the only unit for the mercenary faction is clawdite shapeshifter this is a character derived from one of the prequel movies which is an almost fatal impediment to me forming any attachment to it i did use spare parts to kitbash a couple of the clawdite shapeshifters into wasteland bounty hunters i think i like these better than the originals finally we arrive at the three rebel heroes contained in heart of the empire the heroes were always my favourite part of imperial assault but i have to say i found all three of these fellows a little disappointing first up is the conehead alien ko tun feralo he or she or they is or are an expert in logistics with all respect to the very important arm of the real military that is logistics i feel like we are beginning to scrape the bottom of the creative barrel when our space opera heroes specialize in acquiring and storing equipment i mean what second we have jarrod kelvin the obligatory wolverine knock off that games always generate when they run out of better ideas and finally we have drokkatta kudos for finally producing a female wookie and even better her name means drunk cat in icelandic at least according to google translate but why is she about to throw a grenade with her right hand when she s holding a gigantic grenade launcher in her left hand maybe this is painted miniatures for stargrave my recent enthusiasm for stargrave sparked me to paint some of the models produced by north star military figures i feel an affinity for north star partially because of their relationship with the sculptor mark copplestone a citadel alum whose work i love to paint and also because of north star s association with kevin dallimore whose excellent how to book helped me get back into the world of miniature painting 15 years ago i wish it were back in print so i could recommend it to my friends the miniatures that north star has produced for stargrave are first rate and there s a nice choice between plastic sprue sets and metal its a diverse range too with cyborgs dirty mercenaries and mystic warriors and yet they all have a unified vibe it s the vibe that really attracts me with its character driven sculpts accurate 28mm scale and seamless blend of grit pulp this is a range that fits in nicely with my beloved rt601 rogue trader adventurers i don t paint a lot of plastic miniatures but i found assembling north star s plastic sprue sets of crew mercenaries and troopers to be a relaxing pastime in itself i guess that s why people like model planes anyway here s the first fellow i did get around to painting and below is the second miniature i love the expression of panic aggression sculpted on his face i also picked up this north star rog113 big bot sculpted by mike owen this is pure pulp goodness stargrave allows you to include dogs in your crew of freebooters so i also tracked down some 3d printed robo dogs on etsy i m not very happy with either the sculpts or my very plain paintjob but i painted them when i had been away from my brushes for a few months and i needed a low stakes projects polishing off these guys helped rebuild my saturday march 1 2025 the crew of the ghost painted miniatures for imperial assault star wars rebels 2014 2018 remains one of the few treasures to be found in the rag and bone shop that is disney s star wars franchise rebels revisited and reamplified all the treasured themes of the original trilogy without becoming mawkish or repetitive as graeme virtue wrote at the guardian this is probably because the show borrowed so much from firefly shambolic heists an emphasis on wisecracks and the unplanned formation of a surrogate family star wars rebels is the firefly remake fans have been crying out for ever since joss whedon s space western got cancelled it took me four or five years longer than i planned but i ve finally painted all the miniatures for the crew of the ghost that were adult heroes who is not altogether exasperating indeed his occassional childishness is exactly what helps the other characters especially kanan and hera jell into a coherent family i ve always had a soft spot for kanan jarrus since when we first meet him he fits into my favourite sw roleplaying archetype the failed jedi sadly at least for me he seems to get his act together pretty quickly within the first season sabine wren is probably the reason i took so long to paint these figures i was always intimidated by portraying her hand painted armor and brightly dyed hair she was released in 2018 as part of the 11th wave ally pack with zeb orrelios no beat up starship is complete without an oversized and occasionally gruff alien in the case of the ghost this vital position is filled by zeb orrelios kudos to the sculptor for rendering the first miniature i ve ever seen in the process of cracking his knuckles very characterful faithful readers might remember seeing chopper and hera already they were released in 2017 and i wrote about them later that year but for completeness i m posting their pictures again chopper of course is just r2 d2 after four or five lines of colombian bob olley miniature for fans of his work one of the fabulous uncatalogued sanctioned psykers from the rogue trader era look at that head that half cape those high waisted pants i would love to have more information on this miniature but i can t get much out of the stuff of legends or the wiki for collecting citadel miniatures i m not sure of the year of production or whether it was released under the imprimatur of citadel or iron claw i am guessing that this sculpt is post 1988 because the model is carrying a regulation laspistol all of bob s other sculpts from 1987 1988 feature weapons that are well outside the standard wh40k formats which became more standardized as time went on if you dear reader have any insight into the provenance of this miniature i d love to hear from you in warhammer 40k we didn t use army lists or codices do you know what codices are the plural of codex the only codex we had was the codex vaticanus and it couldn t be clearer on the topic of kids these days take up a lament on the barren heights spake the prophet jeremiah for the lord has rejected and abandoned this generation no when we wanted to play 40k all we had was a copy of rogue trader you opened the cover and the spine shattered like it was held together with spittle and icing sugar scattering loose pages across the room gathering them up you were ready to assemble your army you just looked at your collection of miniatures and that was your force squats and marines and orks and space pirates all in one army no problem in the grim darkness of the future no one will bother with homogenous armies they re too busy rat fucking each other but our games were always fair unlike today nowadays kids die of heat exhaustion as they sprint to the gaming shop for the latest army list hoping to outdo each other in an endless arms race we lived in a more evenhanded time we just eyeballed each miniature and assigned him the equipment he appeared to be carrying if it just so happened that all my marines were carrying laser cannons and all your guardsmen were carrying stub pistols that was just the way it had to be it was fair the same way that getting t boned by a cement truck is fair no one ever cried because games workshop stopped supporting their army of choice boo hoo i can t bring my bretonnians to tournaments anymore jesus burger flipping christ we didn t have tournaments at all it was ludicrous to imagine playing warhammer out in the open against strangers in public in the halcyon days of my youth warhammer was something that you were ashamed of you hid away in dank basements in the dark playing with like minded people with whom otherwise you wouldn t be caught dead the stigma was what made it fun but all that s gone now you had to make it popular you had to have a net flicks and now there are no more space pirates yours is truly a generation of swine disengage protocol_geriatricus_maximus end transmission sorry for the guest post that guy is a real downer i ve got to stop letting him take over the blog here are the final 7 miniatures from bob olley s ic301 space pirates 1987 from the golden age of warhammer 40k rogue trader one of the many things i love about this range is olley s choice to portray several old and apparently cranky men a prime example of men well past their prime is pop stewart he s balding he s pouchy and he s ready to kick ass this range of space pirates is apparently led by captain dunbar he s bucktoothed and dressed in a onesie but he is carrying a rather large gun the face on attitude gorman is the distilled essence of bob olley s sculpting style with his beaked nose recessed eyes and gaping grin he reminds me of one of da vinci s groteques nixan is an equally strange miniature we it not for the gun he would look like a b list superhero called torpedo man for another stumpy and bearded oldster may i present little rigo another splendid example of olley s skill at creating uniquely grotesque people we have psycho he s like what rambo would be if rambo had a dyed blond perm pimples and a girdle i especially enjoy the fact that unlike almost all citadel miniatures he s not wearing boots but has instead chosen a sensible pair of orthopedic sneakers and finally the oldest and crustiest space pirate of them all dambo kweltz you can almost hear the clack of his dentures smell his eucalyptus chest ointment and feel the tremor in his hands as he tries to aim his archaic weapons you get em gramps well my friends i hope you ve enjoyed this tour through bob olley s masterpieces i certainly we learned that eldar orks humans and even squats engaged in piracy that tome also provides a splendid army list for a pirate band crangor s buccaneers which allows the player to assemble a band including squat ensigns eldar void dreamers and recce squads on flying surfboards aka power boards rogue trader had to include space pirates there wasn t a sci fi trope that rogue trader didn t include and space pirates have been an integral part of space opera since ray cumming s brigands of the moon 1931 or buck rogers battling black barney 1939 leaving out space pirates would be like leaving out laser guns of course there are space pirates and then are space pirates some versions rely on high camp with parrots cutlasses and cornish accents and some are a little more normal i e violent criminals with a spaceship bob olley s version is somewhere in the middle both eccentric and scary personally i think his version of space pirates owes a special debt to doctor who colourful yet menacing space pirates loom large in meglos 1980 and the pirate planet 1978 not to mention the incomplete serial the space pirate...
