somewhere i will use the text to produce an image its an experiment in image making and exploring the limits of language this image is based entirely on this text it is not a place that i have ever visited across the road there is a grass rectangle with three large old oak trees one is to the left another directly opposite me and third to the right their branches criss cross each other and there is no foliage behind the trees on the opposite side of the grass is a row of two storey terraced houses their rooves grey tiled their front doors are to the right of the first storey large windows with a windowsill to the left on top of a small brick foundation layer between the first and second storeys is a layer of bricks half the width of a storey each house has a front garden the width of the house and about 5 metres in length a footpath runs between the edge of the grass rectangle and along the foot of each garden c s if you are interested in participating in this project and sending drawing landscape painting sketchbook travel watercolour 2 comments march 21 2026 places i ve never been to a language and drawing project an image based entirely on this text it is not a place that i have ever visited i am on a hilltop it s early autumn and everything in the immediate foreground is bathed in a lemon yellow hue looking past a spread of olive trees and lemon trees my eye travels across the undulating geography where a mosaic of vineyards and olive groves punctuates the hillsides beyond a copse of cypress trees that stand like sentinels in the valley before them distant blocks of flat rooftops and tiny houses interrupt the thick vegetation the cypresses recur at various points across the landscape and i trust their diminishing height to give me clues to the measure of distance i am observing the shoulders of the most distant hills framing the view and colliding with a clear afternoon sky are dark almost brooding and vegetated giving the impression that the forests growing there have been undisturbed for centuries and are probably impassible by foot c w having drawn this i feel some parts could easily be approached in a different way resulting in really quite a different drawing i also find myself thinking about albrecht dürer and his rhinoceros woodblock print made in 1515 he made it having never having seen a rhino for himself and relying very much on the stories and reports of others to inform him it is a starnge way to work but interesting non the less if you are interested in participating in this project click here for information on how to join in uncategorized tagged art description drawing language project 1 comment march 20 2026 places i ve never been to a language and drawing project i like to draw and i m interested in language both images and what we say or write can communicate things about a place a landscape an environment or just the view out of the window i want to try and bring a few of these things together in a language and drawing project that i want to give a home on my blog whenever i travel i take my drawing book with me i draw and paint the places i find myself visiting i have often shared some of these images online but for this project i am interested in exploring in drawings places i ve never been to i want to do this by creating drawings that have been made through the filter of language i am hoping to find people through the blog who would be interested in describing a place sending me the text and then letting me draw simply on the basis of the text and nothing else to be honest i ve no idea how easy or how difficult i m going to find this but i am certainly very interested to give it a serious go working through the filter of language and a not overly extensive length of text the idea is never going to be to make a perfect view of the place involved this will very definitely be an interpretive process to help the flow of the project i want to make a few clear criteria 1 the text should be between 100 and 200 words long not longer or shorter let us see if that gives me enough material to work with 2 my preference would be for the text to be written in english or dutch but in principle other languages are possible although they would have to be run through an online translator before i get down to work 3 the text should describe an exterior space a landscape an urban view a park or garden a beach etc 4 do not under any circumstances include a reference to the place you are describing i want to work simply from the text not from my own prior knowledge of the place 5 the place you choose to describe could be a place where you can literally sit in the landscape to write the description it could equally be a place that you know very well and are able to describe from memory you may write about a place you have visited and use a photograph taken whilst traveling to help the descriptive process it could equally be just a view out of the kitchen window a few tips to bear in mind to help me a little be specific about what you can see clearly described details will certainly help me description of the atmosphere or mood of the place may well be relevant and useful a maximum of 200 hundred words isn t so many so don t waste them of being too vague reference to the colours of the landscape may well prompt me to get my paints out although i can t promise to oh yes please don t send me ai texts i may spot them i may not but it does rather defeat the whole point of the project time will tell if this project has the scope to actually work will i get enough contributions will i get too many will i actually be able to make some reasonable drawings who knows but i ll give it a go my intention is to make small scale works on paper don t expect fully worked out paintings if you are interested in participating all you have to do is write your description and send it to me using the contact me link on the blog under the trees picture above simply paste the text into the message space and it will be emailed through to me i ll publish successful drawings on the blog along with the text anonymously posted alongside the image thanks for participating if you choose to send something let s see where this goes share this tweet email a link to a friend opens in new window email share on tumblr more share on whatsapp opens in new window whatsapp print opens
