paddy wagon cocktail lounge skip to main skip to sidebar the musings observations and travels of a golden era inspired irishman i ll build a stairway to paradise with a new step every day saturday 8 december 2012 william bill hart 1924 2012 sadly after a long illness my step father william hart 1924 2012 passed away in his sleep at 6am in belfast today december 7 to say that he was a very kind honourable selfless and giving gentleman of the old school hardly does him justice partial to a drop of black bush either in the glass or his porridge along with his favoured buttermilk and his morning daily mail he enjoyed life with his meals out good wine good company travels to various parts of the world cruises his monthly meetings of former colleagues at the dinosaur club and when he was able his bowls bill enjoyed my homecomings to ireland probably because it was an excuse to have an ulster fry for breakfast and have someone to share in a guinness in the evening but the craic was always good and he would often regale me with a story from his childhood or younger days working on the tyne and living in northumberland in england as a young engineer in the 30 s from the northeast of england northumberland he would cycle the 20 miles to work down on the river tyne clarke chapmans to do a full day s work before cycling home again i remember his telling me of working on new types of torpedos for the royal navy at the isle of skye during wwii then later moving to belfast to develop and build the landing craft that would be involved in the then anticipated full scale military invasion of imperial japan and its islands which subsequently never happened he then worked at sirocco works in belfast developing installing turbines for air conditioning for such places at london underground and the qeii to mention a few a member of the arts club in belfast and knock belmont bowling clubs his easy manner and welcoming handshake won him many friends over the 88 years of his lifetime never to be seen outside the house without a jacket tie and trilby he was the consummate old school who cut a dash wherever he ventured he will be very much missed by his friends and families and leaves a great chasm of emptiness in the lives of those who knew and loved him and had the privilidge of being touched by the sincerity of this gentle giant of a gentleman from cramlington but he also has left a lasting warm glow in the beating hearts of those of us who were lucky enough to be a part of this lovely man s life stop all the clocks cut off the telephone prevent the dog from barking with a juicy bone silence the pianos and with muffled drum bring out the coffin let the mourners come let aeroplanes circle moaning overhead scribbling on the sky the message he is dead put crepe bows round the white necks of the public doves let the traffic policemen wear black cotton gloves wh auden posted by paddy at 09 53 no comments saturday 26 november 2011 bunny is closing the lettuce leaf pages when rabbit said honey or condensed milk with your bread he was so excited that he said both and then so as not to seem greedy he added but don t bother about the bread please aa milne my wanting to sit in front of a computer like this has drifted diminished over the past few months will continue to do so by the looks of things so i m making a late apology to any readers out there in the ether to my lack of interest in this medium to date and have decided just to round things up with this particular diary entry both lack of time and desire are the overiding factors posted by paddy at 12 20 3 comments friday 22 july 2011 reading and thinking of writing an online forum that i frequent occasionally has an ongoing piece entitled are you a writer my answer privately is i used to be as i once many moons and hats ago made a living out of writing as a news reporter nothing grand no one famous just one of the many minions of journalists beavering away at local and regional level newspapers my current field of work has nothing in common with journalism and writing and because of that a core part of me has become stale so any skills i might have had now lie buried and rusting inside of me and i daresay the key is seized inside the lock to the door of that room sadly c est la vie the work i do is valuable i m told by my seniors that i m very good at it so i would never belittle the importance of my professional work and the rewards of it but there is a sadness that a gift if that s too arrogant a word then it wasn t meant to be really has been squandered or never pushed to its full potential on a positive note i still have a passion for reading which has never left me since i popped from a baby pod with a comic in my mouth i m an avid little worm and drill a million holes through the pages of books as i eagerly burrow my way through them tasting the lives zest and imaginations of others devouring them with a hungry mind and then like a biblical plague of locust i fly onto the next crop it s wonderful to be able to lose yourself in the minds creations and world s of others just by simply opening a page so over the next week i m off to the sticks up in the frozen north to a cabin by a lake with books damp dogs sweaty paws a few cigars mister pino grigio a couple of chosen rods flies and watch the bunnies have lettuce pillow fights as a summer sun bleeds its colours across the water and greets the night posted by paddy at 17 35 3 comments tuesday 19 july 2011 aliens just lurv your underpants my little great nephew because actually he is a great little fellow was subjected to aliens trying to pinch his underpants whatever next if you have the chance to get this book then please do as it s a rivetting read and if you can beg borrow or whatever your friend s little child to read to then i d highly recommend this one of course great uncle p here had to get into the character role being the proper twat of an uncle that he is and magically transformed into his version of an alien on the hunt for underpants just look at that little cherub face the poor little fella has been traumatised posted by paddy at 15 32 1 comment a brief visit to ireland had a nice time in ireland just visiting family being with friends i hardly ever see now walking around places that mean little to others but are significant to me and help conjur up memories of times past and people long gone sadly my father s shop is still there but only the ghosts of those i remember working there remain he s gone over 20 years now and my grandparent s house that pa built in the early 1920 s and they moved into after marrying still stands they have departed an even longer time ago yet i feel myself welling up even as i type this inanimate objects that we associate with someone else like my dad s tie or my grandparent s house allows us to focus and bring to life those people and happy memories that mean so much to us the memory of them only hurts so soooo much because they are so memorable and special to us special people those that you love never really leave you they always dwell within you right the next post will be a less reflective and a happier one promise posted by paddy at 15 17 3 comments friday 20 may 2011 vintage fly in takes paddy to cloud nine it s that time of the year again when the old dust sheets come off the wonderful collection of vintage aircraft of the shuttleworth collection in bedfordshire england this little 1930 s grass aerodrome is tucked away down leafy country lanes away from the modern bustle and hustle of 21st century living that s why i like it so much run mostly by volunteers the planes are piloted by former or currently serving military aircrew and the mechanics have training in aero mechanice etc this is a gem of a place if you love vintage aircraft of the early 20th c named after richard shuttleworth a young man who lived to get his hands greasy racing motorcars motorbikes and planes in the inter war period when great britain went to war in 39 he immediately joined up with the raf sadly though an experienced pilot already he died during a night time training exercise when his aircraft ploughed into a mountain side his grieving mother felt it would be a fine memorial to her much loved son if she set up a trust and a collection in his name today this is the shuttleworth collection where you can see his cars planes trophys that he won etc plus all the other aircraft that have been collected since his death from tiger moths to hurricanes now that spring summer is here they have periodic events such as the evening fly in which i attended the other weekend you can bring a bottle of shampoo and nibbles with you lay out your picnic blanket get all dolled up and enjoy the show highly recommended so take a look at their events on their website chocks away just a few photos of the people at the event can you spot anyone famous posted by paddy at 10 38 1
