puteri hang li poh august 2008 puteri hang li poh sketches of memorable and nostalgic events past and present jotted down from my residence in jalan puteri hang li poh especially to be read by the present generation in my family lest they forget happy reading all sunday august 31 2008 merdeka happy 51st anniversary malaysia today malaysia celebrates its 51st independence day i recorded the following pictures this morning before and during the annual anniversary parade there were people everywhere waiting for the parade to begin some sat under the melaka tree one lucky one got a piggy back ride from dad for a better view though he didn t look to be too happy about it the raising of the national flag and the singing of the national anthem signified the start of the morning s program i was attracted to these young girls with their enthusiastic spirit to participate in the parade and also these young ones showing off on their bikes and mini trishaws led by their teacher oh you young ones keep the spirit of merdeka burning not free from colonisation because that s gone and past but free yourself from negative attitudes and strive to be a better person the pride of your family community and country i love you malaysia posted by hjh nazli abbas at 7 49 am no comments friday august 29 2008 don t forget amal said this at the dining table while having lunch when the japanese were here in malaysia she meant the japanese occupation of malaysia my teacher said families had to dig a big hole in their house so that when they hear the japanese soldiers coming they all hide inside the hole especially the girls otherwise the japanese soldiers would take the girls away then she asked me nek ngah when you were small did you have to do that immediately i replied oh no nek ngah was not even born then thank goodness i was born after they lost the war amal smiled happily come to think of it i don t remember much about the politics of the past take the question of independence in 1957 the year of independence i was 11 years of age and in std 6 i was so naive i didn t understand what all the excitement was all about then i remember being in a parade with the rest of my school mates the night before 31st august holding a beautiful green and blue lantern parading around the coronation park now extinct in banda hilir everybody was very happy as far as i can remember and then the year before that i remember a motorcade bringing the first prime minister of malaysia the late tunku abdul rahman driving past my father s shop at riverside now only do i know that the entourage was from the airport at batu berendam on its way to the banda hilir padang field where the tunku would announce the date of malaya s independence i remember very well amidst the hustle bustle and the crowd the tunku stopped before my father s shop to get a songkok malay head gear because apparently he forgot to bring one i remember my father wanting to give him the songkok as a present but the gracious tunku said he would pay for it and he did those were exciting moments in history posted by hjh nazli abbas at 5 46 pm no comments monday august 25 2008 the book village one day we took a wrong turn on the road and ended up at an unexpected building we drove on and on along a winding road amidst some lush greenery oblivious of where we were going to then at the end of the road we saw this building kampung buku melaka the melaka book village i knew one existed somewhere in melaka but not here in the botanical garden ayer keroh it is the only one in malaysia after the first one in langkawi closed last year it was officially opened on april 9th 2007 the children and i were excited when we entered the building because there were many books old and new for sale and also could be read in the cool air con rooms i think it is a good idea to have the book village in such an environment the area is popular for joggers and picnickers who could stop by and browse at the many books displayed unfortunately when we were there there were very few visitors maybe it is not widely advertised at the end of the visit we bought several books three old novels and a couple of new craft books must visit the book village again posted by hjh nazli abbas at 6 15 pm no comments saturday august 23 2008 for u my country beijing olympics have you been following the beijing olympics i m not a sports person myself but i sometimes watch my favourites gymnastics rhythmic gymnastics synchronised swimming and the like and when the winter olympics is shown on tv i would glue my eyes to the ice skating events ps i also like to watch ballroom dancing competitions on tv do you notice what these events have in common yes they are all very creative what excellent choreography not only that i never fail to marvel at the years of training sweat and tears to produce such perfect movements some of them defy gravity and sore into the air with twists and turns making it looks so darn easy and the costumes are beautiful and elegant too not that i condone to such dressings but this is sports all the training discpline determination to outdo oneself for whom for your country of course for yourself your family your hometown your state your country jones and nott from usa gymnast team from brazil so each time the national anthem of the gold winner was being played and the flag raised not only the winner was filled with emotion i who have nothing in connection with whoever and whatever would feel a lump in my throat and tears would swell my grand niece iman noticed it one day and commented why are you crying said i they re doing it for their country for u malaysia i would do anything i can feel my eyes swelling the russians doing a perfect 10 they received the gold medals congratulations to all those who participate in the olympics you are all winners the olympiads posted by hjh nazli abbas at 4 16 pm no comments friday august 22 2008 pop art see what has first day after registering as a member i went on the tread mill with a gung ho zeal to really loose some weight well after about ten minutes that was it i consoled myself saying that on the first day i shouldn t strain myself too much then i tried all the other machines just to get acquainted i remember many many years ago i bought the stationary exercise bicycle placed it before the tv set so that i ll be motivated to exercise but guess what not long after the bicycle metamorphosed into a towel rack maybe i ll do better this time god please help me does it help when the gym is on the first floor and the yummy cake house is at the ground floor temptation temptation scenes within the gym posted by hjh nazli abbas at 4 24 pm 1 comment monday august 18 2008 reunion of old buddies last saturday i went up to kayel kuala lumpur i e for a kopitiam reunion with my old buddies from days of yore when i first started teaching at the specialist teachers training institute in cheras way way back in the early seventies i worked at stti for some 20 odd years or so in fact stayed within the institute s compound most of my life there thus developing a special attachment to the environment and a comaraderie with my fellow teachers and workers so it was with great anticipation that i looked forward to the gathering arranged by my dear friend saadiah by the way for those uninitiated the word kopitiam is a chineses word a k a coffee shop which is the in thing now with the suburbians anyway i arrived half an hour before time at the rendevous after being driven round and round looking for one utama coffee house in p j since i was the earliest to arive i was instructed by saadiah to reserve seatings for 10 guests hmmm the waiting was an ordeal for me because seated in the kopitiam were unfamiliar faces and here was this grand lady from melaka sitting solitary at the tables with 10 chairs to make myself comfortable i ordered their famous white coffee blended mocca and pretended nonchalantly sipping the iced coffee and before long they arrived one after the other so you can just imagine the hoo haas shaking of hands the huggings the chatters among these over 60 s friends yesss long time no see the last time i saw most of them was about 15 years ago and pak ku i hadn t seen since his retirement in 1982 he was as chirpy as ever hugged all of us like his children whom he hadn t seen for years it was just like old times in the staff room during our coffee break liew still with his jokes yang siow meng his face still blushing red after a joke simon has put on some weight otherwise looking just as dashing nada loosing some hair but still the same nada i know and then there were dear saadiah kak sharifah zaharah dharma and agnes and also kok seng and encik hamzah we were very noisy no doubt in the kopitiam but nobody bothered here were old buddies sharing stories what happened in between about grown children and their families leaving the nests about the many grand children and even pak ku with his one great grand child we also talked about friends who had passed away remembering their kind deeds with sadness may god bless all my dear friends we separated with a promise to meet again in the near future thank you all for making my day see you all again for auld lang syne kok seng siow meng left earlier so not here posted by hjh nazli abbas at 5 47 pm 2 comments thursday august 7 2008 napkin decoupage hi there the puteri had been in hibernation for some time hopefully she s awake now well i d like to share a fascinating yet simple craft i recently came across all you need is some special decoupage medium golden liner for glass painting a pair of scissors and a brush then you will need to get some pretty paper napkins and a base to put the image on first get the image you like and cut it out then place the cutting on a smooth surface can be ceramic tile glass plastic or even wood use the brush dip it in water and dab it on the image the idea is to stick the very thin paper on the base after that apply the decoupage medium with the brush onto the image very carefully in case you tear the paper wait for it to dry and apply the second coating of medium let it dry for a while then using the gold liner outline your design to enhance it you can sign your masterpiece using the liner to make it personal voila below a few of my creations it s so easy you try it have fun posted by hjh nazli abbas at 2 16 pm 2 comments newer posts older posts home subscribe to posts atom islamic calendar worldtimeserver clock melaka about me hjh nazli
