également le public néerlandais au rythme ensorcelant de la rumba congolaise lors d une représentation dans la ville d hilversum aux pays bas mais rien de tout cela n égala ce qui se produisit en france une association d étudiants étrangers la fondation d outre mer engagea l orchestre pour jouer pendant deux soirées à paris selon les propos tenus par le grand kallé et vicky longomba lors d une interview publiée le 9 mai 1960 dans actualités africaines le plaisir et les talents de danseurs des spectateurs rendirent ces concerts particulièrement mémorables pour le groupe grand kallé non seulement nous y avons connu le plus grand succès de notre carrière mais aussi nous y avons rencontré les meilleurs danseurs du monde au premier bal la plupart de l assistance savait à peine esquisser les pas d une rumba allez les voir maintenant ils la dansent avec une élégance et une perfection que maître taureau en personne en serait jaloux vicky longomba le premier bal de la table ronde à bruxelles m a beaucoup impressionné mais il est incontestable que les deux bals de paris resteront toujours gravés dans ma mémoire très vite et sans l avoir cherché l african jazz vit se former autour de lui un groupe de fans passionnés qui l attendait dans tous les lieux où il se produisait petit pierre se souvient que certains d entre eux allèrent jusqu à louer des autocars pour suivre l orchestre dans ses déplacements roger izeidi and docteur nico in hotel plaza brussels chaque membre du groupe était en quelque sorte devenu une célébrité petit pierre impressionnait tout le monde par son talent et sa jeunesse il avait à peine dix huit ans brazzos dirigeait infailliblement la section rythmique depuis sa contrebasse il donnait l impression de jouer de cet instrument depuis de nombreuses années mais en réalité il ne l avait jamais touché auparavant à leur arrivée à bruxelles les membres de l ensemble se rendirent compte qu ils avaient deux guitaristes rythmiques dechaud et brazzos mais pas de contrebassiste brazzos qui avait été témoin de l incroyable synergie entre les frères nicolas kabamba wa kasanda docteur nico et charles mwamba wa kabamba dechaud à la guitare décida de troquer la guitare rythmique contre la contrebasse il apprit à jouer de cet instrument en moins de trois jours roger izeidi faisait sensation en secouant ses maracas avec une énergie contagieuse pendant qu il apprenait au public à faire le cha cha cha vicky longomba conquit les auditeurs avec sa voix de ténor veloutée et élégante le grand kallé enchanta tout le monde par sa voix aiguë sa passion son charisme et son sens infaillible du rythme mais le musicien qui vola véritablement la vedette et laissa les spectateurs européens sans voix est le docteur nico chaque fois que ses doigts faisaient résonner une note sur sa guitare les auditeurs se demandaient où l on avait caché le pianiste avant de se rendre compte avec stupeur que ces mélodies entraînantes sortaient de la guitare du docteur nico ils n en croyaient pas leurs oreilles nico kasanda acquit son surnom de docteur lors d une interview à la radio lorsque l animateur lui lança qu il était si doué pour la guitare qu il faisait penser à un médecin réalisant une opération délicate le financement de la tournée spectaculaire de l african jazz en europe par l agence de publicité africaine est confirmé par une série d activités promotionnelles dans le programme des artistes ainsi l orchestre au grand complet visita le célèbre martini club à bruxelles où il posa pour la presse ils se rendirent également à l usine de pâtes soubry et déjeunèrent avec les propriétaires de l entreprise un point important à souligner est l absence de preuves concernant un concert qui aurait été donné par l african jazz au palais des congrès de bruxelles où se déroulait la table ronde bien que cette conviction soit très répandue parmi les musiciens et amateurs de rumba congolaise il s agit manifestement d une confusion née de l érosion de nos souvenirs même les plus chers avec le passage du temps cette tournée européenne de trois mois parut bien longue aux musiciens leur patrie leur manquait mais fut en réalité trop courte pour pouvoir récolter tous les fruits de leur triomphe l african jazz avait reçu des invitations pour se produire en allemagne en italie et en union soviétique mais il n eut pas le temps de se grands galas à l hôtel plaza le 22 avril 1960 il joua au bal de la table ronde pour célébrer la fin des négociations politiques une semaine plus tard le 27 avril l orchestre donna son dernier concert en europe où il fit ses adieux à ses plus fidèles admirateurs ce gala fut annoncé comme le bal du journal congo ou bal d adieu de l african jazz grand kallé partout on voulait bien croire que nous venions du congo mais non pas que nous étions capables de faire de la musique aussi impressionnante nous avons confirmé dans une certaine mesure aux autres nations que le congo était à l âge de jouir de son indépendance quelques semaines avant de quitter l europe l african jazz réussit à faire un enregistrement studio d indépendance cha cha ils engagèrent une société française pour reproduire des centaines de copies de 45 tours et les envoyer à léopoldville le grand kallé voulait que ses compatriotes au congo puissent entendre au plus vite la chanson qui apportait la bonne nouvelle de l indépendance les disques arrivèrent à léopoldville et furent distribués dans plusieurs magasins de disques et stations de radio jean lema animateur et superviseur à la radio congo belge reçut l enregistrement et s assura que la chanson soit diffusée avant le début de chaque programme lorsque l african jazz débarqua au congo une foule de fans enthousiastes l accueillit avec des hourras à l aéroport de léopoldville si les politiciens ramenèrent dans leurs valises l indépendance au congo l african jazz avait transformé celle ci comme par magie en une chanson joyeuse sur laquelle tout le included some important parts of the back catalogue of the label there is still a large part of the repertoire of surboum african jazz that remains completely hidden from the fans that s why planet ilunga associated with the children of joseph kabasele tshamala grand kallé and catherine ingombo kale kato to compile 29 songs that were originally released on the label in the early sixties label owner grand kallé alias joseph kabasele the best singer of all time surboum african jazz is the first congolese music label founded by a congolese it was owned and managed by the best singer of all time joseph kabasele alias grand kallé the recordings mainly happened in brussels belgium the label s catalog during the period 1960 63 is largely dominated by grand kallé s band african jazz in its various formations the band which could rely in 1961 and 1962 on a real dream team of musicians docteur nico dechaud rochereau manu dibango roger izeidi and mujos among others released in this period at least 212 songs the second largest source of music for the label is franco s band o k jazz with at least 136 released songs next with at least 34 released songs comes manu dibango with his different formations these were the first ever published songs of the late manu dibango for this compilation we chose an original selection of songs recorded by african jazz in 1961 and 1962 we also included a few songs of dibango s bands in the final selection in order to showcase the diversity and universal philosophy of grand kallé s label indépendance cha cha aj 1 the start of an editorial band released dozens of boleros with beautiful compositions mainly by franco and vicky and occasionally from kwamy edo simarro and mujos among others the slow form of the bolero allowed franco who said in various interviews that he loved all forms of slow music to express his most profound soul stirrings and create a style of his own with the suave voice of vicky and the breathtaking and
