ancient egypt by dawn pisturino 5 5 i have always found egyptian mythology fascinating but have never been able to get a hold on the ancient culture with its numerous deities all that has changed now i ve read this collection pharaoh to the gods sustainer of the land lay with drooping lids under nut s fertile belly throughout this book the focus is always on finding the light and restoring order out of chaos horus flies into ra s arms and the day is born blushing with this celestial embrace he scatters pink and orange jewels across the sky pisturino uses different kinds of poetry to really get inside the heads of ordinary ancient egyptians and pharaohs and queens and also the gods and goddesses themselves the poet presents the ancient culture in an understandable way without diluting the spiritual aspect of egyptian worship i found myself caught up in the praise of these deities i reached to the bottom of my soul and pulled out your name i offered it to hathor perfumed with incense and sweet wine this collection is uplifting and inspiring and opens the door to understanding the reverence the egyptians had for their gods you terrify me o jackal headed annubis you stink of the embalmers workshops dug deep in the earth at the end is a series of 12 poems detailing ra s journey in the underworld and all the trials he has to face there before he can rise once more with the sun each hour of his journey is explained beforehand by the poet and there s also a glossary of terms so that if you re unfamiliar with this aspect of ancient myth you can understand the subsequent poems this is my favourite collection of poems by pisturino so far listen to the music of the stars to that still quiet place where the gods dwell listen carefully beneath the hubbub of life the gods are calling to you dawn pisturino is an accomplished poet and author and currently blogs at dawn pisturino reviewed by freya pickard curator this is a scheduled post comments will appear when i m another incredible volume of poetry by cheadle about her homeland in south africa amongst the stark warnings about climate change and the extinction of many species cheadle works in beautiful imagery of light and shadow from the colour of a big cat s fur to the actual shadows cast by moon and sun to the symbolic shadows of global catastrophe that permeate the entire collection cheadle is an accomplished poet utilising many different forms of poetry including double ennea haiku tanka shadorma freestyle rhyming verse garland cinquain and many more i was thoroughly delighted to find a number of poems written to songs i love such as elephant scare sing omd s enola gay while you read it and sounds of african night sing disturbed s version of the sound of silence to this poem what i love about cheadle s poetry is that she doesn t shy away from the gritty realities of life and death on the veldt it s such a relief to read poetry that doesn t pander to the rather odd view that is so common in the world that nature is cruel cheadle shows very clearly that nature has an excellent way of balancing itself how prey and predator co exist in harmony the only cruel things on the planet appear to be humans who kill for pleasure and very often don t even eat or utilise what they ve terminated the purpose of burning butterflies is to share information about southern african animals and flora and it does just that if you love poetry about nature and climate crisis you will find this collection uplifting and inspiring robbie is a prolific writer and blogs at robbie s inspiration roberta writes and robbie cheadle she also has an incredible profile on youtube reviewed by freya pickard curator this is a scheduled post comments will appear when i m online in the first
