30 2025 december 29 2025 4 minutes rob butler time well spent you ve probably realised why i ve called you in today yes i assume it s my intelligent life experiment indeed i ve been asked to take over supervision of this one and it has had rather a chequered history hasn t it well looking back over your past reports i see you found a suitable planet quite quickly and were successful in setting off a natural chemical reaction to get life going yes that was a huge milestone passed but nothing then happened for over three and a half thousand million years not exactly we had a lot of bacteria hardly intelligence no but you then instigated a series of massive volcanic eruptions to try and kick start new forms of life which succeeded and which cost a hell of a lot of money there s not an unlimited budget on this project you know no i appreciate that but we have had very promising results following the latest of those eruptions with species we ve called dinosaurs perhaps too promising from what i m hearing well yes they have been so successful that they ve taken over pretty much the whole planet and they re not intelligent no so i gather you have a revised scheme yes there are new species appearing we ve called mammals which look reasonably promising as regards acquiring some form of intelligence at some point in the future here s a picture of one hmmm very small and furry i m not sure we should show this picture to the accountants no probably not a good idea so what is this scheme of yours to promote these mammals well at the moment they can t get any sort of a foothold because of the dinosaurs so we need to wipe them out the dinosaurs yes you re certainly not averse to mass extinctions in this project are you it s quite a bloody affair well we re trying to work out how intelligent life started so we ll get a better idea of how we got here we ve got to try everything we can yes yes i know the sales pitch it s very worthy and inspirational i m sure so how are you going to wipe them out it ll be a bit tricky i imagine i could replace the word tricky with expensive yes probably we re thinking of an asteroid event here s the suggested impact site on this map the initial heat wave will kill off a lot of the dinosaurs at once but if we can land in exactly the right area then we can get huge amounts of sulphates thrown high into the atmosphere which will block out all the sunlight for a considerable time and that will kill off the rest it should do all the vegetation will die off so any remaining dinosaurs will have nothing to eat however the mammals will survive the initial heat better in their underground burrows and will be able to hold out until the sunlight returns by eating insects and seeds hmm and when you say we need to hit exactly the right area how exact do you mean spot on if it comes in a few seconds too early or a few seconds too late it will hit deep water in the oceans either side of the site and we won t get the desired effect well this is all becoming so contrived i m not sure it s going to tell us anything about how we came into existence still we ve come this far so we may as well try it i ll have a word with the girls and boys in celestial mechanics to see if they can find a suitable asteroid and work out changes to its orbit it ll give them something to do they ve been largely twiddling their thumbs since they
