anne while the reasons for vetoing any given baby name vary from person to person e g wanting to avoid certain initials bad memories of a bully with that name there are some reasons that just seem motivated by the wrong priorities 1 your child won t be able to find it on any mugs drinking glasses christmas ornaments necklaces t shirts etc not everyone wants souvenirs with their name on it for all you know your child might dislike their name and not want to be reminded of it with a shirt or necklace even if your child does like his or her name and enjoys souvenirs with it that s not really the most pressing reason i can think of to veto a name 2 it ll take too long to learn how to spell research has shown that children with long names or names with non intuitive pronunciations often learn to spell faster and better than their peers the world would be a very boring place if we all had short names plus what child wouldn t feel proud of oneself for learning to spell a name like persephone anastasia francesco or akeakamai 3 you love the name but you re upset by recent massive popularity i know this sucks when you ve genuinely loved a name and planned to use it for years but does sudden trendiness cancel out how much that name means to you i hate how theodore is now 4 and samuel is 18 in the u s but those names have never been out of the top 100 since name records began in 1880 and because of how many more names are being given now it may be possible your child won t have the experience of sharing that name with 100 other kids at school just look at the percentage used versus the actual ranking even many high charting names are given to less than 1 of babies or barely over 1 unless trends change we probably won t soon return to a world where every other person will feel about their name i for example have always far preferred my middle name ursula and found my first name anna the epitome of boring your child might resent having to be known as e g jack david h emma rose williams on main street catherine with a c or tall liam all through school and long for a more uncommon name meanwhile florian and morwenna might adore their unusual names and standing out nakashima might sound mismatched we live in a world of cultural osmosis if i used a russian name it would be because i ve been a passionate russophile for over 33 years and i have great love for their culture history and language it wouldn t be because i randomly saw a russian name and decided it was cool if you re going to use a name from another culture it should be done with respect instead of regarding it as an exotic token e g people who named their sons cohen because of the o c without caring about the religious significance of the kohanim high priests in judaism 9 it s too foreign i m sorry if you were bullied for having a name like yumiko or zvonimir or if you re sick to the back teeth of constantly having to correct people s pronunciation or spelling but that s no reason to act like it s still 1900 and whitewash yourself to pretend your native culture never existed and why should we name children based on some people s ignorance and refusal to learn how to pronounce non
