kly went into the change management application to close out the ticket and as my fingers hung over my home row keys on the keyboard i looked at the ticket and i began to wonder what would happen if i didn t close this ticket i had already been dinged for leaving the ticket open past the due date what happens if i just keep this ticket open i decided the best course of action was to keep the ticket open and find out i could always claim that i forgot all about it a quick side story when i was 13 years old the radio station ktgr during the summer in columbia missouri would have a contest every hour where they would give away a prize if you were the 5th caller or whatever number there were these two sisters that would almost always win even though i would run in the house every hour and start dialing away as fast as i could i would rarely win i had to wait until 3 in the morning when everyone was asleep before i had a chance to win i couldn t figure out how these two girls would win the majority of the time then it occurred to me what if they don t hang up what happens so i tried it when i knew it was time for the contest to begin before the dj announced it i dialed the number and let it ring while he was talking then the dj answered the phone and said you are the first caller please hang up and try again well this time i didn t hang up a moment later the dj picked up the phone again and said you are the second caller please hang up and try again imagine my elation after that i won my share of prizes so i wondered about keeping the change ticket open end of side story so the next time i had a change to make in kronos i didn t create a new ticket i just figured that i already had a change ticket open so i might as well use it again to make a long story short for the next two years i didn t create another change ticket for any kronos changes whenever something popped up with the database administrator that i had added a table to the database or a field to a table they would call me because they could see that i was the user that had done it they would ask me do you have a change ticket for this change i would say yes and the change ticket number is 001677323 they would say thanks and were satisfied as long as i had an open change ticket they were good in that time no one ever opened the ticket and looked close enough to see that the change ticket was for a long time ago after contacting me over and over the dbas and server people finally quit calling me they must have thought that kevin breazile he always has change tickets then in 2009 something else happened we had to move our expense reporting system concur from an in house application to the concur cloud we had to do this in the next 6 months by the time i was able to start developing it i had 4 months to create 63 interfaces and test them i was the only developer because at that point i was the only one that understood what needed to be done these were financial interfaces that had to be encrypted some sent files to credit card companies some received files from credit card companies others went to various payroll departments all over the world some imported data from hr a few years earlier when i was in finance i remember that a couple of guys had created a framework that would handle the creation of interfaces so that they could easily be scheduled and trouble tickets could be created if there was an issue with them so i asked john larrison and joe dimaggio yes i worked with joe dimaggio no he didn t play baseball i think both of them were geniuses here is a picture of john and joe john larrison joe dimaggio i decided i would use this framework to create the interfaces while i was doing this i decided that i would create the code that would make creating interfaces more automated by just describing the interface in the parameters built in the framework i know this is boring to non it people so i ll make this short essentially once i created the program that i wanted to run i could use that same code to run every interface that was described in the framework so i only had to create the code once and it would run any interface i could imagine i could import any file format imaginable and i could pull data from the database and create any file format so within two weeks after i had that code working i had created all of the interfaces and was ready to test them in the process of doing this i didn t have to put any new code into production i could just tell the program what i wanted and it would create it for me so if i wanted a new stored procedure in the database or a table etc i just had to tell my program to create it after i did this i received a call from the database administrator asking me about some new tables and stored procedures that had been created in the database he wondered if i knew who created them because it wasn t me it was the service account that ran the interface application i told him the concur interface application created those tables he replied with excitement in his voice what those can t be created without a change ticket i replied well the application is designed to do that when it finds it needs a new table it creates it can i help it if the application works that way actually i could since i wrote it yeah being rotten again after that i no longer had to write a change ticket for both kronos and concur and no one questioned it during the last 4 years i worked at dell i became the application owner for all of the corporate applications at dell except for the hr apps and the security apps i was responsible for over 40 different applications at that time in those last 4 years no one ever questioned me about having the correct change ticket nothing ever went wrong because i was the one that knew what needed to be done and if something did go wrong i was the one to quickly fix it finally i had reached the level of trust with the teams at dell that monitored changes that i had with the shift supervisor at the power plant on the first day i joined the electric shop and started working on equipment worth thousands of dollars and with enough potential to kill me if i did anything wrong i could say a lot more about change management but i may save that for another post about the time i was at general motors well ok i ll say one more thing about when i was at general motors i ll make this short when i first arrived at general motors i found out that my twin brother was on the kronos team with me my twin brother srini subramaniam he was the kronos architect i was the software engineer we sat together in a bullpen cube that could seat 4 people i will go in more detail later but we arranged for srini to approve change tickets so srini would write a change ticket and have me submit it on my computer then he would go to his computer about six feet away and approve it then voila we would make the change within minutes of the ticket being created one day we had a call from the senior application support person bruce darga he said there appears to be something wrong what are you guys doing how can you create a ticket and have it approved two minutes later i replied to during the second summer working at the power plant as a summer help on july 15 1980 stanley elmore asked me to get with ray butler to go help straighten out the warehouse ray butler s grave site after ray butler certified kerry lewallen and me on the forklift we began rearranging the pallets in the warehouse since this was before any shelves had been erected kerry lewallen many years later the entire warehouse was just a big empty space with pallets of parts randomly placed throughout the large building this was my first experience working in a warehouse after being a dell for only one month my manager jim mosher assigned me to a small project where i created an application that showed the business how the data at dell came from manufacturing and finance and corporate databases and ended up in a place they called the data warehouse then it showed how the data from the data warehouse was distributed to other databases they called data marts these data marts were used by different applications that were used by our business partners at the power plant we had the main warehouse that fed parts over to the tool room at dell they had the main data warehouse that fed the data over to data marts ok i could see the similarities nine months after i had joined dell my manager at the time sam daniels told me that i was going to be loaned to the data warehouse team they had a major problem and they needed to do something quickly here was the issue there were database jobs that were run on the data warehouse each week to process all the data into and out of the data warehouse and because the company had grown so big it was taking all week to run all the jobs that needed to be run each week we were literally running out of minutes in the week to process all the data before all that processing had to start all over again the dell data warehouse ddw was on oracle databases the jobs that ran all week had to transform the raw data into useful information in order to do this a lot of calculations had to be performed on the data through a myriad of steps in order for the data to have any meaning oracle was good at doing this but because it had to use so many different functions it wasn t very efficient so the company was going to change to a database by a company called teradata teradata databases were fast really fast if we were successful we could shorten the time it took to run the jobs from a week down to two days that would mean that the jobs could run over the weekend and by monday morning everyone would be happy because they would have all the information about how well dell sold computers the previous week think of it this way when kerry lewallen and i first walked into the warehouse at the power plant all the parts were placed on pallets randomly placed around the entire warehouse if you wanted a particular part you had to roam around looking at all the parts until you found the one you wanted after the storage racks were built and each part had a particular location then you could go straight to the part you wanted without looking around when i learned that in a months time i would be going down to parmer south 1 to work with the data warehouse team i knew just like i had to be certified to drive the forklift in order to work in the warehouse this time i needed to learn the language used by the teradata database as well as the oracle database language these languages are called sql or structured query language teradata used a basic sql language that was somewhat different than oracle so i had to understand this difference i went to some oracle training classes and at the same time i read the manual on teradata sql which was very close to standard sql which is also called ansi sql by the beginning of july 2002 i temporarily moved with marvin agosto from our team to the parmer south 1 building 8 miles away in a sense he was my new kerry lewallen marvin agosto we spend the next five months working to convert our area of the data warehouse over to teradata we were placed on a team with the manager dean crutchfield dean crutchfield s linkedin photo marvin and i worked under a team lead who managed us he was murthy kunala murthy kunala s linkedin photo the reason the teradata databases are so fast is because it doesn t let you use anything but basic sql statements no functions no procedures the oracles jobs were full of functions that had functions inside functions that had functions inside them we had to study each of the jobs and understand what was actually happening in these oracle jobs before we could begin to translate them into simple sql statements teradata also insisted that the statements had to be simple otherwise they would fail and give you an out of temp space error overall what this did was that it taught me how to create simple sql statements to do complex things that ran very fast i didn t know it at the time but this gave me the tools to quickly create huge sql statements for other applications that looked complicated but ran very fast in the future when i was working on different applications one amazing thing i learned when i was looking at the data we used to calculate our ship to target stt metrics was that there were all these strange records in the database that at first glance didn t make sense to me i was looking at the data that we had for each computer that was ordered and there seemed to be about 100 records for one computer that had timestamps on them that were milliseconds apart i wasn t sure what to make of all these records in this huge table i think it was murthy who told me that as the parts in the factory for a computer goes down the conveyor system to the person assembling it and then down to where the software is loaded and the system is tested then goes to be boxed and shipped each time it passes a scanner it logs the computers progress so it seemed as if there were about 100 points from the time the parts came off of the truck to the moment the computer was put into a fedex for ups truck where we had a record of its progress this was mind boggling to me but it allowed us to track the progress of the building of a computer through every step of being assembled and shipped after this project when i needed to create a new sql job i would just turn on my ipod with some music and start typing and i could write sql queries that were hundreds of lines long as if i was writing a novel i found that if i did this even in oracle the jobs would run a lot faster than if i wrote shorter code using functions and inline queries etc anyway i digress from the main story well one short side story to illustrate this point about 3 year after i finished working with the data warehouse team when i was sitting in my cube working on something stephen todd asked me to come over to his desk to help him and carol lockley look at an issue they had with a sql query that was running in oracle financials development instance it was taking a long time to run stephen todd it ran just fine when they ran it on one record but when they ran the full job which returned around 450 000 records it seemed to be
