split into three subfamilies please please display and please poster each comes with its own default character set giving every style its own distinct flavor standard display poster three tones one sometimes a single letter is enough to get the ball rolling a sketch turns into an idea that develops into a moment when i think yeah that could be something please started this way and i happily ran with the idea while experimenting with extremely heavy weights i noticed how the double story a starts to close up its counters filling in as the weight increases to keep them open you end up compensating everywhere it s just the nature of the double story form so i thought what if i merge them would it still read would it still be an a did it matter if it looked cool that single counter version became the pulse of please go on brush your shoulders off another instance of please doing what it wants is the design of the lowercase m this design again stems no pun intended from exploring the heavy structure of the form rather than the design having two shoulders as is typically expected please explored what would happen if the form took on a single shoulder version i expect to get a my fair share of pushback on this design decision that s ok i do as i please a different default the proportions throughout the family don t act as you may expect rather than building various widths the please family adapts as it grows in weight so while the light styles in the standard and display are closer to condensed by the time you get to the heavy weight they feel a bit more traditional although still compact letter swap please also shifts its tone by swapping default glyphs in each subfamily no buried style sets in these fonts no hidden features that will go unfound and unused in many of my recent fonts i ve developed several alternates and style sets it s hard not to want to include everything editing yourself can seem unnecessary when this feature is available but i ve spoken with designers who tell me they never use or forget that these style sets are an option so with please i decided to minimize the hidden glyphs and instead develop version of the font that made those forms the default this allows for clear separate voices that make it easy to find the exact flavor of please you re craving are they really that different the spacing on the display tightens up a little with key glyphs being adjusted depending on weight in the lightest style the uppercase remain almost identical with the only adjustment being the q but in the lowercase we have quite a few variations as the font gets bolder the forms change even more and the rounded counters make themselves known in the black weight useful and exciting please is equal parts useful and exciting on one hand you get forms that feel absurdly original on the other a family so practical you ll want to try it on everything each subfamily covers latin extended with around 850 glyphs supporting 200
